The strapless costume Trish holds up is actually Jessica's original costume from the comics. In her original backstory she was a superhero named Jewel before Kilgraive got ahold of her.
and the backstory on Patsy Walker...
Yup it's a nice Easter egg from the comics.
@@CaptainFrost32 I really wish they had kept the Hellcat back story.

David Tennant did an amazing job in this show. He was a great choice for such a devious controlling villain.
I went from watching him on Doctor Who to this and it was fuckin whiplash lol. Dude's got range.
@@brewdaly1873 Incredible, true ? Krysten Ritter also having amazing acting skills (if you've seen how different her Chloe is in "Apartment 23", or her hilarious interviews with Conan O'Brien), I had somewhat higher expectations for this show.
I needed to watch compilations of the tenth doctor and crowley (good omens) in between episodes because it was killing me how an actor im used to liking is making me so uncomfortable
@@cosmicafflictions4970 Had the same feeling while I was watching his drama miniseries "Des". How could that be "my Doctor" ?
@@brewdaly1873 I just realized David Tennant, Matt Smith, Christopher Eccleston, and Peter Capaldi all played CBM supervillain roles (though Peter Capaldi played a DC supervillain instead of a Marvel one like the others).
You know, it's funny.... Now that time has passed since the series aired I had forgotten how *well* it was done. The creepiness that Tenant's Killgrave exudes, the barely contained self loathing mingled with trauma that Kristen Ritter brought to Jessica, all of it just so excellent. What an amazing series.
yeah first season jessica jones and dare devil are great (for different reasons) netflix started to drop the ball when they got concern about having their own connecting universe
@@a3-radio I don't think they dropped the ball too hard really. Jessica Jones and Daredevil season 3 are both excellent. I'd even say Daredevils third season is its best one.
I think the fact that Killgrave as so understandable as pure desire makes him so frightening. It might be super-powered, but it's also so very human
@@a3-radio It isn't so much that Netflix was dropping the ball. Netflix hands were tied. There was a power struggle within Marvel itself due to Disney. They were drumming out the old school Marvel story tellers and replacing them with their Disney Agenda Team. The same problem had been happening within the MCU. That is the reason for the inconsistencies and drop in quality. Since Daredevil was the furthest along in production, it was the least affected.
@@dunringill1747 What in the Great Conspiracy Theory Dumpster Fire are you on about? Is this "Disney evil, diversity bad" diatribe? I just ... I'm not drunk enough to deal with this.
Killgrave is such a simple villain on paper. He orders you to do something and you have to obey, but they REALLY ran with that and took it down a such a sinister path. Tennant did an amazing job with this role.
Should've been purple, though.
And Wolverine should be in yellow spandex, you can't have everything I the mcu
they went farther down in the comics. He's a complete monster. He'll tell you to stop breathing just for fun.
I read that as well, he ordered an entire resturant to stop breathing so he could eat his breakfast and read the paper in peace. He killed something like 34 people to just have a quiet breakfast. Insane
The best part is that he's not looking for world domination; he's just an regular slimeball.
He is by far one of the sickest villain I've seen in a marvel TV/movie. Taking away ppls choices, controlling them to do horrible things, ugh, such a good metaphor for abusive relationships and control
Natalie's biggest fear is a villain that can make her eat gluten. Priceless.
I thought she was going to say 'glue' 😆 That would've made more sense.
@@corax3341 I thought she DID say glue. Didn't she?
My cousins wife has Celiac' s, which I am guessing Nat has. When she eats gluten by mistake, she gets really sick for a few days. Feels like crap.
In my opinion, mind control is the most evil power there is which makes it SUPER weird that the Jedi can do it.
They can influence - but not outright control, and it doesn’t always work. In all instances of the movies for example all they have done was suggest for their enemies to do something and that’s about it.
The Jedi aren't good the sith are just worst think of evil twin and eviler twin
Well, that was the thing in A New Hope, they were more like empaths, Obi-Wan could affect "weak-minded" (like a Stormtrooper) to blindly accept his statements as facts and hallucinating sounds while Darth Vader could straight up make your mind try to kill you like an allergy response. Then The Empire Strikes Back made them telekinetic and near-telepathic.
