      @@jonpret What about her training, where is the real voice, she obviously has chest notes, she should use them, this training telling young singers to sing in the mask is excuse my language Bollocks, all the really and I mean really great singers never used the mask, Jean de Reszke Adelina Patti, Melba Caruso Gayarre Mario Rubini Duprez it goes on and on, this type of training is ruining Opera, the use of microphones is allowing singers to become lazy and faking the singing, one only has to see the incredible agony that Ian Bostridge does with music, I wish they would all put their tongue in the back of the throat and LOWER their larynx and produce proper Chest Notes, then you can hear what they really sound like, singing in a big theatre you have to have a voice that can project to the distant corners, you cannot do that in the mask, a very famous Tenor Alfredo Kraus sang a lot in the mask, but, he knew how to lower his Larynx, drop his jaw and produce quality high notes, he did not have a big voice, but it was a beautiful voice. I heard Giovanni Martinelli in Aida Turandot Otello Tosca at Covent Garden in 1937, you knew you had had your monies worth after his performances, he could be heard well above the Orchestra and his voice would ring in the Gods, he did the same at the Met, with perfect diction a broad smile a happy face a incredibly fine actor and a great artist and singer, trained in the real Bel Canto method By a famous tenor of earlier times Mandolini, a very fine teacher, Rosati , Mellochi, all taught the same methods of producing voices who could sing, not like that poor girl Netrebko who is actually a lesson on how NOT to sing, Intelligence is needed, Vogt Singing Wagner, this is pitiful, it is like Tito Schipa singing Siegfried, Schipa was a great artist Vogt is a fake artist, Melchior would break wind better than Vogt could sing, Bartoli, granted the lady is talented but is not a great singer, I heard Dame Clara Butt singing at the Albert Hall in London at a grand age, who was doing coloratura with an immense voice and range, filling the vast hall with her magnificent tones, she WAS a great Artist, Kathleen Ferrier the same an incredibly beautiful flexible voice only to die to young, they sang with chest and it was heard. I could go on all night, but you have to understand that Opera or Oratorio or even a Bach Cantata must be sung with full voice and beauty of tone that is done with the Chest and the Lower Larynx and not in the mask.

      @@robertevans8010 Interesting comment, but you are focused on the wrong thing to begin with. What is the mask? What is support? What is chest voice or head voice? People, including voice teachers, cannot even define those terms and they are trying to teach it to others! The most important thing in singing opera, jazz, pop or whatever (voice is still an instrument no matter the style you sing) is to use your voice properly according to your INDIVIDUAL instrument!! How do you use your breath energy in the correct way to reduce pressure on the vocal chords level and let them vibrate more freely, what mechanism allows you to switch freely from one vocal quality to another and use them whenever you want, do you know about your own vocal formats and how to properly shape them to use them to get the right resonance for you and so on so you can actually use YOUR instrument and not try to make it sound a certain way to fit social trends. Forget the microphone, the ridiculous imageries... singers and critics actually need to learn how vocal production physically works to eventually be able to discuss the technique quality of one singer or another.

That said the voice is of good quality and she can do a lot of great technical things. I just suspect live in a larger venue her voice would have little impact. Her voice is surpassed by many.

      @TheKelhia Před 9 lety +3

      William maddox I have sung other arias by this composer, and he tends to write in a lot of softer dynamics contributing to the softness of her voice. In my opinion, he was trying to go for the softer, more feminine side rather than the burly opera voice. I don't think Cecilia has a soft voice, she actually has a very traditional opera projection if you listen to her other works like "Se tu m'ami se sospiri", she is just honestly incredible.

    • @luceafarul579
      @luceafarul579 Před 4 lety +2

      @@williammaddox3339 Opera voices are getting "smaller" in volume because it used to be that singers can take many breaths in between a phrase to enlarge the voice. Nowadays the focus is more on smoothless and length (i.e. longer breath sustain) of vocals, which means singers won't be able to use all that breath to squeeze out like three words in a legato. There are still some pure dramatic roles such as Turandot where the music is clearly written for a big voice, as the phrases are shorter. But with these pieces, longer breaths, smooth legatos, and high agility are superior technique. Cecilia Bartoli made herself to be a very dynamic singer. From this perspective she may be one of the best that ever lived.

      A dangerous aria for anyone; she takes many risks, takes pleasure in them and gives great pleasure to the audience. Who cares whether she fits better in one classification or another? She's not the first singer to cross many boundaries and thrive because of or in spite of it. Of course if everyone listens too much to all the carping she might be the last--and that would be a great shame. There are enough correct and bloodless performances in the world already.

    Truly angelic. La divina Bartoli.Yet another flawless performance from her. Not only is this technically perfect but Bartoli conveys such a wide range of emotions. This performance is yet another reason to love Bartoli. Her stage presence for me at least from the videos I have watched, is only matched by that of Maria Callas. Bartoli's Agitata Da Due Venti is mind blowing not to mention her O Sole Mio, which is in my opinion, better than Pavarotti's version.

    I do not know what is being said in Italian here and I wish I could on many levels. The words look innocent enough with "bella" and "della" as sweet rhymes many lovers would exchange if giberish was universal. This woman is the most expressive person I have come acoss outside of Charlie Chaplin and Fred Astaire. Such a delight to be able to hear her.
