You actually didn't get many start boosts in this. The best boost is when your character turns red. After that the boost gets weaker. You want to wait a second to charge your start boost (like in Mario Kart) so that your character is red when the event starts.
Oh and that is awesome and thar is a 2d version on the right side of the screen
