- Training a horse to jump requires mastering ground jumps at a trot and a canter, gaining excellent control over the horse, and then moving to more advanced single fence jumps. Avoid skipping steps when training a horse to jump with tips from an equestrian team head coach in this video on horse training.
The only thing I didn't like on this video is that the first fence was a vertical. I understand that your horse can jump verticals and that your comfortable jumping them, but when you're training a horse that I had never jumped before it's nice to at least jump a small X if that. I've broken a few bones trying to train a horse that had been training for about a week and I put him on an X. Long story short, I broke my leg and arm in two different places. I would not recommend jumping verticals on your first time training the horse. I again do understand that you've probably trained a lot of horses and that that horse had probably jumped to the moon, but I just don't like how it was a vertical. I still love your videos and that I pointed out one little thing and it took me about an hour to write...
This horse already know how to jump.
Oml, we *KNOW.* They are using a trained horse for the video to represent it better. Geez.
excellent! this is how i trained my horse and now he is up to jumping 4ft! Of course the process takes days or even weeks, you cant do it all in one day. Shes just showing the process.
Gorgeous horse by the way!
You are such a beautiful rider, and you have such a beautiful horse. This was very helpful for me! I have an arab mare who is just learning to jump. Thank you for this!
Great video and love you channel, but I recommend to do all steps on the ground in a lunge. Then move into the saddle. This just insures that you won't get hurt if your horse spooks. I also recommend using an x jump instead of a vertical. I love the way you start small and work your way up. Nothing g against you.
Your horse moves so beautifully! Wish our riding academy had these kinds of horses lol (:
my quarter horse and i have used youtube as our teacher and have gotten to cantar w/ me on her, jump and follow me in the pasture! NEVER give up EVER guys cuz the feeling of accomplishment is the feeling as if your on top of the world.
may i just say your horse is gorgeous!!! im gonna train my horse when i get one lol x
thanks!!! my profile pic is actually my other horse he's a haflinger and his name is ringling but thanks for the nice comment!
I think she is doing it very well. As a horse trainer myself I understand that there are as many different ways to train a horse as there are trainers, so in the future if you plan on bad mouthing someone you should probably remember that you have never tried their method and it may very well be better than yours. Try stepping out of your comfort zone and be positive for once, the results might surprise you.
that horse is obviously trained to jump already
Ikr
Un known yes but she wants to show how to train a horse and how this worked for her
Ik I was expecting a horse who didn’t know 😂
Ya...
Not sure if I'd do a line of jumps for a first few weeks of jumping and I'd probably start off with cross rails but I agree with everything else. Well done.
Beautiful horse
You have a very beautiful horse!!! I ride a horse that looks like that in my lessons an hopefully I am going to be getting my own English horse and start jumping!!! I'm really excited!!!
I teach riding I saw the caption training the horse to jump!!! Look don't we teach horses to walk or canter and surprisingly how to jump!! the only thing we do is train the horse the signals ( the aids) and improve balance, obedience and confidence over fences that's it!!! you do this with flat work over poles and small jumps then building up to more higher and larger combinations. the horse does the jumping we just guide and control. I believe the title should be introducing a horse to a jump as horses know how to naturally!!! end of rant
this video helped me a lot! thank you! :D
Could not agree more, well said!
Beautiful horse!
Thanks a lot!
btw I luv ur horse and u helped me a lot thanks
This horse already knows how to jump... this is helpful... lol!
I totally agree!
your horse is so pretty!
I am learning to jump a horse and I love it sooooooooooo much🐎😄🐴🏇
Pine Field Stables same I'm training my palomino quarter horse to jump, she's not very good, but making lots of progress
Same my quarter/paint/saddlebred
Loves it even tho she isn't the best
Ok everyone whos saying shes doing it wrong check out her other videos this horse is top knoch and ive done this with my newly 3yr old broke and hes fine so knock it off
Does it matter what type of horse you jump or is there just perforations on what horse is better to jump because I am learning to jump just for fun not for competitions or anything like that and I dont have an Arabian or anything exotic like that
i need some help, me and my horse have been jumping for a while and she REFUSES literally will not and cannot jump a verticle, its like she doesnt see it but she jumps oxers and anything else you through at her,,.. any tips?
Pretty horse. And did good :). I'm teaching this thoroughbred mare that have never been ridden and she a rescued horse I think. But the owner of that horse says I'm the only one who can ride her, cause' if other get on her, there way to hard with them and there mouth.. But I am doing small steps with her over jumps.. She doing 1 foot inch vertical now and did really good. I have canter her before a lot.. But just afraid of what she do with the jumps in the canter. Should I do the canter anyways?
oh that is great to know.
gorgious!
Is it possible to jump a Tennessee Walking Horse? Is it good for them or not?
the horse is fantastic
Everyone is commenting about how she shouldn't be jumping a vertical already but obviously this horse already knows how to jump. She is just telling you what to do. I'm sure the way that horse was introduced to jumping was with cross rails
My horse puts his head really low... how should I get it up more?
