    I've worked on a variety of leather accessories over the past few years, but this has quickly become one of my favorite pieces. Depending on who you talk to this bag has a variety of names, from a hippie pouch, biker pouch, waist bag, or my favorite, "the medicine bag." Bags such as these are a popular accessory with bikers and serves as a stylish and useful place to store a wallet and cellphone (iphone...) for comfort and safe keeping while on the road.
    There is a considerable amount of work involved in building a bag like this, making it well worth it's weight in gold. Everything on the bag is completely done by hand without the aid of any machinery. The centerpiece is either made of vegetable tanned leather that was dampened and stamped with a texturing tool then dyed black and finished, or exotic alligator skin. The back closes securely with a leather strap that loops around the decorated concho at the centerpiece. For the sides of the bag I dampened and folded the leather so that the pouch can expand or shrink depending on it's load. I added the tassels for extra aesthetics.
    In this video learn how to craft a designer leather hip bag or also called, "The medicine bag." Instructions and patterns for this project can be downloaded at www.fischerworkshops.com
    This bag can also be purchased at Fischer Workshops. See our website for prices and availability. Enjoy!!! handmade

      Quick question. The main body when resized on adobe illustrator is smaller than the "Front of Pocket" and "Rear Cover to Front" by 3mm to 1 side and 3mm to the lenght. Is there a reason for it, or must I rather use the main body as my template.
      PS: I have resized all templates according to the measurements given.

      I pre marked where I needed to roughen the leather. The video doesn't fully illustrate that... The area I roughened was also smaller than the diameter of the belt I was going to attach, so that it would be well hidden once stitched on.

    Hi I have just completed my first build of the medicine bag. I have been doing leatherwork for about a year and this was the most challenging project I have attempted to date. Everyone who has seen it so far has commented on how good the design is, so well done for that. The only problem I had was in shaping the gusset. It has meant I have ended up with the back pocket going on at a slight angle when the bag I'd open although it has not affected the appearance when closed. I have decided to make a jig to wet form the gusset on my next build and I will let you know how I get on with that. Thanks for a very easy to follow video and an excellent pattern. Kind Regards Mike

    • @FischerWorkshopsTaiwan
      @FischerWorkshopsTaiwan  Před 7 lety

      A folding jig might work, I've never tried. Since the gusset is so long I'd be curious how that works out. Thanks for sharing and I'm glad you enjoyed the design!

    • @popscratchie3985
      @popscratchie3985 Před 2 lety

      I had exactly the same problem, the gusset is an absolute nightmare I could not manage to get it to lay flat without huge creases. I think if I attempt this bag again I will try with a softer more stretchy leather like chrome tanned on the gusset.

    Nice job young man, your attention to detail is evident and your explanations are very well done. My only question to you is why you don't oil your leather and then seal everything? I've been working leather for about 50 years now and I've noticed more and more young leather workers like yourself doing excellent work but I'm just not seeing many oil there finished leather before sealing it. Would you please respond to this question as maby there is something I've missed or over looked after all. Thank you and again, very nice job.

  • @NGinuity
    @NGinuity Před 5 lety

    Great quality! It's a absolutely gorgeous piece. One question: At 16:35 I noticed that you chose to put your snap eyelets between the layers you glued. I know that's for visual reasons (even though you'd never see it when worn). Would you be worried that it won't be serviceable when the stud wears out? I replace them on holster thumb breaks all the time that are only a few years old because the socket just erodes them away from repeated use and they get loose and sloppy.

    Thank you for Sharing your knowledge ...( ;

    ps what are the sizes from the medicine bag pattern?

    • @FischerWorkshopsTaiwan
      @FischerWorkshopsTaiwan  Před 7 lety

      I apply the cutout behind the back to push the decorative centerpiece
      slightly out. It's not necessary, but it adds more dimension and beauty
      to the final outcome. Although I guess it depends on what type of
      leather you end up making the bag with. If the leather for the
      centerpiece is too hard it may not matter. The bags dimensions can be

    • @FischerWorkshopsTaiwan
      @FischerWorkshopsTaiwan  Před 8 lety

      I believe Tandy sells them, but if I'm mistaken, I purchased mine from Ivan's leathercraft in Taiwan. Theirs comes in several sizes and has a diamond shape to them that is similar to the stitching chisels I use. They ship worldwide, but might be pricey for the shipping? Have you looked on Ebay, or ETSY? goodsjapan.com is also a great place to find quality stitching chisel pliers if you don't mind spending $50-60 a pair. I recommend 1st buying a single hole nipper or chisel plier. The nipper works great, but is made of a cheaper material and can damage easily if to much force is applied. You can see what I'm referring to at the following link: www.ivan.tw/index.php?route=product/product&cid=25&page=2
      Hope this helps! Thanks!

  • @DraccoKnightblade

    Curious, was it more of a design choice for function/form to go with a leather tie down rather than a concho-snap for a closure? I've seen a few of these bags before and they were all snap closures or toggles. This is definitely a neat way to go about it though. Nicely done.

    • @FischerWorkshopsTaiwan
      @FischerWorkshopsTaiwan  Před 7 lety +1

      DraccoKnightblade Design and function. I think the leather strap is more aesthetically nicer, secure, and easy to open and close. A button would also require some force to close putting pressure on the contents of the bag.

    I must admit I watch these videos as a form of entretainment more than as a tutorial. Still I'm curious as to why some ocassions he uses the chisel for punching some stitch holes and some other ocassions he uses the pliers. Or if there's something to the order inwich he applies the shinny coat to certain pieceses intead of doing it all at the same time.

    What do you use as finishing coat your products always have the perfect sheen or gloss

      Hi Neil, I use a glossy sheen and apply it in thin coats. About 5 coats altogether. I like to use Craft Japan, but Eco flo works too.

    nice product!!! at 6:15 when you mold and use rubber cement.. does that hold well when the leather is wet? i could never get it to stay in place.. any tips.. (i use weldwood btw)

      Try only dampening the area you need to bend. You can also apply the cement to the leather before wetting it to see if it will hold better. This works well with the product I'm using now...

      so you dampen, then wet.. then mold.... .. when i wet then apply glue, it stays but not enough to hold in place.. it moves a little defeating the purpose of gluing
