Old and new shows that could be lost forever is we're solely reliant on streaming. It's scary times for movie and home media lovers and desparate times may sometimes call for desparate measures. I'm a starter collector and I gotta say, one of the main reasons I get bootleg DVDs and Blu-Rays is mainly the price of things. I live in Brazil, a place where the accessibility to culture is almost considered luxury because of low salaries and high cost of everything, so piracy is usually the way to go with most things here.
And yeah most will say "well then why not just torrent it?" But where's the fun in that? I wanna start a collection because I think it's fun, and if getting bootleg DVDs and Blu-Rays is the only reasonable way to do it without having to sell a kidney then I'll do it

Some of the bootlegs out there are put together out of a love for the movie, and a frustration over a lack of physicality. I personally feel like there are exceptions where bootlegs are absolutely fine. It's hard to take absolutes on a stance, but with the terrible re-releases with regrades, new sound channels, and upscaling are so frustrating. It's always overmarketed as the new thing. Then every sucker preorders it, and they're very disappointed a lot of the time.

My Point of view on this debate is, if I'm paying £9.99 per month for streaming and I want a physical copy I should be able to own a physical copy, if the company don't release a physical copy then me sourcing my own is my own business, I've still paid to view it originally.
I agree with the moral arguement, if studios cared, they'd release for fans, they'd have the customers back but forcing £9.99 to watch a show is not moral on their side.
I won't buy digital as if I lose access or cancel my subscription I lose access to that purchase. They don't allow you to keep it. Apple used to but I'm not sure if they still do.

And I feel the same, that if a official release comes out then I’ll get rid of my bootleg, for some movies & tv series if there’s no release out there then I’ll go down the bootleg route, as for digital not for me, I want to own the movie that I’ve purchased, a copy of.
Agreed buying digital hurts physical media that’s why I won’t buy it, they’ll always be options I’m sure, I use to get a few Stinky Tuna copies & they supplied many great unreleased movies & shows.

    • @ajsmovieplace
      @ajsmovieplace  Před rokem +1

      They knew this would happen.
Especially Disney - they give us and interconnected film series with a huge fan base. The start releasing TV series that share some of the Interconectivity but don’t give a toss when it comes to the physical media collection - who they know will then turn this way. It was expected and anticipated. It’s all part of the journey of attempting to ween the consumer away from the physical to the digital. This is how I see it.
But I fork out money for seasons 1 - 5 of Agents of Shield for 6&7 to never come. I pay for all the marvel Netflix shows ( that again share connectivity ) Only for them to release nothing from defenders and onwards. What is the obsessed collector supposed to do 🤷‍♂️. This is a Monster ( probably a bit dramatic a term ) that they themselves have created. But they know this will only be for a limited time.
I mean between illegal downloading and Bootleg blue ray. I’m sure the bootleg makes up about 0.00001% of those combined ‘trades’.

I don't own many bootlegs and have in fact never bought any, the ones I have were gifted to me. Everyones points are valid in this discussion so there's no definitive answer. Its been going on for years and will continue for years to come, just like the illegal streaming services that exist instead of subscribing to the official ones. People want free stuff and collectors want complete collections. As for digital/streaming i'm not a fan of that simply because of quality, its just not as good and probably will never be in my lifetime. I do own a few digital downloads from when iTunes began and because I downloaded the files I still have them as originally presented despite them now removed from iTunes, so keeping digital can be done but of course 'buying' movies digitally is now pretty much gone. I'm with you AJ on your stance. Being in Australia I sub to Disney+ and previously supported their titles through JB HiFi. Since the canning we know that the physical media collectors will be left in the cold in favour of streaming and digital purchases. This has opened up the bootleg discussion which shouldn't really be a thing if they made the titles available. Importing from the US is wickedly expensive here. Prey for example will be around $80. A far cry from the $30 we're used to. I hope and pray WB and the rest don't follow suite. Bootlegs aren't perfect but serve that tactile experience we love. Turn this ship around Disney!

