- So, someone want to tell me how Kass plays the accordion with giant Rito bird feather fingers? I have regular human-sized fingers, and it's already hard enough!

When I started this channel back in 2012, accordion was probably one of the least likely instruments that I thought I'd want to learn... and yet, here we are. I played Breath of the Wild in the summer of 2017 when it came out, and like many others, took a liking to Kass' character. I love characters in games that are really musical (K.K. Slider from Animal Crossing, Ursula from Xenoblade 2, Big Band from Skullgirls), and Kass is another one of them! It's so nice to stumble upon the comforting sound of his accordion while exploring the wide-open Kingdom of Hyrule.
I knew that I would't be able to do an arrangement of this theme quite enough justice without including a bit of accordion in the arrangement, so I took it upon myself to learn Kass' theme on the accordion. In retrospect, it was actually a really great tune to use for learning! The accordion has the right hand chromatic keyboard side, which I was already familiar with due to my experience with piano, but the left hand button side was a daunting task, since I've never played any instrument that had a system like that. If you're not familiar with accordion bass buttons, this one is the 72 Stradella bass system. It has 12 rows of 6 buttons each, which each row being its own key (organized by the circle of fifths, which is really handy), and each button playing a different note or chord within that key. Kass' Theme is very cyclical as far its harmony goes, so often, I'm just moving down a row each time the chord changes. The accordion wasn't exactly made to handle complex jazz chords with lots of tensions, so it was fun figuring out roundabout ways to get the accordion to play some simple jazz chords (for example, playing Bmi7b5 with the B bass button, and the D minor chord button!)
I don't recall where exactly, but I know I've heard some jazz recordings with clarinet and accordion playing together. I decided to use this ensemble (plus piano, upright bass, and drums) for this arrangement to give it a really natural and airy feel! I've always thought that woodwinds sounded like birds, and clarinet is a good instrumental personification of Kass in my mind... apart from his obvious accordion skills, haha. Kass' theme is originally in 3/4, but I stretched it out to 4/4 for this arrangement to be able to give it a kind of a tango vibe! I've been really digging recordings of Piazolla's "Libertango" lately (especially the Hiromi, Gary Buron, and Yo-Yo Ma versions), which inspired this particular arrangement. The opening section is completely rubato (meaning there's no click track or metronome), so it was a challenge to get all the instruments playing together how I wanted them to. I soon figured out that the thing that was missing was a conductor, so I filmed myself conducting how I wanted the intro to go, and used that video as a reference for all the other parts in the intro! I miss conducting for ensembles, and this is probably the closest I'm going to get to that for a while at least, haha! Hope you enjoy the other little Zelda references I threw in towards the end! Normally I don't try and shoehorn a ton of references to other songs in my arrangement, but I figured these were especially appropriate, since Breath of the Wild uses piano for a lot of its sound effects and stingers!

Accordion to CZcams’s statistics, only a small percent of viewers aren’t vibing.
Now THAT sounds like something I could put in as a call to action....
Not vibing to this? Impossible.
i hope someone got that you wrote accordion
@@dsasda9728 OMG i literally had to do a double take there haha, not sure how i missed that so easily
I think you were bassicsally making a pun.
Kass' character in BOTW is pretty damn good, so he DESERVES a whole 7 minute long arrangement of his theme
Really hoping that he's just as great of a character in BOTW 2
6 minutes and 59 seconds*
I hope his teacher becomes relevant and isn't just a nameless bard that apparently knew every secret in Hyrule
Leaving a comment here in hopes of news tomorrow for botw 2 🤞
too bad we haven’t got that, and instead 6mins 59secs
Why are you everywhere
I can just imagine a Jazz Rito band playing with Kass in this XD
Holy crap someone has to animate that
Kinda hard to blow woodwinds with a beak. 😜
A bird version of the indigo-gos
For real I got such a vivid scene in my head. Link and Zelda visiting Zora's domain to see Sidon, and during dinner or something the band starts up and everyone starts dancing. Link trying so hard to remember basic steps Impa taught him a hundred years ago. Ugh, I need to get into animation.

