Ford F-150 Raptor and Ram Power Wagon - 2019 Off-Road Truck Review

- If you have around $60,000 to spend on a large off-road pickup truck, you're going to end up thinking Ford F-150 Raptor vs. Ram Power Wagon. These are the two most off-road-capable trucks from their respective brands, but they go about their business in two very different ways. This video shows the differences and similarities, and it explains the purpose of each truck.
Born for high speeds through loose terrain and high-flying antics, the 2019 Ford Raptor is like an off-road sports car. Its Stadium Super Truck-like stance provides tons of clearance, while the powerful twin-turbo V6 kicks out satisfying acceleration. The width can become a problem when driving the Raptor off-road. It's substantially wider than the Power Wagon, so you have to plan your routes carefully through narrow trails.
Though the Ram Power Wagon is not as adept at high speeds, driving it off-road reveals that its other attributes make up for that deficit. It rides taller and gains articulation through a disconnecting front sway bar. Locking front and rear differentials offer more control, while the integrated winch solidifies this truck's intentions: work. Couple these strengths with strong payload and towing figures, and you have a truck that's ready for any kind of adventure you throw at it.
About the 2019 Ford F-150 Raptor:
The off-road-focused F-150 Raptor uses the same high-output version of the turbocharged 3.5-liter engine as the Limited. It has many of the same features as the XLT, but it offers a reinforced frame, a special four-wheel-drive system, a modified long-travel suspension, Fox shocks, flared fenders, skid plates, 17-inch wheels with upgraded off-road tires, and special interior trim with leather and cloth upholstery. The Raptor offers many of the same options as the XLT and the Lariat, as well as a few exterior styling packages, a Torsen limited-slip front differential and forged, bead-lock capable wheels.

About the 2019 Ram Power Wagon:
The off-road-themed Power Wagon is available only in crew-cab 4WD form with the short bed and the 6.4-liter V8. It has some slightly different exterior and interior styling changes, but it's the extensive mechanical upgrades that make a Power Wagon. They include unique 17-inch wheels shod with aggressive all-terrain tires, Bilstein off-road shock absorbers, tow hooks, skid plates, a manual transfer case, electronically locking front and rear differentials with a 4.10 axle ratio, hill descent control, an integrated front winch, and a front anti-roll bar that can be disconnected electronically to improve wheel articulation off-road.
The Power Wagon isn't just a trim level. It's also an option package you can add to a crew-cab Tradesman 4x4 with the 6.4-liter Hemi engine. Here you'll get all of the Power Wagon mechanical bits, including the fender flares, but without any other bodywork styling cues or graphics. It's a stealthy working man's Power Wagon at a lower price.

The other day I saw a Ford Raptor cruising on the Autobahn! That thing is huge! No wonder why they say “Murica” back in the USA 🇺🇸
Ma in germania o qui in Italia?
Andrea Era in Germania.
@@Leo-bz8kg Eh li sono appassionati di auto americane , li ho visto un convoglio di 4 f-350 con carrello dietro :)
I'm American, 70. That's in the south where boys are boys and sisters are scared.
Mike Btrfld Scared of their brothers big dick
Poor guy in the ram had zeeeerooo confidence!!
And know how
6:06 Carlos hit the raptors so hard that tv screen even blacked out 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Two different animals. But you have to admit for being a heavier truck the power wagon can still keep up
JR I don’t think it really could if this was a real Baja race lol
Realistically what are the odds of needing to race in the sand lol. For real work use it serves its purpose and so does the raptor.!
matt I don't know that raptor was all over.
Zachary Hart facts the raptor was sideways coming outta the puddles and the power wagon almost hit em
Chris Alhanouch Dust lights on the rear are a must when running in a group. I speak from experience. Luckily, the guy behind me stopped before major damage occurred; he hit my trailer hitch.
Need a better driver in the power wagon disable the traction control and it does great donuts
Yeah the guy in the power wagon has no clue what’s going on. He was lookin scared and worried haha
Carlos Lago! I kept thinking what sounds so familiar with this review. Good to see you man.
Great content guys !
Awesome review
The sheer difference in how the Ford absorbs the terrain at both high and low speeds, is unbelievable
Teo P a solid front axle never rides as smooth as and independent front suspension. Solid is stronger than cvt axles though. The Ram has way more ground clearance too which makes it less smooth. The Ram would out craw the Ford.
@@samsonreynolds3728
True, it's also how dampened the shocks are, and weight of the vehicle.
I don't know about crawling though, the Ram looks cumbersome and rigid, the Raptor agile.
