  • I recorded this video both to share with you and for my future reference showing how to gain maximum access to the battery in my Model A pickup by first removing the seat, the rubber floor mat, the small pad and plate that cover the battery access hole, and the floorboard.
Background: I had almost finished replacing the 6-volt battery in my Model A by myself when I realized that I had installed it backwards, with the positive terminal facing the front instead of the rear (See my previous video, "Replace the Battery in a 1931 Ford Model A Pickup.") Since my brother-in-law, Daryl was soon to arrive for a visit, I decided not to repeat removing the heavy battery by myself. Upon his arrival, as we analyzed the situation to come up with a plan for working in such tight space, it suddenly occurred to me that we would have much better access to the battery by first removing the seat and the floor mat. In less than 15 minutes time, Daryl and I removed the seat, the rubber floor mat, the small pad and plate that cover the battery access hole, and the floorboard. This provided maximum access to the battery. I then crawled beneath the truck and pushed up on the bottom of the battery while Daryl lifted it out of the carriage, rotated it 180 degrees, and then together, we lowered it gently back into the carriage. Another lesson learned.

This is the same battery location as my dad's 1931 four door town sedan. The sedan has an identical battery access 'cut out' in the same floorboard with the metal cover plate. Although ours was restored by a Model A club in the mid 90's, it is still 6 volt and has a generator. I've have an 8 volt battery in it for the past 9 or so years. Dad told me a story many years ago about how the engines, which were built at a different factory, where shipped to the assembly plant in 'quality material' wooden crates. This raised a few questions as Henry was always trying to keep costs down. Ol' Henry had a plan. After each engine was unpacked, the nice crate became the floors in the cars!

Just seen you do have the plate but it goes on top of the floor board not underneath it is held in place by those swivel toggles

You can at least make things a little easier in battery replacement by cutting the floor board in half and only removing the driver's side. There's instructions in a back issue of The Restorer on how to do that.
