  • Birmingham City Council has declared itself in financial distress over multimillion-pound liabilities to settle equal pay claims.
In a statement on Tuesday, Europe’s largest local authority confirmed that it had issued the declaration that it cannot balance its books.
It said all new council spending in the city, with the exception of protecting vulnerable people and statutory services, must stop immediately.
TalkTV’s Kevin O’Sullivan says: “It’s very cowardly of the Labour administration and all of the councillors.”

I'm guessing it's went to pay the first half of the equal pay , exact same thing happened in Glasgow sold off loads of buildings to pay the workers , still ongoing ...

It's obvious people do not understand how this works, local politicains are very limited .They are part time though still paid and they often have no experience of running a large orgnaistion and they rely on senior officers to deal with the practicalities. What wil now happen is the officers who advised the councillors to do these things, will simply move sideways or even upwards to another authority or public body. I would sack them all and reverse their pensions.

Which begs the obvious question, why are we electing people into office who haven't a clue what they are doing, or perhaps worse not realising they are being lied to? If this happened in industry the country would be bankrupt wouldn't it? About time there were some minimum standards for MP's and Councillors in experience, not qualifications which cause the problems we have now. In addition if they had queries a 3rd party reference panel would at least prevent the most glaring mistakes. Why do we expect a butcher to also be an accountant?

No, they didn’t! Mostly men who were working dirty and dangerous jobs received a bonus. Mostly women were working non-dangerous & office jobs.
Apparently, working in an office is now “equivalent work” to someone fixing a sewer! 🤷🏻‍♂️

"mostly" Care to quote your sources (Trust me bro, is not a source). Clearly you havn't included care homes in your deeply researched statement. There are 9 care homes listed, thats a LOT of money in staff over many years, and thats just staff at the homes itself, not ancillery services. And thats just one thing the council are spending millions on. And thats mostly women. So kindly take your bigoted slur and try doing that job. And fuck yes, it can be dangerous.

So in the name of equal pay, it actually hurt the council and eventually the council need to lay off its workers. How does that benefits women now?

I spent 5 years working at BCC in the 80's. It was a mess bavk then. The labour councillors were crooked and fiddled expenses, the trade unions did everything they could do to disrupt and cling to restrictive practices. Much of their management practices were Dickensian. I came in as a private sector accountant and systems analyst to implement a new finance system but it was like wafing through treacle. In the end i got out before my career was ruined.
Now i have friends who dtill work there. They are just waiting for retirement, early if they can get it. The place has got worse with all the woke diveristy nonsense and a muslim mafia amongst councillors and their, often related, coreligionists amongst the staff.
