I’ve always watered at night because thought watering in heat of day would rot roots with black container being so hot adding water boils roots 🤷🏻♀️ specifically talking Crown of Thorns succulents don’t like too much water.
Thank you for this video! My boyfriend and I had this discussion last night because I was going out to water the plants before bed and he said…that’s the worst time to water. I was like, ok crazy man you clearly don’t know about water burning the plants hahaha. The funny thing is, while I was saying it I actually thought about rain during the day but dispelled it because clearly rain has magic water that won’t burn my plants🤷🏻♀️
I always wonder why women, instead of chosing to learn from their partner, choose to be ignorant and disrespectful to their partners and treat them as if they don't know what they said and had lied to you. This is the real mystery, not this joke of a watering at night stuff that only the silliest of people believe in that somehow never heard of mold. Perhaps it's projection of a women to assume others lie which drives their need to have the same points reiterated to them by someone not their partner.. anywho, best of luck in your gardening. It will go a heck of a lot easier for you if you're capable of respecting your partner and treating what they say as value or you can continue to listen to others repeat what they already said while trying to tell yourself you care about this person. One isn't trying to make money off you but they should, the other is.

Funny you have thiws vid.. I say this because I could never understand the theory behind watering plants during hot part of the day being harmful either. I've watched how fast the leaves dry off while watering a row of plants and within a few minutes the first plants I watered have dried off before I even finish the row. If they were starting to wilt, I can see them pop back up within less than 1/2 hour. Great discussion!
The solid science that proves that it's better to water in the evening is based on my lazy behavior and inability to wake early.

Trying to appreciate the early days and sunny mornings we get as it doesnt last long in these parts 😁 I water once in the morning give my veggies and flowers a good soak. If its suppose to rain I then hold off to see how the day goes and of it doesnt rain by like 5pm I will give some h2o 😁

The “lens effect” is really something that applies more to foliar sprays, which sometimes has chemicals or residues that can burn leaves under a hot sun or bright lights especially. People often conflate foliar spray with “watering during the day,” and confusion ensues.

Is there anything you haven't covered? I literally typed in "watering plants at night" at 9pm in the Caribbean while watering my veggies and there u are at recommendation number 3. We need to see you at the top!!!! But I do continue with another watering before dawn as well and halt till 2 in the noon as the days are long, super windy and hot. Fruit set has been satisfactory so far

I saw that myth about water being a magnifying glass during the day to your plants on Bill Nye the Science guy in 8th grade. I remember because I didn't understand and the other day I was thinking about that too when I was watering during the day. The way I see it is I an lowing their temperature to what they prefer anyway and like you said it evaporates fast off the leaves.

Thank you for the expert advice. I’ve believed the plants should be watered in the morning because of the plants burning. I owe my neighbor an apology for telling him to water the garden in the morning not in the hot daytime sun. I’m definitely no expert gardener but I for years as a youngster took care of the family garden as far as weeding and watering and rototilling. Told don’t you water that garden in midday sun.

I water when I get around to it 😆 which is usually around 11 am, and have seen no ill effects. I have always thought it was a bit of a silly debate, if you think your plants need water, then water them, don’t wait for the “optimal “ time! If the only time you can get to it is evening, then that’s better than not watering at all. I mostly agree with you on the “burnt leaves” theory being bunk, with the exception of African violets. I top watered mine once (I’m kinda sloppy when I water) and everywhere there was a water drop on a leaf, there was a brown spot a day or so later. Don’t know what caused it, but I bottom watered it from then on.
Yea, I mean there is going to be exceptions. There are a few plants I’ve had that I definitely think are affected by top watering
Don’t let cucumber plants leaves get wet when watering. I went on vacation and the person who watered them for me watered the leaves and killed every plant

Usually water in late morning but I haven’t had issues watering later if the garden needs some help. I’m in zone 5b, in the NE part of the GTA.

Interesting. I'd always watered mine at night because I wanted the water to have a chance to soak into the ground before it could evaporate from the heat. I also have done so early in the morning for the same reason. I figured it would give the water a chance to get down to the roots. I live in the Greater Toronto area. Hamilton, to be precise. I don't know what zone that is. I've never looked it up. But I'm relatively new to gardening. Thanks for the tip.

I avoid watering between 12-18 PM, cause containers usually are quite hot, and water quite cold (sometimes I have a few spare buckets of water at ambient temperature saved from washing greens or other stuff, but it's a treat just for a couple of lucky plants).
Also, it's so damn hot that I will be tempted to drink a third of that water myself.
I usually avoid wetting aerial parts of the plants, cause I had bad experience with high umidity and xanthomonas leaf spot, expecially in Spring. Also, can't stand white calcium deposit on otherwise shiny green leaves.
Yes the water spots are the worst. They are so obvious on darker green leaves I find. If it’s an ornamental plant I’m growing for foliage i try to avoid as much as possible.
For the hot pots and water that’s a good idea. I could see that shocking the roots for sure, if it’s jarring to you as a human the plants feel the same hhah

It's hot and dry where I live, so I've been watering at night to keep moisture in the soil longer. I'll give morning watering a shot and see if I can tell a difference.