Wouldn't you start with a raised ground pole or a lower corpse ail instead of a vertical?
My horse steps over a 2 foot wide tree trunk at a trot help
Great Video, except your horse isn't actually going to jump the jump the first time you try
You have a really pretty horse
I love the horse
Thanks for the info I'm starting an unbroken horse and need tips lol
Pretty horse
is it hard getting them to the first time round? I mean training over little jumps.
Not really they naturally know how to jump.
@earlrocks96
Thanks for the advice :). I tried it today.. But first canter over a ground pole.. Not went well, she just decided to run me at the get.. But luckily I stay on and got control of her. But then I walk her a lot to cool her of. Then started trot over cross-rails.. And then I ask her to canter over a really smallest cross-rail and she did excellent :). But am gonna take time with her on cross-rails.. Before I go any higher.
thank you so much now i know how to jump the horse if we go to baguio city horse riding
Frosty finally has the ground poles after a year of them and 3 years of dressage, and now we have slightly elevated jumps. She's not having any of it. She doesn't have the confidence. So, back on the lunge line jumping every second or third circle and letting her tell me no. She can do it, she's gone over much bigger fences (ok, like 8in taller) so she can do it. And she does it on the lunge just fine. She's protecting me, and being a little nervous about it. She'll get it soon.
lovely horse and rider...have to agree with AllieLover147 that I would love to see more horse training videos with green horses verses well schooled.
This horse already knows how to jump. And u don't start a horse jumping with a vertical. But helpful tips! :D
hey im new riding horses and i have fear.....is dificult jump?
what about jumping position
My horse spooks wen she goes into canter how can I stop this
I trained my own horse to jump hes 14.2 hands high and he jump 4 feet! I love him!we got 3rd at the reginal horse show But i had to quit jumping him because he kept jumping he pen fences lol
Your supposed to lunge them over the ground pole first but other than that thanks this helps a lot
Not really my pony never did that and is a great jumper
You don't have to if you ain't a pussy 😂
Im having trouble with a horse I ride and the problem is she used to love jumping but I'm doing everything right but every time I'm about to jump her I always get refusals and tmrw I have a show and I don't think we will win anything or have much fun since she will keep refusing I went to one yesterday didn't go very well and tmrw my Aunt will be there and it's going to be embarrassing
Anyone know any tips to help her jump?
dont pay attention to this video this horse and rider have had plenty of experience jumping. Everything you do with your horse starts on the ground, i'm currently teaching my horse to jump and she's progressing very well, but before you even think about getting on there backs and jumping you need to make sure your horse has enough confidence to do that jump and make sure the jump you are using your horse can clear it. now there are certain ways to get your horse to start jumping... lunge it around and put trotting poles or real jumps in the path there are trotting/cantering, then put a saddle on there back because thats whats gonna be on them when your riding, so get them used to wearing a saddle while jumping... then make sure you know how to jump, all the correct positions, cause if you dont you can get yourself and your horse seriously injured. Finally once you and your horse have enough confidence and know EXACTLY what to do then you can ride and take it easy at first don't over do it, because they could get jump shower or arthritus in there legs or even lame... so please be cautious when jumping it is extremely dangerous but then again alot of fun! I hope this comment was of use to anyone who reads this! :)
I am a kid and I know this is not how you train a horse to jump. Your horse should not jump bigger jumps like that the first time you jump it. It should be a tiny crossbar, and work your way up. I am training my horse to jump and she is improving by jumping at the same height untill she is jumping that perfectly. Then I move it up a little bit. I don't go higher "when I'm comfortable" I go higher when your horse is ready. If you jump a horse to high for the first time they will be sore.
and thanks I only read it until after I commented and that also hep my horse isn't even ride able yet she has only got her bridle in and she is well behave at that at the moment but um I want to know how to train a horse t do jumping etc as she will be my jumping competition horse
Yeah!
That horse is clearly a trained jumper tho
They won’t just be sore they won’t enjoy it because they are still learning and already your jumping that big I am a kid and I have a chestnut and white 16.2hh and she’s just been broke in and I have done pole work to tiny cross poles and she is enjoying it and when she’s comfortable not me her then I move bigger
I agree 100% but please don’t take it the wrong way. I just think you should add more ground work drills like lines of ground polls that will really help a green horse. Just try adjusting your steps a little. ❤️
How do you expect a young horse who is trying to learn to jump to canter it ,ive been training my tb now for a bit over a month and we have even tried to canter her over a jump as her balence it not right at all yet and she doesnt jump on to the right leg all the time ,i dont think its fair on horses who are unskilled and are busy beening trained to try to canter it if they have just starting to learn to jump just saying =P
hey i am a beggener rider and the first time i jumped was not on purpose now i jump all the time but me horse avoids the jump. i do not have a trainer so PLEASE help me thank you
umm.... what if your horse keeps refusing a ground pole at the walk???