I don't think bad people should have the right to free will, so if Kilgrave was a good guy it would be great IMO, just walk around prisons telling thousands of convicts to confess every single crime they have ever done, if his powers worked through tv/speakers, tell everyone in the planet to confess their crimes, it would be great
He could have stopped Thanos for God's sake
@@ryankomisarz1643 not only enemies, Quigon tried to control a merchant
Between David Tennant's Killgrave and Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin, not to mention a few of the others that you've to see, the Netflix Marvel series have some of the best villains in the MCU.
Cottonmouth, Bushmaster, Bullseye, Jigsaw. Even the pilgrim. Marvel Netflix really got it right with its villains
Even Iron Fist which is a bit of a train wreck, the villains are an order of magnitude better than the protagonist.
@@hs-ti4fr Cornell just wanted to play piano. 😥
@@hs-ti4fr This is where the Netflix series out classed the MCU. All of the villains you guys mentioned are badass, considered a threat, but yet you could empathize with them or in the cases of Bushmaster and Pilgrim there were times we were actually rooting for them. It brought an entertaining and suspenseful dynamic with the heroes in the shows that I feel is missing in most of the MCU movies. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, The Punisher, hell even Iron Fist had me on the edge of my seat, where as in the MCU you there's only a couple of movies that actually did that.
Really comes down to writing for the characters as well as the actors themselves.
Don't sleep on Cottonmouth.
We always talk about Daredevil and how amazing it is when we talk about the Marvel Netflix shows.
But the first season of Jessica Jones is just as amazing as the very best of Daredevil, and it's kinda sad to see it gets left behind.
I would argue that the Jessica Jones series is better as a whole than the Daredevil series is as a whole.
@@sparks3705 Heavy disagree, to me at least, the show kinda...well, becomes noticeably worse after season 1
I love how petty Kilgrave is. With his powers he could do so much but he’s happy being small-time and stealing people’s cars.
And that's also the tragedy of his power. It's the modern day, Midas Touch.
@@chrisbergsten1429 it's what makes him so unnerving as a villain. He already has what so many other villains want. Power over people's will.
That costume Trish was showing Jessica is Jessica’s old costume she once wore.
It's her costume from comics, but I doubt she ever wore it in this show.
@@dmitriimekh6288 And I think the mask Trish wears is supposed to be based on her comic book counterpart, Hellcat, but it could also be a reference to the second costume Jessica wore for like, eleven minutes. IDK, it's been a WHILE😅
@@notavailable8514 About the mask, I thought that too. In the comics she tried the superhero thing again, changing from the happy maskless Jewel to a more dark identity as masked Knightress. It has to be a reference to both comic costumes in the same scene, right? Very brief and efficient.
That was her comic costume Nat. In the comics, she was a classmate of Peter Parker but was that invisible girl with barely a social life (If I remember correctly she had a crush on him)
(Before she got her powers)
I read Alias god knows how many times (the comic on which most of the series is based) and honestly her comic counterpart is a lot more heart breaking of a down fall
Including a beat down by the Avengers that put her in the hospital. Brutal.
@@TimStCroix also the fact that all of them just forgot about her (despite knowing Carel and Peter)
@@JamailvanWestering She disappeared for months and no one noticed. 💔😭
@@thatHARVguy yup that’s the main reason she stopped being a superhero despite that the Avengers tried to reaffirm her that she was a good one
Something I always like to think of when watching this show is the guy who gave Kilgrave his jacket. Yeah it’s nothing issue and played by a joke, but there is an underlying trauma even in something so trivial as that.
Can you imagine how you would feel if someone controlled you and made you want to do something you never would do otherwise. For that brief moment he wasn’t in control and how could you ever trust your actions again. It’s super frightening.
13:30 David Tentant is such an amazing actor man! It stills surprises me he went from being the Doctor in Doctor Who, who is a honorable man, to a sociopath scam like Kilgrave! 🙏🏽
Crowley in Good Omens is really good tho! and Broadchruch as well
don't forget Harry Potter as well how he was the imposter to Mad Eye
Kilgrave is basically Tenant's Doctor if Tenant's Doctor went dark.