Cheers 👍
Teo P Ram has disconnecting sway bars a lot more ground clearance a wench among other things
Teo P going fast has nothing to do with off road capability. If you try to be quick and agile over big rocks you’re going to break a lot of stuff.
@@samsonreynolds3728
Aye, fair enough.
It is built for Baja style offroading after all. 👍
Very fun video to watch! 👍
you guys needed to switch trucks for a while.
Very nice comparo Edmunds! Very high quality vid!
I would take either one
I agree 100% with that
Great stuff guys. .good review. .great scenes too..
Thank u. It hard to find video where u see these big rigs getting trashed. Awesome.
Good to see Carlos again!
Great video 👍🏻
If dealers weren't asking $10k over MSRP I'd get the raptor but next tax season it's the power wagon for me
I hope you enjoy the oil change on that Bugatta: the dealers charge $17,0000 to do it.
You could get $5,000 off on the 2019 Raptor if you come to Big Star Ford in Pearland Texas.
Love the Raptor all around except towing. Great comparison/review video, Carlos.
The Power Wagon looks like a freight train plowing through the mud.
Power wagon don't care

More videos like this please.
I took a rented 2016 Buick Regal on trails in Colorado and New Mexico tougher than these trails. Denver to Taos over the mountains.
😂
My 2000 Dakota could have done those trails.....
2 badass trucks I think good video guy's
The raptor is in its terrain right now, and yet the power wagon is still keeping up, thats impressive!
uh no. the guys were staying together. the Raptor would have been miles ahead if they were going all out.
@@enigma9789 which is why you never compare or test these two trucks together. I have a Power Wagon myself and would never race it, that truck is designed more for work and play in the Rocky trails the latter is a 1/2-ton built for high speed desert run and a little bit of trail fun.
enigma9789 the raptor lost control every time it came out of a puddle. Rewatch the video.
Top two trucks right now
I think you need a different person driving the Power Wagon, that was straight grandpa. Worried about everything lol
The Raptor driver was driving like a nut sending mud in the power wagon windshield like a 5 years old ! Don't ask yourself why the the ram was driving scared !
1badpete999 well he says it all when he says “ Thats what nice about a truck like this, that we are not exceeding the limits or even coming close to them”
Then what is the point of buying a Power Wagon if your not going to use it to its full potential? Just get a basic ram 1500
Don't say he was worried.. he was so caring about the car he's driving
Loved the video - looked like a lot of fun. I would probably go with the Raptor just based on handling high speeds vs. terrain as well as preference of the Ford looks and interior, but both off-road trucks look great to me. That Ram ipad looking dash doesn't quite do it for me though.
i just wish the raptor had the towing capacity. We bought a trailer to do a year on the road and are in the process of buying a truck. raptor would be nearly maxed out towing our little 26 foot trailer. Power wagon would handle it no problem. If the raptor could tow 10k it would be a no brainer for anyone.
Andrew Lentz no brainer for me would be the powerwagen.
Awesome video!
I would have to say the power wagon is better at slow rock climbing like Moab
carli makes a spring shock combo that lets it go as fast and smooth as the raptor if not better
Amazing job 👍🏼👏🏻👍🏼
Have had my Gen2 Raptor since Feb. 2017 and have put over 60 K miles on it...still puts a smile on my face everyday :)
wow the raptor made everything look so easy. Technology is great. Thanks for a very entertaining video
Great video. Solid comparison.
Did you have a preference for which truck you would want to own?
Batman would buy both to make his own BatTruck
It's not a great video. If you understand truck classes this isn't meant to happen. That Power Wagon belongs to a higher tier while the Raptor is a lower tier for their weight ratings. As always I'm fond of people comparing apples to oranges.
They should have done some rock crawling like the power wagon is made for.
@@1234567890ZETA LMAO - "this isn't meant to happen" - are you joking? Who gives a crap about tiers. Enjoy a video even if pits an apple against an orange. It might be fun to watch if you stop with the "this can't be happening" mentality. Just because you spent all your money on a Power Wagon and can't stand to watch it be compared with other trucks, don't hate on them. You should rethink saying videos are not good when you look at your own Power Wagon and Lego videos.
Power Wagon all day. You can get a tradesmen trim level with the power wagon package for way less that 60k.
