- The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says at least 71 Palestinians have been killed in an Israeli air strike on a designated humanitarian area, in an attack which Israel says targeted senior Hamas leaders.
More than 289 people were injured, according to the health ministry's statement.
Hamas says the strike hit the al-Mawasi area near Khan Younis, which the Israeli military has designated as a humanitarian zone, urging Palestinians to seek shelter there.
An Israeli official said the strike targeted the head of Hamas's military wing, Mohammed Deif, in an "open area" where there were "only Hamas terrorists and no civilians".

Mohammed Deif went above ground, together with the commander of the Khan Yunes brigade, they met in a building together with other terrorists less than 100 meters from the displaced peoples camp knowing very well that Israel would attack them if we know where they are. They put their own people at risk just to have a meeting, using human shields, which is a crime and against international law. They could have met anywhere and chose to do it smack in the middle of a huge civilian population where people are living mostly in tents. Hamas is saying immediately after the attack that hundreds were injured / killed in the attack. This number is likely a lie / exageration as it is not possible within minutes to count hundreds of deaths. Furthermore, any injuries and deaths are on Hamas for using human shields and using the area they chose for their meeting prior to the attack.
Mohammed Deif, Yahya Sinwar, these are dead men walking. They need to choose wisely the location when they go above ground as Israel WILL attack and delete them, they need to stop using human shields.

If you knew history, you would know the Israelis themselves fought the British by hiding among civilians and hiding their weapons under bakeries, places of worship and even schools. Airstrike targeting Hamas leaders in Gaza civilian area
Muhammad Deif, commander of Hamas' military wing, and Rafa'a Salameh, commander of the Khan Younis Brigade, were targeted by an IDF airstrike in the southern Gaza Strip this morning, Israeli military sources confirmed. The attack targeted a low-rise building located between al-Mawasi and Khan Younis, within a civilian area, but not in a camp for displaced Palestinians. The property was in a fenced Hamas compound and at the time of the attack there were several dozen Hamas agents, including guards.
The areas of al-Mawasi and western Khan Younis are part of a humanitarian zone designated by Israel. However, the IDF claims that the attack was precise and targeted exclusively at the Hamas site. According to their assessments, there were no Israeli hostages present when the attack took place. Military authorities are still awaiting confirmation of Deif and Salameh's deaths.
Meanwhile, the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry reported that at least 71 people were killed and 289 wounded in the attack, without saying how many of them were civilians. The IDF estimates that the majority of the victims were Hamas operatives.
Unverified images show destruction and search for survivors
Unverified images on social media show a large crater in al-Mawasi, where videos document Palestinians digging through the rubble looking for survivors. These images correspond to the air attack that targeted Deif and Salameh. The Gaza Ministry of Health stated that the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis received 20 bodies and 90 wounded, without providing definitive figures of victims transferred to other medical centers. These figures have not been independently verified.
Following the attack, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant held an assessment meeting with IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi and Shin Bet head Ronen Bar. The assessment was carried out “at the light of the latest events in the Gaza Strip.”
According to Channel 12's Yaron Avraham, senior Israeli officials discussed the dilemmas surrounding the attempted assassination of Deif in the hours before the attack. Without citing sources, Avraham said the assessment concluded that although the move could harm negotiations for the release of hostages, it would be strategically beneficial by showing Hamas leader in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar, that Israel can reach him too.
History of assassination attempts and Muhammad Deif's role in attacks
Deif, on Israel's most wanted list since 1995 for his involvement in numerous terrorist attacks, including bus bombings in the 1990s and 2000s, is believed to have played a crucial role in the October 7 assault on Israel. , where about 1,200 people died and 251 were kidnapped.
Over the years, Deif has survived at least seven assassination attempts, some of which seriously injured him or resulted in the deaths of members of his family. The last documented attempts were in May 2021, during the 11-day war known as Operation Guardian of the Walls.

The death toll reported by the health ministry has been historically accurate, and has been in the past verified by the UN as well as NGOs like human rights watch and Médecins Sans Frontières and therefore considered trusted by these orgs.

The first 3 corroborate roughly on total fatalities but cannot agree on demographic breakdown. The methodology used to obtain the numbers by the first 3 range from body count identification( the best and most accurate and only reliable way) to extrapolation from media footage and media sources (which is ridiculous ). The IDF methodology ranges in a similar manner and I’ll get to that. OSHA stopped using GMO figures by January because at that point their sources were unknown….until march when they started citing gmo figures indirectly by citing UNWomen numbers who were getting their numbers fromGMo and gmo citing osha figures in a circular feedback of numbers. (Fun). It was around this point that osha decided to use the ministry of health for its source. The ministry of health, moh, has had discrepancies with gmo especially when it came to women and children (far lower). Regardless of this change, problems persisted because it became increasingly obvious that the numbers they used were coming from “media reports “ which included “identified” (actual bodies) and the questionable “unidentified “ ( no body just rumor) all under the “media reports “ umbrella. On further investigation OSHA even had to cast doubt on their reports of “identified” because their figures would tend to repeat prior figures and upon even further investigation the previous numbers from body count accounting for sex and age identity were called into question because they partially identified them and as of today the data is growing more and more incomplete for OSHA . Now OSHA only reports that it can say with a likelihood of certainty the fatality rates, but not whether combatant, civilian, man, woman, or child. This is my baseline for raw fatality numbers and nothing more.
The IDF is unfortunately the only source in figuring out combatant fatalities except when Hamas lets their claims slip, but it is enough to combine with Hamas’ previous claims to get a semblance of the reality. The idfs methodology incorporates body count (best) , intelligence communication intercepts, and intelligence analysis of targets destroyed (worst). At the start of the war it was estimated that hamas had 40,000 combatants with 24 battalions (1000 man cohesive unit) and currently they claim that battalions have been reduced to 2. The idf also has a notorious history of having difficulty discerning between combatants and non combatants, but this kind of indiscriminate targeting gets reduced when facing a full battalion. As of now the idf is able to conduct operations within the majority of Gaza with vastly less frequency of impediment compared to the wars outset.