The close up on [Malcom breathing heavily] killed me 😂😂😂
i'm sure Miles didn't mind
I always saw it as spousal abuse trauma, not addiction. I know women that have been sexually abused that can't watch the show because of how real Jessica's trauma was portrayed.
I think she is mostly referring to the alcoholism addiction when she says that, not so much the ptsd part.
@@TheLovelyflight She's said since before she started watching that she heard the series was about addiction, and has brought it up before in reference to Jessica.
She clearly seeing Killgrave as an addiction metaphor
It's both. Seriously, Kilgrave is such a layered villain it's ridiculous.
Kilgraves powers are also and allegory for rape.
In many ways it represent human trafficking. Young women who fall under control of traffickers. Then forced into the life.
What Kilgrave did to Miles... sorry, Malcolm... is so awful. That guy had his entire life destroyed, probably had his loved ones turn away from him in disgust, just because Kilgrave wanted to use him.
He's by far the most unnerving villain in comic books.
Jessica Jones is genuinely one of the best series ever!
The first season is. Seasons 2 and 3 are an easy skip.
Agreed!
Agreed. Season 1 brilliant. Season 2 still good but weakest of the 3, season 3 a return to form.
@@DrLipkin Season 3 is great. Not as good as Season 1 (because almost nothing is), but VERY good all the same.
@@ieyke I didn't care for it.
So you know, Nat, you don't have to cock the hammer on a pistol to fire it. Films use that as a visual shorthand, but pulling the trigger automatically pulls back the hammer.
Trish's finger was on the trigger, she was ready to fire.
Came here to say this, it was more than likely a double action revolver meaning that you you can fire with the hammer down, just means that you have to pull the trigger a little harder
Only double-action pistols. There are still plenty of single-action pistols on the market that do need to have the hammer cocked in order to fire. 1911 Colt and the Desert Eagle are a couple, along with a LOT of revolvers. That being said, the revolver that was given to Trish in that scene was a Smith & Wesson Model 637 Airweight which is a double-action AND single-action. Meaning it can be fired with the hammer cocked for a lighter trigger pull, or without it cocked for a heavier trigger pull.
@@gothnate The point is, almost every modern fire arm someone is likely to see in the wild today is some form of double action or stiker fired, that when loaded is ready to fire. So inexperience laymen/women should be taught to assume it's in a firing condition, rather than look at it and go "hammers down, it can't fire until it's cocked". Because that's only true of an incredible small amount of handguns on the market, and these people can't recognize and differentiate a Ruger Blackhawk, 1911, Browning Hi-Power etc... from a Python, Berretta 92, P226, etc...
I was going to say something, but they have already beaten that horse to death.
@@spinynorman887 Naw, when it comes to firearms discussions (and especially arguments) that beast always has at least one breath left.
I think it's meaningful that Kilgrave could have just told the vendor to give him anything for free, but instead made him scald himself. Because he's had these powers for so long, he often just gives the first command that pops into his head. Someone who had had to worry about consequences/not always just got his way might still steal, but would be more likely not to just toss off any command without thinking.
So Nat, as a big fan of theater I know you'll appreciate that the woman who Killgrave forced to play the cello was actually Little Red Riding Hood from the original broadway production of Into the Woods! I love when theater actors pop up in the wild haha
5:46 - ""C'mon Mom, you were nowhere to be seen."
Kilgrave must have had enough time with the little girl to give her detailed instructions. Which almost certainly means the Mom was around the whole time and was instructed by Kilgrave to not interfere with the kid delivering the message. Heck, she was probably told to get the kid away from Jessica as soon as the message was delivered.
I think its more simple, Kilgrave just told her to leave
David Tennant is awesome as this villain. Killgrave is a villain that has been in the X-men animated series and the Avengers Earth’s Mightiest Heroes animated series. He is also called Purple Man. In the comics he has Purple skin. I think David wearing Purple works better for a live action version of the character. There is a Doctor Who villain called The Master. So it is awesome to see David play a character that is like The Master.
I love Jessica. Kristen Ritter did such a perfect job portraying her.
