I had a mechanic from El Salvador who maintained my 1988 LWB Exceed (sold it Jan 2020 after 15 yrs ownership) He had it up on the lift and would be working it - another customer would come in and say "Hey Fernando, what is the " he would yell back in an aggressive voice "Pajero" they would yell back "tu Madre"
Currently have a Prado (97) and, missing the Pajero, I have a 2000 Galloper II SWB on the way from Korea I bought in April.

The throttle knob is to allow you to warm up the engine whilst not being in the vehicle. It raises the engine revs and the idea behind this that on start up the oil needs to get around the oil galleries asap . You should always warm a diesel up ( any engine really ) before driving . If your engine has a turbo you ought to let it idle at the end of the journey for 1 minute. When working hard the turbo can spin at uo to 250k rpm ! If you turn it off and the turbo is still at high rpm it can accelerate wear due to the oil pump no longer pumping oil to the turbo bearings . If you treat these diesel engines carefully they can last 300k - 500k miles .
Diesels are a work horse not for performance .

The Pajero also had smaller variants, in Japan it was called the Pajero Mini and Pajero Junior. They were similar in size, though the difference between the two models is the Mini was a Kei-Car spec model with a 659cc Inline-4 (Naturally-Aspirated or Turbocharged) and the Junior has wider fenders and a Naturally-Aspirated 1.1L Inline-4 engine. This approach of mini SUVs was done in the present day with Suzuki's Jimny (JDM Kei-Spec) and Jimny Sierra (1.3L Global Spec).
Then there was also a small wheelbase 5-door SUV called the Pajero iO or Pinin (depending on region), with a 1.8 or 2.0L Inline-4.

The independent multilink suspension in the back and the A/B in the front used by the homolugation Pajero Evolution at it's Dakar overall win is for the period and price very comfortable off road. Mitsubishi I remember in the '90s didn't have a sub brand for luxury but they had a lot of cool cars, they were like Hyundai after a decade, respectable. Most of the vehicles and montero's they're hard to find a single to low amount of owners and their dealerships sell to just about anybody so the maintenance kind of goes with they get a lifestyle. I'm importing one I'm South America with 30,000 original miles

With my dad we have a Mitsubishi Montero, from 1991. It has a 2.6L 4L Cylinder carburated engine, and it has given us a very good time and great experiences.
Certainly is not a good car for city and traffic jams due to the fuel consumption, but for off-roading is still a great car, and it has allowed us to climb some rocky mountains and travel all around the country (I live in Colombia).
The 4WD is really useful for a ton of situations, as well as the Throttle knob, and well, it still works fine, even with more than 380 thousand kilometers on it.
Something that is unusual over here is the Diesel version of those kind of cars, almost every car on road runs on petrol.
    Thanks for the video :).

Honestly, I feel like the offroad community is sleeping on this car so much.
Pajero is a legend of Paris-Dakar and for the price, it's a superb choice not only for offroading but also for daily driving.
In Poland where I live, you can get a running Pajero for dirt cheap- I've seen a few for less than 5k PLN (some 2k USD) in ok condition- and they come in so many versions that there is one for pretty much everyone: Diesel and Petrol, 3 and 5 doors, Spartan and Luxurious, 100% Stock and Modded out the Ass.
The only reason I didn't buy Pajero yet is that we already have a 4x4 and there is no room for another one.

Super capable, impressive off-road capabilities and super cheap maintenance. Mine has 260,000 miles as of this comment and it still continues to kick butt on and off-road.
The sad thing is that the consumer market is now becoming more interested on them so prices are going up. Finding parts is a bit scarce, specially for the diesel versions but all and all it's a must have vehicle is you don't want to spend a tremendous amount of dough on any of its counterparts. Just don't get anything less than a V6 because they ARE SLOW.

Beautifull Montero, look's impressive and very clean. My son owned the same model ( SWB ), but with an 2.5 turbo diesel intercooler engine with automátic transmission, and I'm proud to be the owner of a 2.8 turbo diesel intercooler LWB gen. 2.5, now with 325k on the clock, and run's like new, love those asian 4wd icons.

Its a huge shame Mitsubishi is killing off the Pajero. I own a Gen 3 Pajero and love the vehicle, In Australia we didn't get the SWB in Gen 3 but did for Gen 1, 2 & 4. The Pajero is a very under rated 4x4 although it is just as capable as many of the more expensive ones such as the Landcruiser & Prado. Since Covid the price of all 4x4's are increasing here in Australia but the Pajero can still be picked up for a good price and its very possible to find one that has never been off road.

So here in Costa Rica 🇨🇷 you can find 2016 4th Gen Montero with that exact 4M40 diesel engine with a manual transmission but a long wheel base.
My brother have a 2008 4th gen Montero short wheelbase and its the high trim level. It uses the same engine, and 4WD technology... after the 3rd gen they are all Independent suspension front and back.

Ah a classic! The SUV that goes by different names in the World: Montero in the Americas and Spain, Shogun in the UK and Dodge Raider which I had the pleasure of driving in the 90s. Love these SUVs, feel like you are invading a small country driving them through dirt roads. The UN and tour operators use them and Land Rovers in the bush and wild country. Haven't seen them on the road in years. Excited to learn more about the car's history.

I have a 2002 Montero LTD that has 247k miles, been down more fire roads and 4x4 only Jeep roads than you can count, and been air born, flying 12’ like a bird and landing just fine many many dozens of times. It’s almost bulletproof, and I’d buy another one in a New York second... but they don’t sell these in the states anymore.
