Ryanair Pilot Nails Scary Landing

  • This is an incredible landing caught on tape that a Ryanair pilot made flying into Madeira Airport, aka Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport, in Portugal. The airport already has a reputation for being one of the most challenging airports in the world, and uncomfortable-looking landings are quite normal. On this particular day, the pilot had to battle high crosswinds as they approached. Inside Edition Digital has more.

Pilot (small planes) here. Yes, crabbing is a standard technique for handling crosswinds on final approach to landing. Then right before touchdown, you straighten the plane to align with the runway (and, for smaller planes, lower the upwind wing). It's definitely a "learned" technique, which I needed to learn because I flew out of an airport with frequent strong crosswinds.

That happens every single day. That landing was perfect! When they have a high cross wind they kind of hover over the runway and approach it in a "crab-like" manner and then at the last second right before touchdown the pilot "kicks" the rudder to straighten the plane and it goes from a 'crabbing' motion to straight down the runway! This takes a lot of training and a lot of skill! But it is not an uncommon landing by any means and probably happens hundreds of times a day around the world.