It's so messed up that Kilgrave has now taken her home, the words she uses to calm herself down is her home street and now Kilgrave owns it, reestablishing control over her coping mechanisms, now she has no way to calm herself or deal with the trauma affecting her as Kilgrave has essentially taken that away from her.
I’m glad you’re enjoying this show so much Nat. It’s really good.
In the episode “99 Friends” that “girl” (as you kept referring to her) was Susan from the show FRIENDS. Also, “the incident” they were referring to in that episode (as well as in Daredevil) was Loki’s attack on New York from the first Avengers movie.
Killgrave really is the best villain for these themes the show is exploring. Season 1 of Jessica Jones is so good.
If they are going ahead with Daredevil reborn, please can we have more Jessica Jones - I love that her having powers is almost secondary to the themes of abuse, addiction, trauma etc.
Also the costume is comic book accurate from when she went under the Alias Jewel
@@chrisbergsten1429 Right? They sorta made a point about like girls being victims of human trafficing or some shite but idk if they're just incompetent or afraid to commit to making Drakov actually smart and scary, kinda like Kilgrave. Man's disgusting and bonechilling at times
I am absolutely LOVING Your Reactions to Jessica Jones, Natalie! I thought this Season was the BEST of any Netflix/Marvel show! David Tennant's Killgrave is right up there with Vincent D'Nofrio's Wilson Fisk as far as Villains go! I Can't wait for Part 3!!! Keep up the GREAT Reactions!
I’m usually super slow when watching shows but this season, I binge watched it a day. There’s something to addicting about it; the villain is a complex character and the main character is the most human and realistic hero we have in media I think. And the themes of addition and recovering from abusive relationships… fantastic writing and acting
This serie is sooooo good, David is an amazing actor and Kristen omg, what a good choices
The costume you laughed so hard at was the original outfit of a certain character from the comics :D
It's like watching Civil War, you're just waiting for Tony Stark to find out/realize who killed his parents. In this case you're waiting for Luke to find out that Jessica killed his wife. Same setup, but currently very different energy.
Not quite the same setup. Civil war would have been a very different movie if Winter Soldier was sleeping with Iron Man :P
@@Miezwa 😂 Why do you think I said it had very different energy? 🤣
😂 ya'll missed a censor at 8:21 and it honestly shocked me. Been a long time since I heard Nat uncensored.
26:15 This scene is great. It shows it's hard for Killgrave to NOT control people. The struggle to word things so the guy stays happy and does not feel violated later or demand his house back. After all, Killgrave wants to stay off law enforcement radar. So no fuss around his new permanent address. If he causes enough trouble to be noticed, S.H.I.E.L.D. will be on his ass.
That's the thing about Kilgrave. You almost can't blame him for being what he is. Since childhood, it's been literally impossible for anyone to say no to him. He never learned the lessons the rest of us have about how selfish behaviour and hurting others doesn't work out well in the end. He's a psychopath because he never had to learn empathy. It's hard to even treat him like he's accountable for his actions, because he actually lacks the maturity to be accountable.
Killgrave was so jarring because David Tennant is an absolute puppy of a human being, so watching him play such an evil villain was a trip. Such a great actor.
About the "She's just being dramatic." it's a complex situation as Jessica is trying to ease Simpson's trauma while Trish essentially brought it down on herself against Jessica's repeated warnings but on the other hand that doesn't make Trish's emotions from being assaulted any less real than Simpson's so...
Kilgrave's power acts like a post hypnotic suggestion. Once he's planted a series of commands in someone's mind they continue to
carry them out regardless of whether he's conscious or even present. That's why the bodyguards were able to rescue him.
No, The bodyguards where PAID, He specifically didn't controll them in the case he was incapacitated
Its made perfectly clear in the show
15:05 this is a great easter egg in the show. That is Jessica Jones' superhero costume in the comics :P
And her superheroin name was Jewel .
Most revolvers these days are double action, meaning you don't need to cock the hammer to fire them.
And a cop who knows the difference wouldn't have given a single action revolver to someone with no firearm experience. I'd say it's pretty safe to assume it's double action.