Learning accordion just for a video shows how much dedication is in your music :0
He recorded himself conducting parts of this Arrangement even if there is absolutely no point other than rather small (visual only) parts of this video. THAT is some serious dedication.
Madlad out here conducting HIMSELF
All of it is incredibly impressive but man that smooth clarinet was godly. Also really awesome accordion improv!
Thanks! A lot of skill transfers over from saxophone, since they both are single receded instruments that use similar fingering systems!
@@insaneintherainmusic in my class at school I was they only one who started with a child-sized soprano sax (which looked more like a shrunk down alto in form factor). Everyone else who was going to move to sax started on clarinet, and one girl on the flute. Our music teacher used the oboe. So we all got a good taste of how cross-applicable it all is!
Learning accordion solely for this video? Absolute madlad, as usual
It was pretty hard haha, but after a few practice sessions, I could get this song down decently!
This gives me major late night talk show vibes, like it sounds like something that would play on a live TV Show from Rito Village .
“Welcome back to the Late Night Show with Kaneli! Coming to you live from Rito Village, we bring you many celebrities from across the land of Hyrule, and tonight, our musical accompaniment features today’s musical guests, Kass and the Bards!”

I love the amount of emotion you can see Carlos put into his performance throughout this video, you can tell how much he enjoyed making this
This arrangement was also uploaded right before Valentine's Day, which just makes it even more perfect
Oh my god, a Christopher Moon comment with no replies and 10 likes.
Playing the button side of the accordion is so difficult, so major props for learning it so quickly!
It is SO different from anything I’ve ever played, but it’s a really interesting and useful system!
My favorite part about jazz is the face of smelling something absolutely nasty that the musicians have when just BUSSIN a hard solo. That same face gets put on the audience. It's just such an emotional experience
Gonna have to rate this one 18+ for Carlos' face during the accordion solo
lmfao
Did my mans just jazzify an accordion song? Cuz I think my mans just jazzified an accordion song. And I loved every second of it

Yes... there was no way I would cover this song without playing accordion!
and then professor Layton came along

insaneintherain for his viewers: *learns the accordion*
Never knew how much I needed jazz accordion in my life
This is my favorite song ingame not only because of how good it is and how it seamlessly transitions to the main theme but also because of the big Lore revelation it gives us, if you know you know
"What instrument do you play?"
*yes*
I guess he plays the Orchestra
I have listened to many Zelda songs and remixes in my time. Dozens, hundreds even. Never before have I heard somebody sneak in the chest opening and secret found jingles! That is insanely clever. It references the many short piano flourishes (is that the right word?) that play throughout BOTW, as well as paying tribute to the series as a whole, which itself goes full circle because that's what the original Kass's theme did. Incredible.
This would make a perfect addition to my work-from-home playlist...or the imagine-I'm-in-a-café playlist. Classy AF.
Learning the accordion just for this? You're dedicated...
literally every time something new came in there was a “hell yeah” moment
Props for learning the accordion for this, and the clarinet also meshes into this song really well
There’s nothing better than being able to see a musician really feel a piece, especially with jazz. It really gives a life to a piece!
4:38 bruh he's playing these high notes so seamlessly while i struggle to even make a sound
The cleanness of that gliss on the clarinet was just unfair
Kass's melody, once more, guides me to a beautiful place
CRIMINALLY underrated artist. Aspire to be like you my man
Been hoping you'd cover this one- absolutely gorgeous, feel like I'm on a Parisian street corner at night listening, absolute perfection!
Your neck in this is a truly TOP tier performance. I couldn't help but get hyped in every shot of your neck popping off.
I've been learning the accordeon lately and it's such a relief to see that even insane in the rain keeps the base buttons as a suggestion
Amazing cover, as always! This song just hits different because it's often the one thing to break silence while exploring.
The best birthday present I could ask for
@Fiona the sheep thanks!
Kass is my absolute favorite thing out of Zelda tbh. Just occasionally hearing his song start playing in the distance while exploring just gives a sense of comfort.
The bass part of this is so fun to play, it's just a walk down the entire bass board, I really liked seeing you make the attempt on the bass parts where you could, it can be a little tricky to get used to but being able to play entire chords with one button is the reason I love the instrument so much
So this is how Kass looks like without his feathers...
He do be lookin nice and jazzy tho 👀
Nakie Kass o.o
Great cover! Love the recent inclusion of the clarinet in your arrangements
I’ve really been loving playing the clarinet :)
That nod of approval after the bass solo...I love it
Oh good lord, I was already sold on it after the first second and then the little “item get” buildup in the piano at the end!! It’s all just so *chef’s kiss*
Well this definitely made my day :)

