It's the busiest time of the year. I'm working on like 18 different things. So, I’m gonna rank the gestures, you’re completely fine with that, and we can all collectively tell the schedule for this month to go dive under a falling tree.

A quick note:
I make a case toward the end of Reverential Bow that its presence brings into question why other "better" gestures ended up being changed in some way instead of keeping them the same, and then I listed Deep Respect (Bloodborne) as an example. Deep Respect is a covenant-related gesture, and so it makes a lot of sense that it wouldn't carry over to other games, or at least not without being modified. I make this point in the very next entry, but I didn't realize until now that I hadn't re-worded the section towards the end of Reverential Bow to reflect that. Oops.

Last on the list is going to be the grace right after the boss fight with Margit. Like, finish the fight, activate the grace, walk up the hill, another grace. Why? Did they just not have confidence that people would know what graces were or how to activate them? They actually have several stuck in your way along the route into Godrick’s castle.
Meanwhile, the graces of Castle Morne are placed incredibly badly, such that each grace is way at the beginning of every area and can’t link up with other routes, just locks you out of exploring that bit of the castle and forces you onto the next bit. You wanted to have a grace because you’re farming the misbegotten bow? Time to ride the elevator. You went the side way to get the claymore and then got decked by multiple misbegotten? Ride the elevator. You see a grace on one side of a tiny wall barely tall enough to need to jump over. CAN’T JUMP BACK! Ride the fucking elevator again if you missed something.
"What Do You Want?" is one of my favorites simply because me and my friends have practiced using it to lean on each other right after beating a particularly toxic invader.

Regular Bow lets you keep your weapon equipped, making it look much better if you are holding something like a sword and bow at the start of a duel
Regular bow is the perfect gesture for a vanilla sword and board knight, until you get by my sword anyway. Holding the shield and sword at attention is too strong.
One of the best messages i found in game was in front of Ensha doing that pose. It said "Beware edge, Lord" and for some reason it always makes me laugh

Gestures like waving and the finger slap have a special utility: they have sound.
So if you are being invaded and the dumbass passed by you like 4 times completely lost, you can call his attention with a "hey!"
I like to use "point up" as an antithesis of "point down" during PvP. When I defeat someone and the see the startup animation, the subconsciously prepare for salt to instead receive an uplifting message.
"Now to heaven with thee, brave warrior." *points up*

Erudition should get a little bit more love, if only for the fact that it's also the only gesture in the game that has actual interaction with your armor. When wearing one of the glintstone crowns, Erudition will make the gems on the crown light up.

Warm welcome is the most sarcastic gesture in the game. it was called "well, what is it?" in DS3. It was the Giant Dad BM gesture in DS1
It is a little different from the OG Dark Souls one and imo doesn't carry the same amount of swagger and disdain, but yeah
Its like a weird middle ground between "well, what is it?" and "welcome!" and isnt as good as either of them
None of the vaguely similar gestures come even close to matching Well What Is It. The DLC needs to bring that gesture back
Casual Greeting is underrated, its quick and to the point and doesn’t lock you in for long without needing to roll out of it.

Rock paper scissors is good in concept but it would be a bit tricky to time lol

I recently found out that if you used a gesture in front of Patches in his second "boss fight" (in his cave after his quest), he will recognize you and stop attacking.
You dont have to emote for him to do it

I just stand there and let him hit me until he realizes his mistake and apologizes
@@akechigoro3340 True, but he usually lands a couple of hits before that. If you use the gesture right after his HP bar appears, he won't do more than one move, usually the spray thing.
Point Up is VERY useful when you go to Ranni’s Rise and see ghost Iji. Saved my whole playthrough tbh

Every playthrough I use "point upwards" under Iji's ghost during the Ranni quest, usually with the message "something something dung"
That idea with the Wait Gesture is a really good idea. They should code that into the game with the next patch. It would also be cool if Calm Down had some sort of mechanic to reduce aggro.
Inner and outer order also get a bonus because you can mimic the fusion dance in coop. :)

Rusty mentioning his sorceries mod made me think about the possibility of him ranking all of the sorceries in said mod and now im very unreasonably hoping for him to do so
Out of all placements of all things in Rusty's videos the one that triggered me the most was having "point upwards" in the last place here. The fact that it's hard to find points of interest immediately upwards in this game is what makes it such an essential gesture for when it happens. To this day it was the only gesture I've ever used to add to actual helpful directions in a message.

I once saw a clip of some cooperators demolishing an invader and then doing a perfectly synchronized What Do You Want back to back.
There is value in default gestures like "Bow" and "Rest" in that you get the basic version immediately, but as you come to explore the game and define your character you can settle on a version that speaks to you more.

i find the Grovel for Mercy gesture is fitting for when i die foolishly as a co-op host: when respawning and summoning someone back who just witnessed my failure, i greet them with this. to say like "please don't hate me I'm sorry"

Rusty I don’t know if you’ll see this but I genuinely want to thank you. As someone who has had access to the internet and games since the age of 6 I can say I’ve spent a lot of it prob watching you whether it be on your channel or some channel you worked for. I remember finding your channel in high school thinking your voice sounded familiar and wandering where I’ve heard it before and just ignoring it as I went through playing hollow knight, Bloodborne, and Elden ring just generally having a good time. I’m an adult now and while it’s still hard to make time to watch videos with work and everything I still like too Stay up later then I should to watch the next Rusty or Comicstorian video (random shoutout aside you all are the only 2 I really watch-) I’m really happy I got to appreciate you as a creator throughout my childhood, and I’m happy I get to appreciate you now. Thank you for making content

On a serious note, shame that the emotes didn’t cause certain characters to reply back. I quite enjoyed showing off all my emotes to the Firekeeper and seeing what she would do. Wish we could’ve had more stuff like that in Elden Ring.

Also, bow is my favorite bow specifically because of it's lack of dignity. It fits with a lot of aesthetics better than the others. But, it doesn't look particularly undignified, so it coupd work with more regal aesthetics.

Balled up is great bc it also flexes to the environment, meaning you fall off walls and can do it on steps / stairs. Perfect for morning big doggo

Out the gate I've got beef with 'point upward' being ranked at the bottom. Like, yeah, why would you ever do this normally? But as an attachment to a message it can be useful to point out "Hey, you need to get up there" or "That place is what I'm talking about". Granted the number of places I'd use it are relatively few, but using it to point out "Hey, jump up to that spot to get to Gransax's Bolt" or "There's a balcony you can get to if you ride the guillotine here" is still more useful than "Oh, grace, please don't kill me (or make me kill you), Patches"
The “my thanks” gesture was in DKS2, but I it was called something different? It was my favorite, I had a really barbaric looking unarmed build (If I recall the fashion was the helm of Vengarl, lion warrior chest, probably the crit gloves, and the executioner chariot legs, with a ring slot dedicated to the aggro ring so the helm had fire coming out of the eyes) and It was the gesture I’d always use after winning an invasion.
At least I have fire spur me, I fuckin’ love that one. The perfect cap off to a boss fight if you’re running a rugged warrior type. When a host does particularly well in a fight, I like to run right up to them and do it, let them know big bro thought they did good.
It was called War Cry back in DS2, which actually made sense for what the gesture has you doing. Dunno why 3 decided to fuck that up other than they fucked up a lot of the small amount of content that made it out of 2, but oh well.

15:26 This one’s originally from the crestfallen warrior in DS2 and man, they did it dirty. Back then it used to be so expressive and smarmy that you could use it for BM’ing after defeating another player.