@@andrewe2057 It's a Smith & Wesson Model 637 Airweight. It can be fired in both single and double-action.
Thanks for posting this, I was about to.
I always roll my eyes at Killgrave buying the house "honestly" because yeah, I get why he'd conveniently see it that way but it's not like he got the 1.2 million dollars he used to buy it by working a 9-5 or by some other honest means. So he DID buy the house using his powers, just with an extra step added in. And yes, I had the same reaction to the reveal of Hope's pregnancy- it's like 8 different levels of "oh shit, noooooo"
I love the way killgrave tells people what they want or what to do, he doesn’t say it in an evil way or a malicious way like you’d expect from a manipulative villain, he talks like a normal and friendly guy (just like irl manipulators), you wouldn’t know he was evil by the tone of his voice, just by his actions
I think it's a generally accepted rule that your hero is only as good as your villain, and Daredevil and Jessica Jones understood that
It's wonderful seeing Nat watch this show...I often wondered did anyone else feel the same way....
The "Incident" was the first Avenger's movie
Miles is a cool dude.
The outfit Trish brought out is Jessica’s outfit in the comics
Kilgrave really might be the best villain in the MCU.
Love this show! So glad you decided to watch it.
The best part of this season is how in the next ep I think they make you feel bad for Kilgrave just a little bit. I was shocked they were able to do that tbh.
Rewatching this first season with you reminds me how freakin good it is!!! Loved it so much!!!! Can't wait to see the rest of the season!!!! 😁
I am so glad you discovered this show She is amazing
Super hyped for this video

A nat upload always makes my day!
FINALLY!!! IVE BEEN CHECKING YOUR CHANNEL EVERY DAY TO SEE IF YOU UPLOADED PART 2 FINALLY!! FINALLYYYYYYYY
I seriously love that you’re watching this series. It’s so underrated. It’s sooo goood!
When Trish was trying to get Jessica to wear that gawd-awful superhero costume, that is because in the comics Jones used to be a hero named Jewel, part of a team of heroes called Pulse, and she wore that costume. In the Pulse comics, she was part of that superhero team, until one time, she bursts into a room where Killgrave is. He tells her to stop, so she stops, and then he says, "take your clothes off." The last we see of her is her taking her superhero costume off. And that is the last time we saw her in Marvel Comics for a long time, until the Jessica Jones comic book came out, and she is a drunken, depressive wreck, post-Killgrave. And it was the first R-rated Marvel comic with strong adult language and gratuitous sex scenes. So, yeah, pretty dark stuff.
Mom was exactly where Killgrave told her to be. 😳
I knew you’d love this show. Great reaction as always ❤
The outfit the Trish was trying to get Jessica to wear is the costume that she wore in the comics as Jewel and Power Woman.
Glad you are back you are so much fun! And you watch good stuff. Congrats on your wedding!🎉
6:35 Most revolvers (including that one) are double action meaning that you don't have to have "the thing pulled back" (the hammer cocked) in order for it to fire when you pull the trigger. It just makes it easier to fire/less trigger pull when the hammers is cocked
Your editing has gotten more timely and enjoyable, i'm happy to see your channel growing as well!
15:09-The outfit Trish was showing was Jessica's costume in the comics.
I love this show glad you’re enjoying it
Dammit, now I feel I need to binge this show again! 🤪
Yay Nat. So glad you're doing JJ. This is serious psychological drama that comes right from the comic books.
absolutely loooooooove these vids so much natalie keep up the great work!
Been waiting on this! Also, Congratulations on the wedding!! That was her comic outfit btw.
Nat, the part of the gun you are referring to is called the hammer, and for the record it doesn't really need to be pulled back to fire the weapon. It can be cocked, but it isn't essential like with "old west" six shooters. Most modern weapons the hammer will draw back and release when the trigger is pulled. Cocking the hammer (or pulling back the slide on an automatic) is largely a Hollywood trope that is done for visual drama but technically entirely unnecessary.
That costume was actually from the comics. Before Jessica Jones became a P.I. she was an Avenger named Jewel.