This looks so fun !!! Dammit I’m so jealous
I really enjoy watching the comparison videos but feel this was lop sided a bit in favor of the raptor. Both trucks are excellent, well engineered, and high quality. Both do the specific/specialty job they were designed for and set the bar HIGH for the rest of the competition. I mean they've done a lot of innovative things, r and d, and simply have millions of miles of proven accomplishments to back both trucks. Ford and Ram are the top two factory off road contenders hands down. But... I am waiting for my brand new custom ordered red 2019 power wagon to arrive in the next few weeks. More traditional off roading suites my needs more so than high speed baja racing. Although the Raptors are pretty dang cool.
the raptor is good looking
On the outside only because the inside with ford small display console looks like a Hyundai display !
NO, is perfect looking. love it
I'd only take the Wagon if I had to work with it.
"The rain washed out the trail we were going to take" uh , that IS THE trail you should now definitely take ! 😏
If Ram invested more money in the Rebel it could easily compete with the Raptor. Interior wise it’s already there, and engine options, well nothing beats a Hemi. But you can’t compare a $45K msrp to a $75K msrp.
One thing I’ve always wanted to see out of the Rebel is a wider body like the Raptors. If the Rebel has that wider stance and better suspension I don’t see how the Raptor would be better other than by name honestly.
Sorry but the ram is higher than 45,000 starting price.
17:25 Hillary for Prison Info Wars sticker lololololol
Power wagon is more like, work during the week and play in the mud on the weekends
Robert De La Rosa yup. Raptor is more like play in the mud during the week and do the same on the weekends😂😂😂 I love this kind of truck
I traded my Raptor for my Power Wagon, I thought I would miss the Raptor but I absolutely have no regrets. I was rarely able to take my Raptor to a location to do Baja stuff and it had a hard time fitting down roads in the mountains where I live. The Power Wagon fits and climbs better, plus it seats 6 like I needed and does fine in the dunes when we go, if I lived by the dunes then the Raptor would have made sense but for me, Power Wagon is better.
So much more off roading to be done. Sand dunes and deep snow. I use my power wagon to pull my toyhauler into the beach sand dunes. Where the lockers help a bunch.
Where was this filmed? I want to take my truck out these roads
Red Rock Canyon in CA.
@@Lena-vq9fo Awesome! Thanks! 🤙
One of the best off road tests I’ve ever watched! Well done Guys
And the power wagon has electronic controlled swap bar disconnect
Raptor vs. Rivian. It's coming and it sounds like a great movie. I'm making popcorn...
Woah. Close call @6:45 .
I have a ram 2500 with 37s and it's a beast in the desert
I need to upgrade my 2500 to the power wagon suspension. If I were to take mine on a road like that I’d have a concussion from hitting my head on the roof.
no you get a carli kit run with raptor all day
All in all I thank both trucks did very well.
I ready for that trx ram to get here
That's gonna be a Raptor killer.
I own a Gen Raptor , but you just might be right...
Darius Hope the trx will be the next monster to beat! If Ram stays true to the concept that is.... they like to bait and switch.
Word! Can’t wait
those are trucks having fun right there!
I had a raptor in my comment is not fast enough! So I traded it in and eventually went for a 2019 Ford super crew Roush with the 5.0 supercharged motor and now that brought the fun back
Assuming it was the washed out course that foiled this test, yet still it appears there were opportunities in the area to show some more technical terrain or off road trails to test the limits of what these types of trucks are capable of and perhaps reach their limits. What you showed was a walk in the park for either truck, barely scratching the surface of their respective capabilities. It still managed to be a fun video to watch however.
From the start of the video I knew who they were gonna putt on top right away. I love the raptor but these Two different trucks and both are bad ass
6:03 Did the raptors screen just take a dump on that bump?
For better immersion
Power Wagon don’t care!!!
Brian Djordjevic tfl reference
Over MSRP of course 😆
Brian Djordjevic don’t care
It does care if you don't know how to turn on the lockers. RTFM
@@k53847 It has a limited slip/locker combo. Still not nearly as good as when fully locked but still works surprisingly well.
An aspect of the Power Wagon I like is the front bench seat, cuz now and then when you're off-roading, you need to get out the other side...
Yes, bucket seats are for mustang's bench seat let's the girlfriend slide over next to you.
Great video, I really love the hilary for prison sticker though hahahh!
I'm a die hard Ram fan but id buy both if I could, they are not build to compete one against another as you said but still interesting to see the best off road trucks out, I'd also consider the zr2, the trd pro tacoma and the gladiator rubicon in a catogerie of off road trucks even if they aren't full size, also the trx will be an interesting competitor coming in the future :)
Two great trucks 🥳You can’t go wrong either way . But you can go wrong if you get a Silverado or GMC lol 🤢🤮 😝
Ale Orozco that’s what I was going to say!
