This was such a happy Gem video! I keep grabbing for my coloured pencils a heck of a lot more these days than I used to so much fun! I don’t get subscription boxes BUT love getting the enjoyment out of them through other people like yourself instead!

Really surprised when noting the prices and value you didn't mention the print was valued at £14.99 - given Artful recently raised the price of their boxes, which I had no problem with, it is taking the p*ss to include that piece of card that went straight in the recycling.

  • @thearchitectssketchbook5776

Artful always seem to do a black and a white whatever the art supplies and I always feel they are a bit of a waste albeit less so with the pencils as you can draw white on a dark surface as you showcased really effectively. Think their worst example of that was in the watercolour box where they had a white and a black and then repeated that in the upgrade box. Will be interesting to see if they repeat that foible in future boxes.
Agree with you on their paper quality tends to be a good bit better than branded cheaper papers. And thus far has performed well with most of their art supplies.

I found the watercolour situation rather strange I have to say. Time will tell!

Hey Gem 💎 what a lovely box you have there. My choice would be to see you do something purely of your very own choosing. Only because you’re so in your element with colored pencils and if you’re going to get the other set order those and wait until you get them and then do the video. Depending on how quickly they ship em out to you.
Just my two cents cause I’ll watch whatever you post, I don’t mind. I’m here cause I like your personality! Take Care XOXO 😘

Gem Gem's back! Back again! Gem Gem's back! Tell a friend! /end bad Eminem parody! This is a lovely box. Very exciting. I would like to see you do something slightly out of your comfort zone of this one. Since pencils are in your comfort zone I think you should reach outside of it. Maybe try caricature! Or Chibi! Love the testing you did!

Thank you for such an in depth review! I was surprised the paper was so smooth. Like you said - it’s good for sketching. Overall I really like the Artful boxes and concept.

Yup, I agree with you on the UV resistance info for the price, and the open stock.

SO glad your feeling better! I have enjoyed working with pencils for many years, but I am more of a painter. I use watercolor paints and then going in with pencils to add texture or details. I use water-based or watercolor pencils or breaking out with a more oil based or even wax on top of my watercolor paint base. I buy the Germany forged blade replacements for my sharpeners. I believe the M&R are the same. I will not purchase these pencils. I want to save up for more Derwent Inktense and Poly's from Faber Castell. Well those are my pencil wants these days. I broke down and purchased the square Brutfuner pencils for a fun easy going coloring time. Coloring without pressure to produce an Artwork is always of a concern to me. I do put to much pressure at times. If I start with the "cheaper" pencils I do not feel badly if it goes awry! I would love to see a bigger highland cow picture, I have been looking for a picture to paint with soft pastels but nothing has gripped me from the "free" websites. Perhaps you have a cow picture of one of your herd? Just thinking out loud! I am excited to see what comes along! Be safe and have a lovely time!

Excellent review. Had a good chuckle when you were opening the box of pencils..."told ____ that I was going to be very critical of these pencils. Oh, they look very pretty inside the box!" Brutal right out of the gate, eh? Lol!

Watched the video, and then rewatched parts of it to get your overall feelings towards the pencils. I love Artful, but I felt very underwhelmed by this box. (The mail delivery person was very impressed by the package-it is awesome) I may be feeling the effects of the price increase, the late delivery, and the North American shipping fees but I cannot help but think I could have paid a bit less for the same amount of material (minus the book). I am fairly certain I will use the materials (especially with all of your pencil crayon tutorials/content), but still wish there were a few more colours included. When I took the lid off of the box, I looked inside and swore there was room for even three more pencils before realizing that the lid was the container and it fit the 36 pencils perfectly. I guess that is enough griping. Looking forward to watching you use this media and hear about your conversations with the bigwigs at Ohh Deer. Stay safe.

Great review Gem. Thorough and funny too, as always. I agree that the reds are oranges are disappointingly same-same. Through the camera at least the sand and sunflower look almost identical and the third orange just looks like a lighter version of the other two. Also definitely didn’t need all 4 of those reds, one warm and one cool at most. Seems like they didn’t want to put too big a variety of colors to make you buy their other sets. Would be a hard no from me, can’t afford to waste 4 out of 36 colors on duplicates. And why is it that these boxes never really include suitable paper. Seems to be a theme, whether it’s paper that is too smooth for pencils, or too thin for wet mediums. You’d think they would want to show their products and their paper to their best advantage. Glad you like the feeling of them though. Looking forward to seeing what you create with them. Stay safe and well💕

Yay, I've been waiting for this one :D I ordered the upgrade box as well and it definitely rounds out the colour palette nicely. I'd love to see some kind of sketching or possibly the daisychain style illustration. My fave white pencil is the Derwent Drawing Chinese White.
