You should never buy cards that you can't really afford. NEVER. Just like gambling, stay away from financial disaster. Buy what you like to collect, with what you can afford as the number 1 rule. Collecting is fun if you have financial control. Investing and thinking you will get rich is most likely not going to happen.
About 90% of cards are worthless, of course well known players, some autos and legends along with some numbered shorter printed stuff have some sort of value. I own plenty of no valued cards and I’m fine with it. I’m a fan of basketball and it only made me love the sport even more.
Your points definitely work for busts and prizm silver and base and stuff. But Hall of famers rookie cards will always have value. The problem is 99.9% of these "investors" can't pick the hall of famers and lose it all
I am an appraiser as well. What utility do you find in a one carat emerald? What utility in a nineteen eighties original landscape painting by Mcknight? And you did not even address the non utilitarian cosmetic features in real estate that have contributory value. Nice dancing though.

Luckily, some have admitted defeat and lower the price and are willing to work with a player super collector. Some use it as leverage to make a profit. And those are the cards I'll never own.
As far as value goes for anything not just cards. It is only worth what someone else is willing to pay you for it. I don't care about supply and demand, or utility, or anything else.

In the end, no such thing in easy money if you are being honest. You can make money, it take time and work. Hence what they were made to be " collectables "... Ill never under stand this right... U got that Tom Brady auto baseball card the 12/25 which is supposedly worth 500k if not more... Now I did some research... U can get MJ game (playoffs) used Jersey and shoes... Also Let Bron game used (playoffs) jersey and shoes for practically the same price... Now u tell me what u rather have?

Thats a low print run thats valuable. Or my low 1 of one judge gold allstar 2018 card? Thats a low print meaning some value. The lower the print run a higher value. It depends on the demand of the low print item card your selling.
