  • This four-part jig is a classic Irish traditional jig and session tune. I learned it as a child playing sessions with my dad at J. Patrick's Pub in Baltimore.
Dublin uileann piper, collector, and researcher Séamus Ennis (1919-1982) claimed that "Lark in the Morning" was derived from a similar five-part jig called "The Lark's March." You can hear Ennis play "The Lark's March" on his recording "Forty Years of Irish Piping."
At the beginning of the track, Ennis tells the story of the tune's beginnings. Apparently there was a competition between two pipers. The winning piper apparently drew his inspiration from the call of the lark he heard overhead.
I sourced the notes on this tune from: The Traditional Tune Archive contributors, "Annotation:Lark in the Morning (1)," The Traditional Tune Archive, , tunearch.org/w... (accessed July 7, 2024).

Nice playing. What kind of whistle is that?