Thatsl sierra at4 is real nice and powerful but you are right. GM interiors will never compare because they will mever wake up. But you could easily throw that at4 in this video
Ed's Fortune you can’t afford a raptor or a powerwagon, I used to be a full chevy guy until the early 2000’s and I can safely say chevy is ass
@@steezymk8815 Me too I'm done with GM and their incompetence! All they can give us is the 6.2...that's it?! And the design of their trucks is if 2 different people design both front and rear.
Could you do a video exactly like this but with the Silverado TrailBoss, that’d be so awesome.
Trail boss competes with the rebel and the fx4
@@alew3555 Really? Wow
Unless its changed for 2019, my 2016 PW can use the lockers in low range only. and I know this is just a grab and go review comparison, but for things like washboarding and anything on the trail, I air my tires down to 30 PSI when on dirt, the PW has special rims to resist bead disengagement(not bead locks) this helps TREMENDOUSLY with the whoops and washboards, since the factory tires are an HD light truck tire they use a pressure thats typically good for roads but not for off road.
Loved the video. Used to be partial to the raptor and still love it but got me a 2019 Ram 1500 limited so it would be a tough call but Power Wagon by a nose. BUT the RAM Rebel TRX!!! Game over!!!
Ram Rebel trx vs Shelby Baja Raptor.
Judging by the way the RAM was shaking when driving on the moguls, to me this review was like comparing a light weight fighter with a heavy weight one, in fact I'm very surprise the RAM made it back in one piece!
Happy Car Reviews it’s a heavy duty truck. Way stronger than a half ton.
PW isn’t made for high speed desert running. It’s made to go over obstacles and crawl over harsh terrain like the Wrangler.
Oddly enough the power wagon is less expensive than a rubicon because of the 0% financing offered.
Bin gespannt...of my 19, Power Wagon 👍🌶
I take it that ground clearance was measured in the middle of the vehicle. Thus being the max ground clearance and not minimum ground clearance measured from the lowest hanging part which is typically the rear diff.
It should be the minimum aka rear diff or rear struts.
Ground clearance is always measured at the lowest hanging point.
@@nicholassmith7048 Good
Well, that looked like fun lol. Carlos looked he was having a blast. Do you prefer down this or driving sports cars on a track?
One power wagon please
Duas picapes top, a Raptor está mais bonita e a Ram também não fica para trás, qualquer uma delas aguenta o trampo no fora de estrada com muito estilo ainda.
Looks great!! What is the durability of the wrap resistance against rock chips n such from gravel roads? Just curious?
Carlos says why would you want to TOW a toy when your truck is the Toy. I would think many people might be towing a trailer to go camping off road. Am I not thinking straight?
If you pay 90K Canadian dollars for a Raptor it should tow much more, and the miniature center console display like you see in cheap korean cars imports ! Lets just say the raptor is still ahead but with the new 2018-2019 Ram they are getting close to the ford bumper, Ford should redesign their inside !
rule of thumb you don't play with what got you there or you might stay there .......................................
"High school mode" lol
Besides a steep buy-in, fuel consumption's likely to clean your clock...
you dont buy these trucks for fuel mileage
My wife and I Test drove the ram while the interior was downright gorgeous it just didn’t get our blood pumping.
I really love that Ram
What location did they go off-roading?
Did the 19 Power Wagon have a front camera option?
Love my Raptor!
Anyone know where in CA they were at?
EDIT: NVM, figured it out @ 8:50
why when comparing the raptor do they always mention the raptor not having a front locking diff but always fail to mention it does have a front torsen limited slip diff which is not far off from a locking diff in capabilities?
It’s not a locker, but the Raptor has a Torsten limited-slip differential in the front.
Need a power wagon now
Damn I wish we had roads like that in Ohio
I'm disappointed to not see anything such as likes, dislikes, pros, and cons, followed by a final verdict.
you guys need a better communication system.
Yeah, those talkies don't really go with driving off-road or just driving.
@@joshmiller1640 both hands on the wheel at all times.lol.
6:45 That power wagon was about to plow through that whimpy raptor!
💪
The Ford has a Torsen front differential (which is a patented design) one of the best limited slip differentials...
The torsen is beyond the limited slip diff as a diff is beyond a chain drive.
Guess that's why Tundra stayed with the Limited slip too?
They should compare the Ford Super Duty Tremor against the Ram Power Wagon.
