- This video serves two purposes: two introduce viewers to seventeen obscure, rare and weird succulent species that grow in the winter, and to provide an update on my seed sowing attempts with these same species.
A variety of succulents, caudex plants and bulbs are featured in the video, specifically: Muiria hortenseae, Conophytum pageae, Monsonia (Sarcocaulon) peniculina, M. multifida, M. patersonii, Pelargonium ceratophyllum, Monsina angustifolia, Bulbine bruynsii, Bulbine torta, Kumara (Aloe) haemanthifolia, Crassothonna (Othonna) clavifolia, Crassothonna sparsifolia, Eriospermum alcicorne, Eriospermum erinum, Albuca bruce-bayeri, Massonia species and Gethyllis villosa.

My grandmother was from a desert in Mexico and she was a healer. She would make massage oils using native plants. A particular type of scented Geranium oil is used to relieve grief. I've always been fascinated with the plant world.
That’s really interesting. Lots of people ignore the traditional healing properties of plants - they get written off as superstition - but often these properties have been well supported by scientific investigation too!
I’m from South Africa and really enjoy your videos, but please do a video on the poaching of our rare succulents to make people aware that they should purchase responsibly. Some of our succulents are now critically endangered due to illegal poaching.
It’s a great idea and a topic I’d really love to discuss. Will need quite a bit of prep work to do it justice, but I’ll get there. Thanks for your feedback.
Sweet video, I like the weird stuff and the honesty 😂
Thanks! Weird stuff is the best. As for the honesty… no point trying to pull the wool over anyone’s eyes. If it doesn’t work it doesn’t work!
Another fantastic video. I always learn so much from you, often discovering plants I'd never even heard of.
Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom....I'm gonna need a bigger greenhouse 😂
Haha the number of seedlings I’m always raising… I’m always feeling like I need more space too. I’m glad you’re being introduced to new plants - thanks for watching!
Keep it up boss man and thanks for the advice
Thanks again for tuning in!
The BEST plant video on yt, probably 👏 absoultely love the plants you have chosen. And you really know a lot, I always learn something new from your videos, even though I know cacti and succulents pretty well. Keep up the good work! 🙂
Thanks for the kind words - glad you’re learning about some rad new plants.
Love my oddballs, mostly caudiciforms like Jatropha podagrica, Ficus petiolaris and a hybrid of Cyphostemma hardyi called Hardy Har Har with reddish maroon leaves that look like a Kalanchoe and many small caudexes above the soil. Glad to find your channel as weird plants are my jam.
Some great plants you’ve got there! I love Cyphostemma in particular, got quite a few of them coming along from seed. Thanks for watching!
Hello! I am also delighted with Muiria, it is a very rare and difficult plant. Masonia has just woken up and started to produce leaves, I do not expect flowering, while the bulb is small.
Wonderful! Such great plants to grow. Thanks for watching 🤘
I've loved all kinds of geraniums all my life--Never! have I seen these with the thick trunks and desert style. wow. Thanks for sharing.
These are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to succulent desert geraniums… I’ll have to make a video about the whole family of them sometime. Thanks for watching!
@AridZine I'd love to see this too! Keep up the great content
Before the end of winter growing season I’ll get a Pelly video out I reckon.
@AridZine hoping you get some nice flowers for it
Glad I found your channel. I was & am into the stapeliads & apocynaceae but I love most of the arid succulents too. Epiphytic cacti are interesting & have fantastic flowers. Wondering if you've thought of smoke to get Kumara haemanthifolia to germinate? Probably telling you how to suck eggs. I have found clove oil will deter rats & other rodents a bit. Chilli spray too if the plants can handle it.
Thanks! Hadn’t thought about smoking the seeds… might be worth a try. And clove oil is a good tip too - wonder how long it works for? Food for thought.
Interestingly enough I just went back and checked the Kumara pot again and noticed a tiny seedling had popped! Not sure if it came up in the last day or so, or if I just overlooked it while making the video.
nice video, the sound is also loud enough now!
Thanks! I figured out how to turn the volume up 😅
Loving yr channel, eagerly subbed.
What's your general locale in Australia?
I’m in Sydney - good spot for anything from South Africa.
🤘
Could you showcase the plants more and comment in the background? The close-ups and the mature pictures are featured too briefly.
I can try! Thanks for your feedback.
Really appreciate your videos!
Sorry to hear the rat appeared again. Have you tried peppermint scent or white vinegar? I heard rats are repelled by those smells
Thanks for your suggestions - I’ve not tried those. At the moment the rat seems to have turned its attention to my lemon tree but when it returns to the greenhouse I’ll give them a spin.
I’d say I have Hortlust for each of the plants you showed, but not lust but Gobsmacked a better word seeing these bizarre plants. I could not confidently grow any of these right now…but geez there’s a lot of looking up to do because I’ve never seen or heard of any of these plants. What a cool video, I have to watch again to write down the names, I just wish you had shown longer shots of the seedlings and the mature plants. No problem -thank you, off to investigate! 🌱👽
Sorry that was not a reply, the comment went in the wrong place! 🤣
Super Super ❤❤❤hi
🤘🤘
...to stop old blokes rolling out of bed.
🤨
Congratulations on so many successes! Pity about the mislabeled seeds, though they look like a pleasant sort of plant; did the original seed supplier give you any remedy?
...Now I want to grow a Bulbine torta. Watching your channel is going to get me in so much trouble with my family.
Thank you! I never sought a remedy - I bought them from the International Geraniaceae Group, which is a volunteer group who distribute thousands of seeds every year so mistakes will happen! All good, I discovered an interesting new plant anyway. 😅
As for B. torta… they’re excellent! And they seed prolifically… I harvested over 600 seeds from just a few plants last year.
