- In an exclusive interview to ThePrint’s Karishma Hasnat, Kuki National Organisation (KNO) spokesperson Dr Seilen Haokip, explains how the demand for an Autonomous Territorial Council underwent a “paradigm shift” since the ethnic conflict broke out on 3 May, 2023. The KNO leadership along with other groups waiting for the Centre to resume talks on their current political demand - a Union Territory within the country, and under the Constitution. Dr Haokip clarifies on “violation of ground rules” by the Suspension of Operations (SoO) groups in the hills of Manipur.

Let's go back and ask why GoI signed an agreement with a hitherto unknown group with no history of any confrontation with the Indian Security Forces. Isn't that a strange and abnormal step by the GoI. Adding to the mystery is the fact that the agreement was informally signed between the Groups and the Indian Army in 2005 (3 years before the formal agreement), without keeping the government of Manipur in loop!

The violence wasn’t started in Imphal. It was started in Torbung, Kangvai area where the Peace rally with guns was on. Those people with guns started burning meitei houses and killing lots of meitei families. And now you are blaming Meitei. KNO were never a secessionist UG group (can't say about their long term vision of Zalengam) and never attacked central arm police force.
The only conflict they have were with State police and the innocent truck drivers from whom they collect illegal taxes.
This is a matter of Law & Order, and a State subject. Why were the State Government excluded and not kept in the loop while signing an agreement between Central Govt and these suit boot wearing rich tribals ?