Power wagon destroys the tremor
Wait til the ram rebel TRX comes out, a ram raptor with king shocks and a hellcat motor. I’d still rather have a PW, wish they offered a cummins powered PW. I bought a 2016 cummins and put some 37’s, a Thuren suspension setup and ARB lockers next. Will be what the PW should have been from the factory
…and way too heavy!
power wagon ftw because bits capable of doing a lot of things specially on towing heavy trailers. Beautiful interior too.
Hmm the road to Plaster City. A tour of the gypsum factory would be more exciting. You were just 20 miles from a true trail test and you missed it. Probably knowing.
Still can’t wait for the trx though! Can’t wait to see how that monster stacks up to the raptor since its nickname is the raptor killer.
thats if it ever comes out theres not even a working pre production model yet and there has been no talk about it in the last year for now the raptor is the king of off road production trucks and its not even a debate
Without taking a single thing away from the Ram, you guys weren't quite honest about the Raptor you tested having a front Torsen mechanical limited slip that works VERY well.... And the Torsen can be ordered as a stand alone option for only about $450 in the lower option groups.I agree with others in hoping to see more trail crawling...The Ram would finally outdo the Raptor as the rock crawling got more intense, but with the front LSD diff you and maybe some viewers would be surprised how well the Raptor would do...that is if you can get the oversized F150 to fit down some slimmer trails!...Full disclosure: I own a 18' Raptor but think the Ram is in a class of its own in the conventional 4wd full size truck market..and of course a class leading interior...Thank for the video guys! :)
What's the location of these trails you went on?
So is it safe to say that Ford has better off roading trucks across the board ( F150 FX4 package). I'm asking cause I'm looking at the FX4 or Tundra TRD Off-road or Pro
Awesome! I love my Ram but I still haven’t seen a video where the Raptor can’t follow the Power Wagon.
On two occasions I have actually seen the Raptor be better than the Powerwagon crawling up steep grades in test drives. It had the testers a bit confused. The Raptor diff can be locked up front as well by depressing the brakes which is a feature of the torsen diff. The raptors suspension gives it more bite when climbing and having no diff hanging down up front allows it to get through mud better as well. It also has very good articulation but not as good as Power wagon. So the Power wagon is really only better at 1 aspect off road and even then not by much. 9 out 10 scenarios have the Raptor being superior. Unless you count the winch. And then there is the work ability which is far and away superior in the Wagon. If just off roading get a Raptor, if you want more than a toy get a Wagon
Falcon 4917 I’ve heard the ride is a lot better in the Raptor on the road than the Power Wagon as well which makes a big difference , besides the fact that the Raptor retains its value better.
I drive a 2016 Rebel and was hoping to upgrade to a 2020 Rebel (when the time comes) but for $150 more per month I can have a Raptor which won’t depreciate as poorly.
@@mjg6377 yeah forgot about ride quality. Depreciation is a big factor as well. I agree. The Raptor truly is a standalone when it comes to trucks and not all that many people need 3/4 ton capabilities
@@Falcon-mc5fs If you play in areas with rocks/off camber scenarios the Power Wagon will keep going where as the Raptor will stop. I'm not sure what you're talking about with the Gen 2 Raptor having a lockable front. Go try doing an off camber obstacle climb, the front will one wheelie peely all day no matter what you do with your brake pedal.
@@WilliamStewart1 no the one wheel peele won't happen if you depress the brake and throttle at the same time. It is a lock that is used only on torsen diffs. Even the gen 1 had the feature. The Hummer H1 has the same feature. There is a group in Arizona that runs raptors in rock crawling tours. The only true advantage off road for the power wagon is articulation.
Couple quick qeustions: did the raptor have the torsen front option? Did you air down on either? It's nice for the raptor, but it's a must for the power wagon because their stock pressures are waaay too high for off roading on account of it being a 3/4 ton and meant for loading. One more comment - can you talk about that claimed 14.2 inches of ground clearance on the ram? It's got 33 inch tires and an 11.5 inch rear ring gear in a solid axle housing. the math doesn't add up. 33/2 = 16.5 inches. 11.5/2 = 5.75 inches. 16.5 - 5.75 =/= 10.75 inches from ground to the bottom of the rear ring...to say nothing of the housing. What are you trying to pull ram?
The Raptor has a bit more clearance under the ring gear yes, I don't take it these guys actually know anything about these sorts of things though, most likely just read the brochure and then go filming. The PW has more bumper/body clearance though which may have them mixed up.
@@WilliamStewart1 i know Dan actually knows his way around a truck, but sometimes i think even the best will simply take the manufacturer at their word
All Gen 2 Raptors have the Torsen posi front axle.
