The "Lost" Banana Splits

- Here is a short collection of 'lost' clips from "The Banana Splits Adventure Hour." First, two skits from the second season (1969-1970). Both are "Fan Letters" segments (#9 "Trunk Of Bananas" and #11 "Zipper Banana"). This routine sort of replaced the "Dear Drooper" segment from the first season. Rounding it off is the original Season 1 show closing (1968-1969), with a circa 1971 Hanna-Barbera end logo.

Thank You for posting this. Haven't seen it in about half a century. Most film and video recordings from that era are gone forever. The banana gag was shown at one time, but I cannot be certain exactly when. Very nice to see these rare and unusual prints again!
no skunks were harmed during the filming of this skit.

Just the sheer look of disappointment and on the verge of quitting XD
I was looking at the credits, and I saw the name Allan Melvin, and I knew it was him! We all know him as Sam, the butcher, on the Brady Bunch. I thought it was him. The Banana Splits were always fun and lovable! I also thought the Arabian Knights was a cool cartoon. Thanks!
Beautifulmusiclistnr is he still alive
don't 4get Paul Winchell
@@kascnef Sadly Allan Melvin has been deceased for many years, but he had quite the prolific career! Not only did he do voice overs on The Banana Splits, but he was, of course, on The Brady Bunch from time to time. He was also on Alice and Gomer Pyle, and he became a regular on All in the Family (aka Archie Bunker's Place).
@@ffdaddy69 That's true! Paul Winchell did Fleegle's voice and Tigger Too!
Appparently, the guys (except for Snorky) were brothers in real life (The Winkless Family),
If you want to check IMdB, do a search on their surname, one of them has directed episodes of Power Rangers. WOW, what a difference four decades make, where back in the 60's and 70's you had good clean-cut family entertainment, (but not politically correct) and nowadays it's either goofy, moronic no-brainers or just super-violent. Plus, in Japan, not only do they have a stricter education system than we do, they also have TV shows more violent than ours.

Yes, Richard Donner directed "Danger Island" as well as all the live-action scenes of the Banana Splits in the first season (see above). Ironically, Donner did not direct these particular segments (which are from Season 2) -- but he is properly credited as the show's overall director in the Season 1 closing credits.

Update: The Season 1 UK DVD set is just the edited half-hour syndicated shows as seen on Boomerang. WB just put out the second volumes of their "Saturday Morning Cartoons" series -- the 1970s Vol. 2 includes the first Banana Splits Adventure Hour in its one-hour Saturday morning format -- however, it is a repeat version with some edits and Season 2 opening, closing and bumpers on a Season 1 show. (Still much better than the half-hours.) The closing as seen here is the original Season 1 closing.
He was also Barney Hefner, Archie Bunker's friend, nextdoor neighbor and fellow lodge member on ALL IN THE FAMILY.

Why does Paul Winchell who does the voice of Fleegle only get last billing in the voice credits?
mistofoles Alphabetically listed credits.
They also left out the Winkless brothers' last name, who were the Banana Split suit performers. They just billed their first names, Terence, Daniel, and Jeff, along with their middle names, and mixed them with the Danger Island cast members in the end credits.

About the closing H-B logo -- Hanna-Barbera started using that particular end logo around 1966 or so when they were acquired by Taft Broadcasting. It was in use until around 1973 or 1974, I believe -- and there are different color variations; in some versions the H-B slides up and down and in others it zooms towards the screen, etc. I believe the "sliding" version would have been seen originally with this closing, but the "zooming" version may have been tacked on for international syndication.
I remember that closing H-B logo shown here from The Pebbles and Bamm Bamm Show and The Flintstone Comedy Hour
Around 1971 they dropped the jingle and you just heard the end of the show's theme. The Taft byline disappeared around the same time IIRC. In 1974 it was replaced by the rainbow logo, then the swirling star one in 1979.

1:56 ._.
@ToonORama Actually, to add to the information provided so far, it is confirmed that the "zooming" version shown here was used, for the most part, between 1968-1974. IIRC, this version debuted in the 1968-69 season, as seen on other shows. The Banana Splits was the only series using the red/blue sliding HB its first year. Two previous variants appeared on "Jack and the Beanstalk" in Spring 1967 (yellow over orange) and "Huckleberry Finn" (red-orange over yellow with Taft byline) also in 1968.

Season 1 is coming out on DVD in September in the UK. You can get a cheap Cyberhome DVD player at Target that can easily be reprogrammed to play multi-region DVDs. (I don't know of any plans to release the shows in the US.) There are lots of other clips from the show on You Tube -- another member has posted a few other Season 2 clips (which I don't have, and you won't see those on TV). Do a search for "Banana Splits second season."
When will season 2 come on DVD?

I can't imagine that this hasn't aired previously. I would say no. I'm sure this aired on TV before.
Yes! I remember him on All In The Family. I remember an episode of The Andy Griffith Show where he played a "bully" against Barney Fife. So, Andy got some guy (i.e. a fake Barney), who was the same height as Barney, to go down a dark alley night knowing that the "bully" would be waiting for Barney. Andy said to the "fake Barney" as he started walking down the alley "See you tomorrow Barney". Then the bully attacked the fake Barney who was actually a martial artist! lol Classic TV!
It's such a slight difference one might wonder why mess with it at all -- yet on some 16mm film prints I can see what look like splice marks originating from whatever master or negative they used. I know, extreme minutae...

You are correct -- also Richard "Lethal Weapon" Donner -- or were those movies directed by Richard "Banana Splits" Donner? (Since he did the Splits first.) Actually, though, the closing credits are from Season 1. The attached clips are from Season 2, and they have a different director (Tom Boutross). But all the shows you see on Boomerang, those were directed by Richard Donner.

I'm Guessing These Banana Splits Adventure Hour Season 2 segments, due to the age and quality of the footage, either came from 16mm or 8mm prints or they were recorded off TV while the episode was in syndication , Anyway this footage should be preserved forever because these segments are really rare and hard to find because most of The Banana Splits Adventure Hour Season 2 Footage is lost within the cracks of time...