@@BJGvideos You assume rightly ;)

I wouldn’t say it’s my central goal, but it’s a fun project to tackle alongside making these videos!
The Legend of Kass: Breath of The Accordion.

I would have never thought to put Kass's theme in a Bossa, but it works SO WELL.
This cover icks Kass
"I learned accordion JUST for this video" is definitely the mood
Accordion + Clarinet is such perfect combo
That was ridiculously good. We do love low, warm clarinet pitches
Little did I know in my teenage days downloading midi remixes of videogame music, that it would reach these heights in my lifetime.
The fact that there is a "Litterally just slapping the bass" section brings joy to my life
My student didn't come at my lesson for some reason. I'm just sitting here searching a meaning for my life. *sad accordion noise* the intro was just the perfect mood for this moment 😂
Thank you for your wonderful music.
Literally just learning the accordion for this cover!!! Is there any musical instrument Charlie CANNOT play???? You are quite the mad lad my dude! Much respect!
Okay, I genuinely adore you conducting “yourselves” in the video. It adds so much charm.
still listening to this improvement on an established piece even now and I'm tearing up cus the world hates artists and artists hate their own art.
"I learned accordian JUST for this video" You absolute legend.
my ears thank you oh my god this scratched a certain part in my brain and it feels so good--
"I don't recall where exactly, but I know I've heard some jazz recordings with clarinet and accordion playing together."
Buddy DeFranco and Tommy Gumina created some really good stuff with this combination of instruments. And in general I think accordion can be very interesting in jazz: Frank Marocco, Richard Galliano or more recently Taca Shimizu have brought something quite unique with their instrument in this genre
It's things like this thake make me wish either my accordion or clarinet were in 100% good working order with no little issues. Phenomenal Arrangement, definitely going into my playlist of things that slap
wow, just wow
I think Carlos was reading my mind.
I thought a few days ago while playing BOTW DLC: “How cool would it be if Insaneintherain made a arrangement of Kass’s theme?”
...now this is great.
Shout out to you for literally making the pain in our lives less severe
Kass is my favorite Rito in Breath of The Wild. And I'm happy you learned to play the accordion just so then you could play the songs he did. You have my Subscription.
the accordian skill kinda feel basic but the fact that you managed to write to fit your own skill level AND pull off amazing improv to fit the theme is what makes you a legend
*AND* it sounds fucking great

InsaneInTheRain never fails to amaze me.
that added touch of the 'opening a chest' sound effect was so smooth
Hahahaha that ending piano theme like when Link unlocks a part of the map or gets a new rune, that was a nice touch!
It is nice to see the instrument I play get some representation. Also you asked how Kass plays with big ol' feathers I can actually tell you because the "Creating A Champion" art book points out that "Keys would be hard to press so I changed them all to buttons".
I loved how you acted in the video at the start. It was as if you were virtually conducting a band of Carlos'
I actually was conducting haha! I filmed that video first, and then watched it as I was recording all the subsequent parts!
WOW! What a lovely and exciting introduction of the accordion and the grand piano, plus the acoustic drums really brought everything together. Not to mention the accordion and clarinet SOUND SO GOOD TOGETHER! This was a joy to watch and listen to :)
