Its also cool seeing how different some of these parts are from the final recordings. How much he develops the parts as they track. And also how challenging some of it was that he was pushing himself on this album which really set up the next albums. You can see the heavy factor really start on this album.
People still don't realize Portnoy wrote the 12 steps spanning over many albums. Each of the albums selected songs that are part of the 12 step concept reflect on each other to tie the whole story together over many albums. It's stuff like that that makes portnoy a superior writer and not just a good drummer. So for people who say this song sounds like this other song, that's why. It's intentional.

I heard fortune on the radio for first time in like the late 80s ... being a drummer and hearing the middle part where he and John lock in that sick pattern I was like “ who the f is this guy and band?!’ They immediately bridged the prog rock I loved with the 70s with metal ..changed my music life
as with almost every dream theater album, when i listened to this album at first I didn't enjoy it much, I thought it was too long and boring, but as I've looked into it more I realize how much of a masterpiece it is.
I love how mike played the drums to solitary shell wearing a kiss my ass shirt...little things like that shine a goofy reality onto the recording process...a singer recording these super emotional vocal parts in between the bouts of scream shitting from the bad chinese food that got delivered to the studio
Federico Ceri if I got my facts straight, MP tried to return but DT refused and kept mike mangini as to as they say “show that we do not hire temporary members”. I love MP and I want him back, but I understand DT, because MP decided to leave, then came mike mangini and there cannot be turning back cuz imagine them telling Mike Mangini “hey y’know we all wanted and needed you here with us cuz MP left and we needed a technically gifted drummer who can play the older DT songs and create new albums with us but now that MP wants to return, we want to tell ya goodbye. Aight, we gonna head out, bye!”
From one drummer to another holy shit mike portnoy to this day has always impressed me as a drummer and plus great studio video of making this album and live in the recording studio !!!! How awesome and amazing this is to see for yourself!!!😮

Wow. I think 6DOIT is by far my most favorite drumming mike has ever done! just true and outstanding insanity mess, crafted into creativity, awesomeness, dexterity, and mind warping epicenes! I am bummed out about a few parts thought... Like how they didn't show that crazy awesome solo in the beginning of "the test that stumped them all" or it would have been super epic if he had ended the video with the ending drum fill and gong hit! And they could have shown like 10-20 seconds of Despair!
I'm lucky to have seen Mike in a drum clinic in 1998 and met him my favourite drummer of all time beating out Peter Criss n Eric Carr All hail the new God 🤘🤘🤘🤘🥁🥁🥁🥁
Mike - I really love everything that you have done and speak about. You are a true treasure to the music industry which has turned so goddam bad that it is scary. I will always support what you do - (unless you start wearing Michaelo Angelo wigs and Evil Kanevil jumpsuits). yep it sure is the best progmetal :) i love some of their songs but not all of them... my favorite is A Change of Seasons... can you tell me for some similar songs?
Being able to play this music is one thing, bit writing it to begin with is what made the Portnoy era of DT truly incredible.
Absolutely right!
The same is valid with KM in DT, after him there is no full DT'album with melody and feel from beginnning to end...
@@lifeisajourney5789 SFAM was better tho

Mike Portnoy's drum tracks are actually fairly easy to pull off once you've learned his "licks"
Mostly RLRLKK RLKK or something simular to this but not less entertaining. ;)
i wonder if it's RLRL or LRLR or he doesn't give a shit and can play everything
Sergei Schvedt he always leads with his right limbs
