One time when I was way young, like 5 years old. I accidentally stuck my thumb in the side of an escalator rail at Publix. It got all bloody, thankfully didn't take the skin, but ever since then I don't hold the escalator rail with my thumb.
I think the main problem is when they don't. There seems to be far less trouble when Grandma is riding the escalator somewhat inverted than when she and others try to rescue her from the inversion. Relax--be a bit upside down for awhile--and it will probably turn out better up top.
