    The device played by Mike Love (beard) is an electro-theremin, a device intended to reproduce the sound of a theremin but make it more controllable by direct touch rather than hand movements. 👍

    • @wolfgangwolf6060
      @wolfgangwolf6060 Před 3 měsíci

      I have read so many comments that the device was a theremin. I knew that was wrong because the player was touching it. a couple of days ago I decided to research this. Besides electro-theremin the device can be referred to as a "tannerin" - named after the inventor.

    One of The Beach Boys' many, many masterpieces. The production, harmonies, and soundscapes are just so rich and complex. Completely paved the way for decades of later pop music. Pet Sounds is often in the conversation for the greatest album of the rock era. Wouldn't It Be Nice and God Only Knows are two of the most beautiful, most perfect songs ever written. This particular song was released on the album after Pet Sounds that Brian Wilson had intended to be his magnum opus that was never finished as intended (the released album Smiley Smile was initially a flop, but has since become an influential critical and cult favorite). Still, this song stands as a testament to what could've been.

    At Brian Wilson's Kennedy Center Honors tribute, Art Garfunkel introduced the segment saying that when he first herd this song, he called Paul Simon to say he had just heard the best rock and roll song ever written. Arguably it is, it contains so many aspects of not only rock and roll, but blues, jazz and of course unique harmony in choir and single vocal realms.

    Technically they used an Electronic Theremin, which is not a pure Theremin because (as you can see) they touch it. No physical contact is actually made with the instrument when playing a pure Theremin.
    As for singing like a Theremin, people think the theme for the Original StarTrek was done on a Theremin, but it was actually an opera soprano named Loulie Jean Norman who sang 'the Theremin' part. In some later episodes they cut her part to save royalties payments but later restored her voice to the theme.

    The film "Love and Mercy" from 2014 is a biographical docudrama that focuses on Brian Wilson's mental illness and genius. Recommend.

    I have always loved the choice the producer (Jim Steinman) did at 5:22 on the 6:45 version of Bonnie Tylers Faster than the speed of night but I have unfortunately never heard any other rock songs feature a voice like that. Hearing Maggie singing like a theremin makes me hope that there might be other amazing songs with vocals like that. Anyone heard Faster than the speed of night who knows of some other songs like that?

    Brian Wilson is a musical genius and Good Vibrations was 20 years ahead of its time.

    Thanks for the expert analysis, Theremin-Maggie! Bur, where did you get the still photo of "Good Vibrations The Beach Boys" with 5 guys - none of whom are members of the Beach Boys???

    Trekkie time the theremin was used to create the music for the orginial star trek tv series. it is the instrument of the nerd army. live long and prosper!

    And it was the Wilson brothers mom and dogs that gave Brian Wilson the idea for writing this song

    I think they're performing here to the studio version, which featured top session musicians like Carol Kaye on bass and Hal Blaine on drums. Mike Love certainly didn't play the theremin.

    Your voice is impressive beautiful.
    When Paul Mcartney sp? heard this song he said it was the best song he had ever heard. I saw him say it on a documentary about Brian Wilson.

    I just read Brian Wilson's wiki page. What a crazy ( no pun intended) life he's had.

    If you only knew how many of us sung and still sing the Theremin Parr every time we hear this song. I knew you would before you did. Lol!