Caelan Rairdan put the ground pole next to a fence line and walk/trot along the rail. It can also help if you have someone else there next to them so the horse is more inclined to go over
for sure...lots of smart people here, not sure why she did not realize all of this..she rides very pretty
that is one...gorgeous... hunter...wow.
her horse is very nice and very trained....she is talking about how to train a horse and I assume that horse would be green...so you would start off with cross rails.
@rafal ammro transitioning back and forth is actually very good for your horse, and definitely doesn't make your horse untrained. You want a horse with smooth transitions and the only way to do that is by practice
OMG!! my horse looks exactly the same as yours! what breed is your horse?
Some trainers believe that cross rails unfairly punish inexperienced horses for not being straight, and are more beneficial when it comes to teaching the rider to maintain straightness (on an experienced horse).
no I really ment that is good to know.
Your poor dog
@Emily Frost you should make a CZcams video about that because you seem to know your stuff
what if your horse is western and doesn't know how to jump?
Your horse is cute!
Yes Yes you should :)
I saw it too, at the very end.
I think the goal of the video SarahBlueberryLover, Molly Smith, Icweinstock she is telling you how to train your youngster or older horse to do so but to tell you how she used an older experienced horse
I was thinking the same thing....
the horse is in a loose ring snaffle and every trainer and vet ive ever met says dont put pressure on both reins u apply to one then the other. otherwise you get a nutcracker action. my horse was injured from someone doing that. im not trying bein rude but thats how i was taught aswell but i ride and jump in a pelham so i dont have to use a snaffle on my horse. ill give his lead changes are off tho
Dapple Grey. So cute :)
There is many things that cause refusing. fear of jump, maybe he/she is uncomfortable with teh height of teh jump, improper riding. not saying ur not riding right just lsitign what could be happening. id lunge your horse over teh jump and make sure your horse isnt over jumping and is comfortable and in teh correct frame i had a mare tha over jumped caused her some pain. also if you happen to be nervous about a jump your horse will most likely avoid it, and dont look at teh pole look over it
You should start with a cros or a caveletti
i didnt say she yanked, she sawed
Like if you got a horse
@sarahblueberrylover piece of advice, more people are going to respect your opinion if you sound like you know what your talking about and don't just crack up.. And you don't have to lunge them over jumps, my horse jumps just fine and I lunged her over jumps once or twice and she understood better what I was asking her when I was in the saddle because she understands my most language when I ask her to pick her feet up, but yes lunging over jumps first is great for SOME horses..
has the horse ever jumped before?
Is that an Irish Hunter!?I Have an Irish Hunter Named Ghost
I think she was just trying to half-halt him in between and he got a little annoyed. It's not *always* the riders fault. This horse was sort of in a sour mood. However, if her reins would have been shorter she could have been able to collect him more quickly.
Is this an American way of training? In the UK we would not do this! Firstly all of these things would be broken up over days or weeks not all within a few seconds. Secondly always we'd use a cross pole as the first jump with poles before to help with the strides. Straight poles wouldn't come in until the horse was confident jumping and balanced...
I'm trying to get my western horse to jump and ride english ;-;
btw my profile pic is my other horse ;)
I'm sorry but I don't understand why we need to know this.... :P
The horse seems like it already knows how to jump and the horse that I am working on does not know how to jump because me ha my trainer need to teach it but I have jumped cross rails and u can't go high like u did u need to do a ground pole and then cross rails and once the horse is good with the cross rail then go higher
Do you teach your horse this in one day!? That's fast...
It's not that easy. What if you can't even get the horse over the ground pole?
Heh, my mare balks at a 5 in pole. Probably my fault, and a mix of other things.
*CROSSRAIL
Heels down girl :)
barely.
That first jump seems a bit high for a first timer
Actually no it's not it just depends on how tall the horse is
Horse Lover Playz no it doesn't. Any horse can jump a small cross rail if they're trained tight
Horse Lover Playz *right
Maybe it's just me but that horse looks like it's off
This animal clearily has jumped before
clearly**
your horse is already trained and first you have to do trot pole and then make him jump this is a trot jump not a canter jump .wrong information .
First of all I'm a horse trainer. you never put a big jump like that . Start off as a tiny cross rail so that it can't go down any father only at trot then u move to the canter after a couple days
At 2:10 they are hurt the horse, look the bit and the hands for the stupid girl...
You should really ditch the dressage bridle. you are starting a whole new training problem. He gets crooked and swings his head out because of that bridle.
um, that horse looks like an expierienced jumper. Those are pretty big.
she didnt yank.
This seems awfully rushed. If it were me teaching a horse, the first lesson would consist of ground poles and MAYBE a small cross rail.
