What a well needed sound from a time when minimum requirements were to actually be able to play your musical instrumment and sing for real !! Good to be reminded ☺
This was one of two songs that became huge worldwide hits during 1967 which gave that summer the nickname "The Summer Of Love" (the other being The Beatles' "All You Need Is Love"). But that summer also saw the war in Vietnam continue, war break out in the Middle East (won by Israel in just six days), a civil war breaking out in the Nigerian province of Biafra (most of it's casualties were civilians who starved to death), and deadly riots in Detroit and Newark. Maybe the younger generation of that era was trying to say (or sing) a message to those in power.
Just saw the Airplane two months ago at private concert in West Palm Beach, OH my GOD! Incredibly powerful and beautiful, what memories it brought back of my 60's. Paul was playing with everything he had, it was a joy to watch his love for the music and his Rickenbacker's... Thanks again for all you brought to Rock and Roll Paul, RIP my friend.
I absolutely love JA's "Surrealistic Pillow", but I honestly can't help listening to the album without feeling such a deep nostalgia and without thinking about the summer of 1967 filled with so much young people eager to live life. I'm only 24 and I really despise the deadness in today's youth.
