  • Today we're going to listen to a comparison between a Neve 1272 Vintage original and various popular clones. I bounced a total of 6 stems through each of the preamps and then did a stereo mixdown. You can download the stems and the stereo mix down below.

    Sorry for the clickbait 🙈 But I thought I'd do a series trying out various Neve style preamps.

    Nice video and well structured comparison! I just got my GAP Premier DLX a couple of weeks ago and run it into an RME interface, so I kind of have best of both worlds referring also to your Hallelujah video ;-)

      So I actually did download the stems and had a listen in my studio. Very interesting! I mainly compared the Neve and the GAP, since I have the GAP, and (with the risk of being called a snake oil-corksniffer) I feel that the Neve has some sort of clarity in the high register that gives the sound a slightly more open feel. The most noticeable difference I though hear in the lower registers, especially on the more intense drum parts and the "chagga-chagga" guitar parts. It's like there's something more responsive in the dynamics of the Neve. It's not easy to tell if I listen to the full mix, but soloing the individual stems there is something... And it gives the Neve a more full, "fleshy" and 3D kind of quality. And now is the time that you tell me that all tracks are the same... :-D

    Great comparison as always. I think the AML could have been driven a bit harder in order to render higher saturation levels and in the process gain more presence. What exactly is the ITB ?

    Sorry to burst your bubble here man, but the 1272 is NOT a 1073, the closer comparison would have been with a 1290 and the clones. The 1272 was Neve's Bus amp in his vintage consoles. I don't know anyone making an exact clone of that unit, but the comparison should have been either between Neve line preamps and these clones or just do it between the clones, but they weren't made for bus duties like the 1272 and the way you used them here, in your comparison, these were just line preamps used for single instrument tracking.

    • @Christian_svedin
      @Christian_svedin  Před 3 lety

      Thanks! I'm aware of this that's why I also pointed that out in the video. A modded 1272 should practically be the same as a 1290 up to 50dbs of gain?

    • @CeZarMusic
      @CeZarMusic Před 3 lety

      @@Christian_svedin No-no, the approx 50dbs amp limit is where your modded 1272 would sound close or almost identical to the 1272 Neve used on the console, but above that it will have a different sound to the original, and that's because your 1272 is wired after an interpretation of how Neve would have done it, but it isn't identical, which affects the end result. The only true way to compare is side by side with the unit inside the vintage console, but even that one will be serviced and re-serviced, recapped and probably many components changed because they stopped producing them as the decades passed and they gradually became obsolete.

      @CeZarMusic Před 3 lety +1

    Liked the 1272 a lot, and I think the STAM was my favorite.
    I thought the GAP sounded interesting, definitely 'good' and adding something. Also definitely (subjectively) inferior to the other two.
    AML sounded like shit, which shocked me, as AML is highly regarded, and the only name on this list other than Neve that I have respect for.
    Great comparison, thanks! :)

      I do like the GAP. It is cleaner which is sometimes just right. The saturation doesn't sound grainy or bad either. Def best bang for the buck. I don't own the Stam so it would take some more time to really get a definite opinion. The 1272 is very nice ofc! Yeah sold the AML heh.. Thanks for watching ✌️

    A single gain stage pre amp meant for a line level, 1272, vs the three gain stages of a 1073 clone? Not a very fair comparison, and yes the 1073 is pretty overrated although great on mono sources but narrow when used on stereo source.

    Aml is the most overrated mic pre. So unbalanced sound and there is too much 800hz - 1khz . I will not be surprised that many people on Gearslutz praise it, because of endorsement and free gear. Same goes for Avedis and so on.
