    This is a great instructional video. It does not matter if the tiles are easy to remove or very difficult to remove the video is a “how to” video and is only intended to show you the proper steps in doing the job. How many would be willing to sit down and watch a video where it takes five minutes to remove one tile? That would get boring very quickly. She may have already loosened the tiles for video purposes. Either way, it’s a great video.

    Definitely lucked out, diy'er install with the cheapest thinset. Usually the tile comes up with a demolition hammer easily but a quality thinset on a prepped floor is a bear to get up. When I bid a tile floor removal, I'll do a test on a few tiles to give a fairer price to homeowners.

    • @TheNiftyNester
      @TheNiftyNester  Před 3 lety

      I figured it was either cheap, they didn't use enough or just didn't know what they were doing. That's kind of the running theme throughout my house. It's a big undertaking. That's good to know about the demolition hammer for future reference. Do you remove the thinset with a similar tool to what I used or do you have another method you prefer?

    • @nailbndr9869
      @nailbndr9869 Před 3 lety +2

      I use a thinset removal bit for a sds plus hammer. It's about a 4" wide blade. I have my own bosch sds rotary hammers but for a lot of square footage I rent them because it's super hard on the hammers... I'd rather put the miles on rentals than my own, lol.

    • @TheNiftyNester
      @TheNiftyNester  Před 3 lety +1

      I do need to order some wider bits before doing another room, the one I have isn't very wide. 4" would probably save me a little time. We have a couple rooms that have original tile that isn't going to come up as easily as this room did.

    • @TheNiftyNester
      @TheNiftyNester  Před 3 lety +1

      That's a good question. When I first removed the tile in my kitchen and dining room I thought about going that route. They're pricey and I knew I had multiple rooms to do so I didn't want to rent one every time I tackled another floor. We already had the hammer drill so I only had to buy the chisel bit. Grinders are also worse about dust and we have an asthmatic kid so that didn't seem like the best route to go. All things considered this seemed like the most cost effective, least dusty option. You can definitely go that route, it would probably be easier for a larger space. That being said, if you're going to be pouring epoxy or staining the concrete without pouring leveler throughout the space then yes, I would definitely use a diamond grinder. Sorry for the long response lol.

      It's been a while since I bought that bit but I'm pretty sure I couldn't find the one I needed at Lowe's, I know I bought mine at Home Depot. You want a tile and thinset removal bit. They come in different sizes and fit different sized rotary hammer drills. I think I linked one from Amazon in the description as well that's similar to the one I used. Check Home Depot though, I always have better luck there with tools and bits. I hope that answers your question, let me know if you need any more help. Good luck!

    If I am wanting to just lay new tile, can I be much more casual with the thinset removal, and just put on a much thicker layer of thinset than I would have done otherwise?

    • @TheNiftyNester
      @TheNiftyNester  Před rokem

      So I've seen people pour self leveler over floors with a little thinset left on the floor to level them out before installing new tile but that's a more expensive route to go if your subfloor is already level and in good shape. Otherwise you kinda have to remove the thinset. The thinset makes your floor bumpy and uneven so, even if you use extra thinset to install the new tile, your floors are going to be uneven and the tiles won't sit right. It's a hassle but kind of unavoidable.

    • @TheNiftyNester

      I haven't personally installed carpet but I would guess that you probably need to. If you don't remove the thinset you might have issues with the padding underneath sticking and you might even be able to feel the thinset through the carpet.

    After moving into our new home, maybe because we live in the tropics, the adhesive from the peel-and-stick flooring started to ooze out between the cracks especially in areas of high foot traffic or heavy furniture applying constant pressure. Have you noticed any issues? 🤔

    • @TheNiftyNester
      @TheNiftyNester  Před 2 lety

    Way over kill, another trick is to spray the floor with white vinegar it acts like an acid will not hurt the concrete but will break up the thinset much easier if you're laying a thick laminate flooring you don't have to be too concerned unless there's really super high ridges

    • @adriennej.4428

    • @TheNiftyNester
      @TheNiftyNester  Před 3 lety

      I've only ever seen vinegar used to clean thinset off of porcelain tiles that people wanted to keep but I'll look in to using it for thinset removal, I've never heard of that trick. With peel and stick tiles, which is what I installed, the concrete needs to be as smooth and clean as possible. I would imagine laminate would adhere better to a smooth surface as well. If there's even the smallest peaks left on the floor you aren't going to get great adhesion with tiles like that.