I do not sell anything it is strictly for me. Of course I could watch them through streaming (I subscribe to all the main ones) but I love to have a copy on my shelf. I have multiple copies of movies from vhs to 4k, and if companies make their content available to purchase physically I will buy them. It is the same with gaming and emulation, if Konami would release snatcher for modern consoles I would not have to emulate the game. And the DVDs that were released are plagued with visual and audio issues. IMHO, the biggest offender of this is the Dragon Ball franchise. Both the original DB & GT never got HD releases in either US, UK, or Australia. Not to mention the higher quality Japanese audio for all three original anime shows being leaked online for the fans to enjoy. So EG as you said no season 8 of homeland , Claire Danes decides no one needs a set to finish it , by all means it should be free game . She knows that would make money , this is not theft , its IP legal bullshit and control. I agree with you, especially 'offensive' is when you buy seasons year after year, and then they just stop releasing it. Besides Homeland you mentioned, same happened to the last season of Strike Back. Earlier 'they' ditched Ray Donovan after season 3, as well as The Strain. That one, btw, started with a whole 'head' bust collectable, then simple Season 2, Season 3 only in some European countries, and S4 just on DVD. I'm not buying something in worse quality, than it aired or streamed (although I do buy some BD series that have 2160p UHD streaming copies).
Now I'm afraid they won't finish Blacklist, as S10 is airing, and last release on BD was season 8. I know it's probably due to low sales, 60+% of home media market is still DVDs, and I don't mind buying and watching them for older shows, but not new ones.
Marvel's SHIELD had these great digipacks, and last two seasons are only out in Japan, so I imported them for about $80 each, thanks to weaker yen, as usually their releases cost 100+. Same with a Boxset of "24", they got all seasons out in Japan from Fox before Evil Disney 'consumed' them, so now I'm even more sure of my $350 purchase.
But I haven't resorted to buying bootlegs yet. I don't pay for digital copies either, not even a single streaming service, I just download pirate rips, 1080p up to UHD with 10 bit color (no HDR for me, just hate how it looks), and keep them on external portable HDDs. Got over 80 of them (320-500gb mostly, only last 20 are 1-2tb) accumulated in 20 years, and they're part of my physical collection, mostly because of such TV series.
I do go further in 'stealing', and download most movies I become interested in, but I buy those I liked, and just keep the rest I didn't hate on HDD. I believe I wouldn't have bought those anyway, so I'm not really stealing, and actually buy a lot more due to downloading first. Kind of like quality control and assurance. You wouldn't usually buy food or clothes you haven't tried, same with movies for me. 😁

I didn’t realise season 9 of blacklist didn’t come. You follow and collect then get shafted. It’s out of order. I get sales may not warrant a release. But from my perspective I don’t care. I expect that season to be fulfilled.

I think it's perfectly legal to stream stuff if you're not the person hosting it. Now owning a physical copy could be illegal if you downloaded it yourself but again you're not the one that made it so that's kinds of iffy and they don't usually go after individuals anymore. But I'm not sure if it's a good idea to display things online Now people might still consider it unethical. Now I've heard, but I can't find anywhere online whether or not this is true, that if you pay for a streaming service you're allowed to have a copy for when the site goes down or has buffering issues. I'm not sure if you can only keep the copy while you have the service. Most collectors will purchase a legit copy if it gets released.because they're not buying the copy to watch it because a lot od movies you can find free to stream or on services that you pay for. The fact that collectors are going out of their way to buy something that they can stream for free shows that they're willing to pay for it so they usually will pay for it legitly unless they don't have the money to pay for another copy or they don't like the movie anymore. Now a way a person could feel completely good about this ethically but maybe not legally, is to pay to buy a digital copy that you're probably don't even care about and then a physical. now I don't like that he's advocating to buy a digital copy. Because he knows you don't actually own it and it sends the wrong message to them that you're willing to be fine with a digital copy. I could see you renting a digital copy if it's not on a streaming service. I've done this to support actors or filmmakers I like. I think buying digital copies goes against his original concept for his channel. The only time I've bought one movie digitally, other than codes that came with the movie, was because the movie was out of print and not a popular movie so I doubt I'll find it physically. But I'm crossing my fingers still.

You make some great points within
I will say this video want made with any Malice or malicious intent towards Jeff ( Geoff ? ) from films at home. He has a fantastic channel which like so many others use as a place of information and intrigue.
I just felt strongly that “ Hey - there’s a flip side for this argument and I feel I could juxtapose with my thoughts “.
I have to though about the whole sharing online. And honestly I hope that Disney et al take note and come to realise that there is a market for this stuff and have a turnaround on their position.
If anything they should be flattered that a void they have created is being filled by passionate individuals within a dying niche market that are eager for this stuff. So much so that they are willing to not only pay for their service ( as I do ) but also want their content on a physical disc.
This is a monster of their own making. As if they had been released - I wouldn’t be resorting to what I am.
Morally - me personally - I’m fine with it. I can justify my position ( right or wrong ) and sleep comfortably at night.
Now the bootlegging of media ( films etc that are in the cinema or are getting a physical release ) is a completely different kettle
Of fish and my argument would contradict my thoughts on that which we never see physically !

I think rentings fine but paying full price for a movie that you don't own, with no special features, that doesn't even have a box or artwork seems crazy to me and sends the wrong message. Bring on Beastmaster 4K for some real fantasy. Lol Screw digital with a capital S!

Just wondering about the sitch with 3D. In 2017 everyone stopped releasing 3d BluRays. I first bought bootleg, then in 2020 I found Zavvi of official ABC discs.
Now in 2023, 3d Blu Rays are nowhere to be found. Even the world ABC discs became BC discs. No official A region discs.
Also add to the fact that none of the streaming services offer 3d, I am literally shut out if the market.
What do I do for my 3d sitch?

If you took down my previous comment because it links to nothing, try again. I spent 2 hours type-talking the first page. I admit i shouldn't have put up the link until it was ready. But now it's ready.
If you don't do any links on your CZcams website let me know. I'll look at the one you erased a couple hours ago and try it on your browser if it comes up, and it's not against your policy please bring it back up. I'll politely not refer to it until you refer to it. If you don't remember that URL try your history when you saw a one-line page and reload it.

I am still waiting for Season 21 onwards of The Simpsons on DVD/Blu Ray. I doubt we will see them officially released. It is a shame that they stopped releasing them. I am in the UK and sometimes US/Europe/Australia get some releases of other films/series and we don't. It is annoying!!