5:18 Yeah, Kilgrave is a sociopath. He's basically more sick and twisted than Joker. However, Daredevil & Doctor Doom is immune to his mind control
No idea how people disliked this show. Holy crap is this villain so sooo good and Jessica is such a relatable mess of a character let alone her badass abilities. She was easily over shadowed in a small series called the defenders but I swear they barely wrote a script for her.
Defenders bent over backward to give everybody their moment in the sun.
It's pretty rough around the edges with the subject's matters and kind of slow pacing, it's not gonna catch everyone's attention at first glance
But of course it's great
I forgot how good this series was!!
Fun fact: In the Marvel comic books, both Daredevil and Jessica Jones have met Kilgrave
Fun fact #2: The actor who played Malcolm "Miles" was also Scott the red ranger in Power Rangers RPM.
I just watched part one yesterday so this is great! Let’s. Go.
I like how you switched places
That white costume was Jessica's super hero costune in the comics when she was a hero named Alias
Oh snap!!! You have a previously on segment now! Brings me back to the X-men animated series from the 90s lol; last time on Natalie Gold’s channel lol

This is one of the most enjoyable reaction videos I've ever watched on your channel. JJ's S1 is just getting started so strap in your seatbelts because bumpy roads are ahead.
I have been waiting for this😊
17:20 He can program you, so he can sleep knowing you will still do whatever he programmed you to do, including protecting him.
No, if I remember correctly those guys were paid bodyguards. Because his power only works in a certain area and for a certain time.
@@scrrin You remember correctly. It was a paid gig. I wasn't sure (and actually doubted you) but I checked the interrogation scene. Those guys were paid.
However, while his control _can_ wear off, short of completing the assigned task (if at all possible), it takes extraordinary circumstances or great length of time to do so. I'm being careful of spoilers, here, even though I suspect Nat has finished the season.
Anyway, all that is required is the correct command and an occasional refresh. He could easily have recruited the security team and refreshed their command when needed. And they could lead normal lives when off-duty.
There are various examples in the series where it's safe to assume Kilgrave isn't nearby his minions as they do his bidding.
For instance, he's out living his life while Malcolm spies on Jess, he's not shown to be anywhere near Hope after she's rescued, and Simpson has travel at least a couple of blocks to get to his meeting with Kilgrave.
Proximity is only required to gain "access" to give the initial command(s).
the coment was pretty great about two superhumans aknowledging the helmet laws while scoffing them. made me think back to yesterday when i asked "who remembers smokey the bear?" and realized the ebay banner ads were targeted to my narrow domographic of "purchasers of lighters online"
6:40 "THis thing" pools back when u push the trigger too. It's only make the trigger havier
the costume is a shout out to the one she wore in the comics as the hero name Jewel
Nat I'm glad you continue with this great series and it's my favorite out of all the Netflix series and I am hoping that Jessica shows up on She-Hulk because if notice with suggested viewing after her series it's She-Hulk and the same for Dare Devil but none of the other series maybe that is a clue that she will be on She-Hulk or just a flaw.
I see Jessica and Jennifer have a lot in common besides their names start with J and they both can lift a car which are nice but they like a nice beverage.
15:15 fun fact, that is Jessica Jones’s original costume from the comics. She’s only wore it once
If I had Killgrave's power of influence, I use to make all of Los Angeles do the world's largest MICHAEL JACKSON's THRILLER/Flash Mob dance.
A silencer doesnt actually make a gun anywhere near silent. It just takes it from permeant hearing loss without ear protection to just below permeant hearing loss. 9mm still is over 130 decibels with a silencer.
"Is she gonna flash all of new york!?" That's uhh.. her comic costume and uh... Holy crap, there's a bit of a story with you mentioning her Flashing.
15:03 Inside joke here, that's the costume Jessica briefly wore in the comics.
I love this show so much and just so you know the costume that Trish showed Jessica is what Jessica Jones wears in the comics also the name Trish suggests and Jessica says it sounds like a stripper was the name Jessica used in the comic for a bit. Trish is also a super hero in the comics called Hellcat by the way. I love David for this part he plays Kilgrave so very well and seeing Carrie Ann Moss in the show was also cool as well.
