    Great explanation. When I first started seriously delving in to electronic production about a month ago, this was one of my main questions since a lot of content creators seem to regularly use the terms interchangeably. To my chagrin, googling for an answer at the time left me feeling even more confused. Today it finally clicked for me when messing around with my individual track levels in FL Studio. I realized that I was "mixing" my tracks together, and then it occurred to me that "mastering" must just be finalizing the "master track" ... lo and behold my more specific google query sent me here. Thank you for confirming! :)

    Mixing is putting the ingredients together. Mastering is the cooking process. The final product is the food you eat.

    Weezna, your explication of the differences makes TOTAL SINCE, to me anyway! I don't know why anyone would Master during the mix phase, unless they have found their own style of creating music, which would be cool to check out but overall, I too, agree, about keeping the two phases separate, it just makes good sense to be able to have a copy of your original mix save down, in case you want to revisit it or even make a new remixed version.

    You should do a video on auto tune and getting a less noticeable auto tune and the use of flanger, phaser on rap and r&b vocals

      Yeah that's a great idea. So i do have a video on getting a tuned vocal sound without it being autotuned. Check this out czcams.com/video/Gy8uS5FhpCk/video.html - Let me know if that helps!

    Question 🙋‍♂️ does it matter what version of the same song that I listen 👂 to like stereo world and descend was originally 3:32 and 5:25 but then changed to 3:25 and 3:28 and 3:31 and 5:23 and 5:21 do you have to decide what version of stereo world 🗺 or descend to listen 👂 to or can you listen 🎧 to either one like for r.e.m monster 25th anniversary did?

    Why do you need a mixed file and a masterd file

  • @abhranilchatterjee1906

    Hi can you just tell me that while you are mixing the speakers are set at half volume? Or they are kept at full and you are taking care the master track meter doesn't go red.....plssss tell...I'm quite confused abt these theory

    • @TMP313
      @TMP313 Před 5 lety +2

      You mix with headphones.... if you insist on using your speaker set the volume really really low... when its low... try to hear every thing your mixing...evenly

    I've heard of a file format called .flac being used for mastering. If this is true, then you seem to prefer having a mix and a master file/folder separate, perhaps specifically when the mixer and masterer are different parties.

    • @5urg3x
      @5urg3x Před 4 lety

      Flac is just a lossless Audio format it’s no different than Apples lossless format it’s just license and royalty free, it really doesn’t have anything to do with mastering.

    • @773Spair
      @773Spair Před 4 lety

      @@5urg3x I heard .flac is often used in mastering because the masterer can edit individual tracks as separate files or something, which I'm guessing is what you mean by "lossless."
      I can't say why .flac vs. Apple's format matters in this. Thanks for trying to help. I think I'll look up a video on .flac.

    • @5urg3x
      @5urg3x Před 4 lety

      Spair All digital audio is encoded somehow using a codec, same with video. It can be lossy (compressed, like MP3 audio) or lossless, like WAV. Flac is a simply a royalty free open source lossless audio codec. It has one advantage over WAV - it’s able to compress audio files without altering the quality, all of the original information is still there, nothing is lost. But with modern internet connections it really doesn’t matter if it’s a 40MB file or an 140MB file. Really the only reason to use it is to save hard drives space and be able to transfer files faster between remote sites. Doesn’t have anything to do with mastering afaik. Cheers.

    • @773Spair
      @773Spair Před 4 lety

      @@5urg3x Thank you. Though, I was told .flac took up much more space than .wav, and I thought there were things you could do with .flac which you couldn't with .wav, other than compress without quality loss, as you mentioned.

    I record a song on Voisey app that I would like to make into a track how does that work ??

  • @pbee73
    @pbee73 Před 4 lety

    I hate when people come to me with those MP3 beat files and try to rap or sing over them. Even if the are 320kbps it is still difficult to EQ because there are still artifacts in it. Much better if you can get your hands on a WAV file. In all honestly it is better to have everything separate because you can not change anything if its already a stereo 2 track. Yeah you can EQ it and add some processing but you might only end up making it sound worse.

    Do you think it's okay to add about 2dbs of mid boost EQ on the master channel for some mixes that overall sound a bit flat and THEN master it with it(myself or sending it out to an engineer)? Or am I just better of to do totally everything during mastering?
