KURDISH DANCES on an ANCIENT BRIDGE in TURKISH KURDISTAN

  • Diyarbakir was one of the places we were most looking forward to seeing in Turkey. It is one of the most interesting cities in the east and is the heart of the Kurdish people in the country.
    In the city we stayed with a friend's family and each day we were treated to a great breakfast.
    Diyarbakir has thousands of years of history and is said to have hosted 33 civilizations: Assyrians, Persians, Romans, Seljuks, among many others. It has a privileged location, connecting Asia with Anatolia through Mesopotamia and with abundant reserves of drinking water. Its population of more than 1.5 million inhabitants is mostly ethnic Kurdish.
    Our guides in the city were our friends Yavuz and Şevin. They have been living in Diyarbakir for many years and made sure we got to know the best places and tasted the tastiest food in the city. And of course, as local hospitality dictates, they didn't let us pay for anything!
    The architecture of the city is characterized by buildings built with basalt stone, obtained in the region. The facades are very striking, many with designs inspired by plants and animals. A curiosity of Diyarbakir is the minaret of the four legs where the legend says that if you pass 7 times between the 4 columns you will have all your wishes granted.
    This city has the second longest wall in the world still standing, with more than 7000 years of history. Between the wall and the Tigris River are the Hevsel Gardens, used as an agricultural area thousands of years ago. Both these and the wall are protected heritage by UNESCO.
    Something very attractive about Diyarbakir is that you can hear a lot of street music. It is even common to find community halay dances on the Ongözlü Bridge, an emblematic place in the city. Diyarbakir is home to several caravanserais (or caravanserai, in English), where travelers and their animals could spend the night and guard their goods along the Silk Road.     Nunca había visto alguno de tus videos pero estoy muy feliz de que me hayan salido hablando sobre los kurdos y más de Diyarbakır ya que de ahí es mi esposo gracias por mostrar mejor esta ciudad 😊 yo también estoy tratando de hacer video sobre los kurdos saludos!
