Mark & Brett what an absolutely brilliant video, great topic, great info, great explanation, great relevance, great tips and no BS. All adv riders (and everyone else really) needs to watch this. Thank you for taking the time to put this video together for all of us to benefit.
Massive thanks mate!! Glad we got the message across!
Great video Brett. Good to hear your responders inside perspective. I personally have the Inreach Mini
Never needed to use it in SOS thankfully. Big advantage I see is if you have a group with them you can see each other's position when you get separated. Texts are all done via the Garmin Earthmate app.. also being able to share your map to friend ls and family so they can see where you are at their convenience.. Have even used mine to order dinner at the Birdsville Hotel when we were running late after a trip to Poppel Corner and back in a day..
That's brilliant!! I'm still keen to check out what Garmin has to offer. It's so good having the capability to reach out for help anywhere in the country!
I do like that group tracking that Garmin offers. Really keen to give that a go on the Garmin XT2.
Finally got the chance to watch this.
It was excellent info that removes some of the mystery.
Wendy loves the fact I can now periodically send “I’m ok all good” texts that include my location, when I’m out riding on my own.
Its a massive advantage and I have to admit, after our run yesterday, I'm keen to seriously consider one!
@@ADVBrett- yep the Garmin InReach cheapest monthly of $25 and ability to suspend any time, and unlimited sends of “predefined” texts seems good to me.
@@AfricaTwin-Stuff It's one that's certainly on my list!! Keen to see how it integrates with the Zumo XT2!
Great video, thanks for explaining.
I carry a PLB on me.
Hadn't heard of what 3 words. Now have the app
That website and app is brilliant for sure!!
Thanks guys for your information on these emergency devices because no one has touched base about them cheers
Thanks Andrew! I'm hoping we can touch base on each device and their updates as they come out!
Great video.
Great video guys. Well done. I'm sure this will benefit a lot of riders. We will need to decide the next topic at the B B and B night in a couple of weeks lol.
Thanks fella! Hopefully we can expand this into different products and technology in the future as well!!
Keen on the next topic!! 😁
Will look into pricing for a group buy for PLBs and Satellite Communicators for those that don't have them. Probably after Easter.
I reckon you'll get more than a bit of interest from the crew too!
That’s a Richy Vida T-shirt? Be good, be careful, be kind
Sure is!! Love watching his videos! Richy gave me some awesome advice on the Africa Twin before I bought one!
What three words, get it, it saves mistakes on long lines of numbers for location.
This was explained to me at a Westpac helicopter presentation by a pilot after talking to him about my type of riding several years ago. Great topic its all good till it goes bad think about what you would do.
So true indeed TJ, it's a brilliant app and well versed with the emergency services around the world now too!
Awesome info mate , somthing ive definitely got to look into
Do it for sure fella, it's so good having it there just in case the worst happens!
Good topic and discussion 👍
Thanks Hein! Glad it came across well!!
He inreach mini uses the garmin messenger app to communicate. The device itself can also type messages as a back up.
I have mine on a $20 a month plan.
That's not a bad price at all really! Certainly well worth it!!
Good chat. Satphone and PLB for me...all bases covered. Weird thing is Satphones are old technology now.
So true and those messengers are slowly replacing them. Imagine what the tech will be like in 5 years time with things like Starlink and iPhones getting satellite communications!
I think Optus are releasing some kind of satphone/mobile combo soonish..I think🤔
That'll be very interesting given the recent issues they've had!
Great vid guys. Very informative.
Does zoleo and Garmin use the same satellites?
If not which device has the better availability of satellites?
Hey Logan! They both use the low earth orbit Iridium network, they also must have a clear line of sight to those satellites to send and receive the signals. With what devices are better, it really comes down to how you want to use the device. I like the PLB as it's got a better chance of getting that signal out to our own Rescue Co-ord Centre in Canberra but I also like how the messenger devices can also touch base with family. It's really a personal preference.
If anyone is in the market for a PLB check out the Kti SA2G can be had for as low as $250. AU) very compact unit, had mine for 8 years though luckily never had to use it.
That's a top unit with some good reviews behind it! Thanks!
A massive delay? This the electronic age - it takes no time at to communicate between the emergency coordination centre and they will have established protocols with local SAR defining which information is transmitted. So called expert is talking rubbish.
Actually it does. There can be a delay using the messenger devices, nothing happens quickly, even with a PLB it can be a number of hours between the activation, response and rescue.
After a 15 second countdown Inreach transmits the SOS signal to the IERCC. The average response time from the receipt of an SOS message until referring an emergency responder is only 11 minutes, wherever you are in the world. Hardly a massive delay. The response time of local SAR will be the same.