I agree with watering in morning. Before I knew much about gardening a family member asked me to water their trees while they were away, a day or so later he chided me because The leaves were wilted and yellow because I watered them on a hot sunny day. Now if I water I do it before the sun is hot- early morning or just water the soil of the plants any other time of day.
Sandra Jones that’s how I was taught to water also. Burns the leaves of plants. Maybe the plants burned from over watering, I don’t know. But I’m gonna take her advice being I’m no expert.
Hi zone 8b here Vancouver BC. I see i water twice a day am and pm, maybe that’s why some of my vegetable plants has some kinda disease I don’t know what it is and my Malabar spinach has spots and little bit yellow leaves, and i water on top of the leaves. Am a newbie in container gardening. Thanks for this video and i need more info. On how to water plants and how much. I think sometimes i over water and most of the time its raining here in Vancouver. I am in Maine I. Want grow huge plants what should I do
I seen videos of a bottle of water magnafiying the sun and starting a fire ! , what about seedlings ? Some times the water droplet will bead up in the very center of the seedling , possibly acking like a magnifing glass ?
I tried to do a set time - morning or late evening; but I'm oddly more consistent if I just water plants when they look like they need watering - any time of day. I'll check the soil a couple inches down and if it's dry, give the area a drink.
I never understood the 'lens effect' - if it was real wouldn't you see great swathes of brown after a sun shower? Sun shower = light rain when it's sunny out.

Like I said for my plants I water in the evening and I mean I definitely can see it’s effects on some of the plants in terracotta pots or larger size plants but overall it’s not hugely detrimental. I have a life outside of gardening unfortunately so I agree things don’t always line up perfect.
The lends affect 😂🤣 girl me and you are on the same page. Myths like this are what turns folks off when it comes to plants and gardening. Completely agree you’d see entire forests of burnt trees.

Especially for container gardening, there are not much videos so that might be the good one. 😊😊

From one container gardening Torontonian to another, a sprinkler, timer and a hose allowed me to take a 3 week trip last July and keep my garden going strong. Almost too strong 🤪 I returned home to a jungle!

Zone 8 here. When it is really hot i try to avoid watering during the heat of the day due to the soil being warm and the water being cold, now if my plants put on their dramatics from lack of moisture i will water mid day. I container garden so i water early morning and late afternoon everyday when it is hot. IE today our heat index was 106 and the plants definitely needed 3x water. Do you think this is ok. I do thoroughly water with drip irrigation till water comes out the bottom of the containers.
Yea absolutely! nothing wrong with that. It’s arguably impossible to over water an activity growing plant, in a container, in 109 degrees F.
The only caution which I’m sure you know from some of my other videos is that nutrients is water soluble in most cases. So just ensure your adding fertilizer. Biweekly would be ideal for your Situation.
I watered in the AM. Never while the sun is at its hottest. Was told PM watering can rot the plants. Alberta 2B.
dymondwillow2 that’s a solid tactic you have! I’ve never seen the rotting of evening watered plants but I can see why that concept prevails.
I think it has a valid foundation when it comes to watering plants outside of your zone that are already under an certain set of persistent stressors like temperature drops and such.

Since I am not a morning person, my watering starts at the apex of the day and then before my day ends, so the plants have water overnight and hopefully, some leftovers in the morning. The delicious veggies I grow, attest to that. Other veggies like tomatoes, and turnips, only once a day, as they like a slightly more arid and mildly acidic soil. One thing that causes plants to burn is during the middle of the summer, plants that shouldn't be in the direct sunlight for extended periods, such as radishes.

Much prefer middle of the day watering, you can almost see and feel the plants drinking lol... one of those, I've just watered this planter, like 10 minutes ago, type of situation.
Plus the bees are out working too, at that time so... you know... never alone, never a dull moment out in the garden.

Only time I’ve seen the watering at mid day to 2 pm is at the hotter months, and the only reason i’ve seen the problem is when people under water the plants…. It end ups being the same as adding hot water to the roots. But if you add sufficient water you end up regulating the soil temp and nothing bad hapoens👌 my 2 cents👋

My mom always told me to water in the morning she just says that plants seem healthier that way. I wake up pretty late tho but i try my best to water them mid day when it’s not too hot? I think i read somewhere it shocks the roots but idk if that’s scientific fact...
I mean it might but it honestly depends on exactly how hot your area is and how hot or cold your water maybe. I think they best time to water as a hobbyist is when you have time. I don’t think stressing out or giving up gardening because you can’t water in the morning is a good idea.

Yea that’s a really great question! And it’s relatively similar in regards to the parameters of each zone. So a Canadian zone 3 is identical to an American zone three. The reason it works this way is because your have to account for Alaska which is a USDA zone range of 3B to 1B. Without Alaska as your lower range I’m sure it wouldn’t match up nearly as well.
They are done by two totally separate entities though. The Canadian one is agriculture and agri foods Canada. The American one is the USDA. The characteristics used to define the zone are identical ranging from precipitation, temperature, elevation, etc.

Newly planted daily. Older one good watering once a week unless if it really warm out then twice
I don’t understand the logic of watering I the afternoon for simple reasons. I grew up in the subtropics and yet was green everywhere. I’ve been in rainforest, tropical and temperate, all green. Lastly I’ve been in the desert…not much in the way of green usually.
The reason sun scorchers leaves when watering and not while it’s raining is because it’s cloudy and the clouds block the harsh sun rays and don’t burn the leaves.
Because if we sweat it's good for us right if we don't sweat it's not it's the impurities I don't know I'm asking

Water needs to be shaped as a lens in order to burn. Water in a plastic bottle can be hazardous.

I like to get to them before the heat of the day. Gives them time to soak it up and prepare to be blasted by the sun. Especially around here where the average temp is around 90F this time of year.

I was watering my plants with tap water for years I stopped doing that and I water with filtered water 0.0 my tap water was 0.9 I'm talkin about a decade and in a month after I stopped using tap water I see the biggest different in plants then I ever seen in any fertilizer change or anything just the water changing it to inline filter I see the biggest difference I ever seen just in one month unbelievable and I use aloe with the 0.0 water every other water unbelievable
I thought oxygen was a byproduct of photosynthesis. Photosynthesis uses sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water.
