This is actually my favorite Police song. Yeah, there's Roxanne, Every Breath You Take, Message in a Bottle, and a plethora of others but this one really does it for me.

This song and album were huge in the States, I was always thought it was a good little pop song. The Police were very well received here from the beginning, who can forget the first time they heard Roxanne? I saw them in 81 touring this album. They were great…

Never tried to analyze the lyrics to this song.., remember Sting's distinctive voice and Andy Summers unique guitar sound ( maybe a bit of reggae? ) that drew me to this band.., back in my younger years.. definitely stood out.., Thanx for the re-wind Alan.., keep 'em coming

I can remember at the time at least one reviewer argued that most of this single was filler and they were running out of ideas. The song is smarter than they were.
Aside from the observations on the professional use/misuse of language I've felt the more appealing strand is as a description of feeling stupid and incoherent when you are searching for words trying to impress someone you have really taken a fancy to. Then there's that period following when feelings dominate and all language seems inadequate and irrelevant.
I think it pairs nicely with the earlier "Does Everyone Stare" which describes the physical anxiety before a date; the wish to make an impression, but trying not to appear to be too eager while also being seen as caring more than any potential rival. I think it's very funny, the musical equivalent of slapstick comedy.

Alan , isn’t it great to have a song that’s both fun and even a little slapstick but also self aware about language ! Great views my friend , gives me something to ruminate over 😎
