I just put 92 ears on the road yesterday with the "Free" sign on it. 3 hours later, there were still 20-some ears left. I just try to make enough to cover my seed and fert expenses.
I tried to sell sweet corn this year and just could not move the corn this year nobody really needed it. Instead they would rather buy from out of state or out of country. It's a shame to cause I had a bumper crop too. Watermelons the same DAME way. I'm done with trucking produce. Cows cows cows is were I'm going. I'll probably grow field corn for feed but as far as me trying this again count me out I took a big loss. But hey good for you and your family man I'm glad somebody is doing good on sweet corn this year.
In wisconsin, corn always sells, and so does cream corn so we don't really have that issue fortunately. Melons sell if you have someone in the city to market them. We have a guy that comes with a big green school bus and fills it all the way up with watermelon and cantelope, pays cash and Im sure he makes a good living where he sells it.
@@kareemmurray1380 I'm not in Georgia that was the Family Farm name it is now changed names. Everybody assumes that it stands for Georgia Farms but that is not the case. I'm actually in Alabama. And I do not truck produce anymore. However if I could find someone to move produce I might be interested
Great vid love the history. I was there Sat, the corn this year is as good as it always is and seemed better picking. Your staff is consistently polite, fun and helpful. See you next year.
I really appreciate your answer to the question! I did a small sweet corn operation this year in Michigan and if all goes well in the next few weeks im going for 3 acres next season!
Hey I'm curious how much you're making per ear? I'm looking to start with 1/2acre, because I'm tired of how expensive everything is, I figured I would just sell to friends, neighbours, etc for a good discount off of grocery store prices
@@AshtrayAnnie I don't think there is any real profit at all honestly, Break even at best if you factor in how much labor is involved. This year with record inflation and fuel prices I'm not sure that I will even plant..FJB
@@dustinprice8897 Hmm, well I'm doing everything by hand, growing some other veggies as well. I see a lot of grocery store corn with husk already off going for about $1.50 a corn. I figure if I sell it at even $1, and then plant about 3000 stalks I could bundle it in with other veggies and make a decent profit while also bringing in some business by selling it at a discount and helping people out, by alleviating some of the stress of food prices
@@AshtrayAnnie I like your mindset on that for sure. I know sweetcorn seed is astronomical right now, I think a 1 pound bag of seed is around $1k right now. So just figure out all your input cost before you decide on a selling price
We start putting out sweet corn in March. People are itching to get out in the yard, get the grill going. It just takes some unseasonably warm sunny days. That requires planting corn in the winter and using both low tunnels and high tunnels, it’s a constant matter of planting in phases. It’s all about being 1st! Early and late season (we sell through thanksgiving) brings $2 per ear, but mid year, when everyone else is coming on strong, it’s $2/dozen. We sell the crates and bags, or people can bring their own.
I have been talking several farmers who grow fresh sweet corn. They have told me they get between 17,000 to 21,500 ears per acre. 150 bushel x 48 ears per bushel is 7200 ears. Do you know why your yeild is so much lower than other farmers? I am in Ohio and have been talking to farmers from New Hampshire to Indiana. You are the only southern farmer I know to talk to. What is you seed planting rate? Thank you
12.00 an acre and 15 acres so 15k on profit. Jeeze. Id need 100 acres to clear 100k. I'd have to farm and diversify my crops to do so. Makes me wonder what farmers are doing profiting 250k+. a year
Hi my name is Baco I used to live in Maryland for my study now I moved back to Africa but I still go to USA twice every year but I need corn for my business I do agro livestock in French *aliment bétail * I need thousands tonnes as matière première amd i wanna have direct farmer to buy from directly

Very honest assessment of growing corn. Knowing your numbers is so important. More people every day so price should improve.

Outstanding informative video !
You "laid it out" in terms everyone could understand.
"best case scenario"
"worst case scenario"
You nailed it !

Tomatoes cucumbers and squash make the most for us.
We’ve tossed around the idea of growing sweet corn and chopping it once it’s picked for our cattle.
Works out pretty good, our neighbor chops the field as soon as we call the season.
Lookup a radionics instrument for Ag
How do you lay your sweet corn by ? Looking for ideas. Thanks

About how many sellable ears do you usually get off of 1 stalks?
2 ears to the stalk always but 1 usually is all you'll get that is good enough to sell
