    My biggest mistake investing was at the beginning. I'd just search for any products that were on sale/ well below retail rather than good high quality stuff like sealed booster boxes. I stocked up on a bunch of ancillary items that, even though will probaby go up in value overtime, aren't as liquid and a pain to store. To echo one of your points, it really helps to invest in items you peronsally like so even if it goes tits up, at least you have something you enjoy.

    Went to a card shop that opened near my work. Haven't looked at pokemon cards since they came out (1st three sets). We both fell in love with the new 151 set and even started collecting for our new born son. I then got deep into the investing information and decided to get a few UPC's to keep for a decade or 2. Now hearing about the reprint is kinda worrying me about a drop in price... guess we will see !!! 😅

    I’m concerned about the health of this market over the long term. Much of this hobby is driven by artificial scarcity. EVERYONE is buying sealed product. The secret is out. So how can you say that sealed will be in demand 10-20 years down the line, when we’re all buying it up currently? We’re all sitting on 151 boxes. We’re all sitting on Evolving Skies boxes. This stuff isn’t rare. Vintage stuff has legitimate rarity because there weren’t a ton of “investors” back then. Now, everyone and their mothers are in this thing buying sealed and storing them in closets. More than enough to meet demand. So yeah I don’t think this market has legs. The whole thing feels like a house of…well, cards.

    • @PMTCards
      @PMTCards Před měsícem +9

      Agreed 97%.. I think my only
      Counter is that it depends on expectations… people want to get rich.. but realistically if you bought in at $95 and can sell it for $150, it’s still a “decent” return.. or at least not a loss (minus fees, taxes, shipping etc.).. once stuff is no longer on shelves gotta assume the value of the product won’t necessarily go below msrp anymore.. so you can make $10-30 on each box or can hope there is a box that skyrockets and you make $1000 on it..
      Where I think people will get screwed is buying up stuff like evolving skies at 7-800$ a box.. and thinking it’ll be $5000 at some point. It “could” but I don’t think that particular risk is worth it with current print numbers.

    • @k8wf
      @k8wf Před měsícem +12

      I think being around or seeing lots of content where people hoard sealed product makes it seem like there are more investors than there actually is. Sealed product is a drop in the ocean compared to what's been ripped already. The future generations who will want to open/ purchase sealed stuff are still in school and will want to have these cards decades later. You can even see SwSh products rising in real time despite being modern. I don't doubt modern will never reach base set prices but it'll definitely increase over time to the point where some smart investments can return some profit.

      @@PMTCards $95-150, then less selling expense of 15-20%, is your profit, then divide by the time to aquire, then sell,
      and your "profit" is not that exciting.
      Also hard to do this at scale due to time involved.

    • @PMTCards
      @PMTCards Před měsícem

      @@theboringchannel2027 I get it, but I think where people that live by “investing” in Pokemon.. lets say you bought a case of each set. That’s 6 booster boxes of each. There has historically been 2-3 sets that barely move and 1-3 sets that go to the moon. My point is, if you have the money and space to let it just sit, once a set is out of print.. it’s very very very unlikely you won’t be able to unload it for at least msrp (outside of a major turn in the market). However, you will have a set that rose 40%, another 20% and another 2000%. You’re kinda hoping for the home run, but the “smart” way of doing this is to just buy all sets..but that’ll mean you bought less of the home run set..
      But that’s just like the stock market.. very hard to time the bottom and top, some
      People get lucky, most just spread it all out and take smaller gains.
      My biggest concern is people doing this INSTEAD of traditional investments. If you have an Ira or 401k or pension that you contribute max too, and this is something you do for fun.. 👍🏽👍🏽 it’s people hoarding evolving skies thinking it’s gonna let them retire early that concerns me. Of course they might hit the lotto with that say.. but also.. they might not

Yeah alot of people have ir but aome may sell for various reasons over time....buying house, emergency, marriage, etc. If you can avoid selling ur items throufh that it will continue growth. Also, targeting certain items (boosters, sleeved packs, 3 pack blisters) helps eith your goals too

    im not sure why you put so much emphasis on sealed products. singles are by far the safer more stable investment.
    when you buy sealed with the intention of opening it (and lets face it, opening is the end goal, eventually all sealed will become opened one day) you arent guaranteed a return, but when you buy a single card you know the worth of your investment immediately. sealed also takes up 10,000% more space, and space is becoming scarcer and scarcer these days. imagine you bought an evolutions booster box for $1000 and didnt pull the zard. the next best card is like $40. hell, even the zard is sub 100.
    youre not giving great advice to us by telling us we should bank on sealed product.

    This video was great, Phil! I had my little brother watching with me, and again, I got the "he's talking about Pokemon!?" Haha.
    I particularly agree strongly on the sealed items being the only true investments while cards are a slight gamble. I think of the Moonbreon in this scenario as it was a $600 when I pulled it, dropped down to $450, and then obviously the increase to $1000, with the current/eventual stabilizer at $800ish. This is a prime example on the type of anxiety and stress pokemon can cause if you're throwing your money in on a few big cards here and there. Obviously there are better examples of high-grade cards, but you get the point. I like sealed because of the comfort it gives me knowing it really will never drop.

    Pokemon has entered the "Junk Wax Phase" with the massive overprinting occuring.
    This will have a negative effect in the long run, just like it happened with baseball cards.
    Unopened from the late 80's and 90's are barely worth today, what they cost 30-40 years ago.
    I've been in pokemon since the late 90's,

    Do any versions of those TCG charts that everyone references get adjusted for inflation? Just wondering if anyone has taken a look into it. If not, it could create some false impressions of the gains/buyingpower people are actually getting, especially for people that hold for many years. I'd be interested to hear you discuss that kind of stuff in a future video.
    Looking at the current charts, the products are generally rising in value over time, that's clear. But what I almost never see talked about is a comparison of that rise in the product value vs inflation/devaluation of the dollar (or whatever currency). I'd rather make $100 from selling a card in 2014 than $100 from selling a card in 2024, because the dollar was stronger in the past than it is now, so that money had more buying power. That applies to any investment of course, not exclusively cards. How "inflation-proof" something appears should be a factor people look at when picking any investment that's to be held, be it a stock, ETF, collectable.
    Also wondering about Japanese cards and Yen with regards to inflation, considering how that exchange rate has been.

    Pokemon is In extreme bareish market. Sell your position while you can still make some type of profits. These cards are over printed. If a card is rare and only a few people have it. That card is a collectible if there are thousands and thousands of cards getting sent to PSA and pop report of psa 10s are rising. These aren’t collectible anymore if there are enough for everyone to buy 3. These are toys. Theres a difference between toys and collectibles. Your content is boring very unnatural sounds like Ai wrote your script. And you’re not being real and authentic to the viewers. Talk about other cards that are actually good collectibles. Not over printed and rare which hold value. Even the pop report of vintage is rising. You thought you had a 1/100 card then you find out it’s actually 1 of 400 psa 10.
