    • @Helveteshit
      @Helveteshit Před 7 lety +6

      I think they use scent to help their memory to some degree as well. I reckon if one cleaned that maze perhaps. It might traverse it curiously once more as if to ascertain it is the same maze or not.

    • @edwardholmes91
      @edwardholmes91 Před 7 lety

      Helveteshit Possibly, I guess we tend to forget how much animals use scent to find their way around things... as humans scent senses aren't as strong.

    • @satanismybrother
      @satanismybrother Před 7 lety +2

      its a good question - are they just tracing their smell? to an extent, yes. This is why neuroscientists (Richard Morris) developed the hidden platform water maze experiment. Mice (or usually rats) have are places in a pool of water where there is a hidden platform where they can rest. They can't follow scent or visual cues, it simply tests their luck and then on subsequent runs, their memory. The first time they'll swim about randomly a bit until they find the platform. The next time they do it they'll swim a bit more randomly but usually find the platform quicker. By the third or fourth time they usually head straight for the platform. Rodents learn quick.

      They have no bladder control and they constantly leak urine. Their urine especially the male mouse house mouse and deer mouse uses it to mark its territory and to attract a mate . The urine has a very strong distinctive smell of ammonia. It’s highly dangerous and toxic to humans same with their droppings saliva and everything they touch particularly when it dries and becomes airborne. I only found this out because of a mouse infestation in my house . I knew nothing about mice. I didn’t know how dangerous to your health they are even deadly. I feel awful laying traps. I cried the other night when two were caught. They are so beautiful. Not a mark on them. They were killed outright and didn’t suffer. But it’s still horrible. My health has suffered dreadfully I’m already very sick and disabled. I’m moving out. But they are very smart and very cute. Funny to watch in these videos. This video is awesome and fun to watch. Mice are little hoarders and they take stuff back to their nest. The nest will be very close to the food source. They have to constantly gnaw on things to keep their teeth short. So they will chew through wood virtually anything they can even electrical cables which is very dangerous! They can live without water and they will absorb fluids from seeds nuts cereal you name it. They will eat soap and even glue or cardboard and paper. And shockingly eat each other! If they can’t find food that is. So they’re omnivores. Not sure why I gave you all this useless information. But they are fascinating I have to admit. So yes I’ve done my homework. I had to I guess 😉

    Wow, wild mice are a lot smarter than lab mice. My mom is a research professor at the University of Maryland school of medicine in the department of anaesthesiology and the mice used for behaviour study are really dumb. These mice seem to have adapted to their surroundings much faster than trained or lab mice. I guess evolutionary development in biology is making an effective change in mice, making them smarter or used to the catch eat and escape tactic of that specific trap and surrounding.
    Or the trap is just faulty...

    It's interesting that when presented with immediate food (peanut butter) and storable food (seeds), the order of priority was:
    1. Store easy seeds
    2. Store hard to get seeds
    3. Eat immediate food
    Shows good instincts for storing food for later.

      You would learn fasts as well if you could mark every corner of a maze with your piss and then actually differentiate between all the markings like they were drawn with a glow in the dark pen. This is very normal task for rodents even in the wild, it requires very little in brain function.

    • @huldu

      That sounds quite bad! Isn't the chance higher to die in a traffic accident due to a drunk drinker than catching that disease? Or just walking outside and getting hit by a icicle in the head and die from it(seems to happen a few times a year). My point is everything more or less is out to get you and you're always playing with odds just stepping into the car every morning to get to work.

    After watching a few of your videos, I've noticed that the mouse is very determined to get every last piece of bait. I suppose with nothing but time to do so gathering the easy to get to stuff is more worthwhile than scavenging for more difficult food. However it is still interesting that it doesn't miss anything. It becomes aware of every last thing and gets all of it.
