Before the nationwide lockdown, Kyle and I were able to take an early spring fly fishing trip on the South Platte River's Dream Stream in search of a variety of trout.
Tried fly fishing for the first time here yesterday, nothing except two lost (small) fish in 3 hours before I switched to spinning gear and caught 3 fish (biggest was a 14" rainbow) in my last 2 hours. Meanwhile, I passed a guy in a lawn chair with a zebco and a crappie jig who said he caught 20 fish, with several 4 pounders. Oh man have I been going at it wrong lol
Bringing back memories. Fished the S. Platte -Dream Stream section for about 70 days in 2000. Fish were big and beautiful. Watched a good friend land a 32" cuttbow one day. Great video. Your breathing cracked me up.
If you could at the end of your video have tips of type of fly and tippet to use, that would be helpful for a beginner. I am a U.S. Army Veteran and I really enjoy your videos.
You guys did great there! Me not so much but didn't skunk either. My buddy got a Kokanee there. It was the only fish he caught that day. Clouds of BWO's and not a single riser. Fished Spinney a few times. Wow incredible. Had 3x breakoffs. Ice cold beers at cimmeron trading post.
Yeah, that stretch can be tricky. Flows and water temperature are the most important thing when it comes to the success of that place. Also, with the amount of subsurface food available, I've never known it to be a great dry fly fishery. Spinney reservoir can be a lot of fun if you hit it just right. I've had similar experiences of big fish snapping thick tippet. As long as you're ending the day with good company and a cold beer, I consider that to be a success. -Tim
The sky is the limit! If you're looking for trout, cold mountain streams in the west or up north is you're best bet, if you live in the southern states, look into bass fishing with a fly.
Yes! Another great episode from you guys! I really enjoy these. What a beautiful day out too. The fish in there are simply brutes that put up one hell of a fight a few years ago before I started filming I would go out there once a week and felt like I was in heaven everytime. What lb line are you using if you don’t mind me asking? Thanks for a awesome video!
Thanks for your time and posting! I was there last weekend and used blue poison tungs and caught a 9.5lb brown. My Pb from there. What color worked for you?
I was using the blue wired Poison Tungsten with the purple Mylar ice dubbing . They really seemed to key in on it. Congrats on your brown! I'd love to see a photo. The browns out of that stretch always seem to have great color. Oh, and thanks for watching! I really appreciate it.
Thanks! I like your channel. It reminds me of the trips that I take with a friend. This brown was big but odd looked, big kype jaw, more white and less caramel than normal. It was one of the better fights I’ve had on that river. Not sure how to get you a pic?
Amazing work yet again. Every video I see is just great. You guys ever go out to radium hot springs near steamboat, on the Colorado river? Its a big deep river but I've caught some massive browns out there. Next video maybe??? Also are you guys veterans? I just ask because of the name of your channel and just curious. Thank you for the great content.
Caleb, thanks for kind words. I’ve never fished radium hot springs. I’ll have to look into that. I’m always down to fish new places. Many of the guys you see in my videos are military vets and first responders. I started Combat Fly Fishing more as a play on words as a way to “combat” the stress and anxiety that so many feel in life. I even wrote a book called Cast Out of Darkness which is a fictional story about a man who uses fly fishing to combat PTSD, survivors remorse, and substance abuse. If you’re interested, email an address and I’ll send you a complimentary copy. combatflyfishing@gmail.com -Tim
Great video. So beautiful. I will be in Colorado in late April and just wondering what set up you recommend? I'm a beginner but a very experienced "regular" fisherman. Also, is fly fishing any good in late April?
I think a good fly fishing set up for fishing the rivers in Colorado would be a 9' 5wt rod with a weight forward floating fly line. That will meet the majority of your fishing needs. -Tim
@@chandlerchildress3610 Right below the 11 mile dam is where I mostly go, but between 11 mile and spinney is gorgeous as well (also known as the dream stream)
Fishin With Jack any of the flies you would fish a typical Colorado tailwater will work here. The thing to pay the most attention to is the flows. Anything over 200 cfs this time of the year, is probably going to fish pretty well. There’s a water flow data link and a lot of other helpful information on my website. combatflyfishing.com/s-platte-dream-stream
It depends on the water I’m fishing. If I’m fishing a deep run that I can get my rod tip over, I’ll use a tight line technique. Water that I have to cast to, I’ll use an indicator. -Tim
was it my imagination or did I see a split shot between you squirmy worm and your other flies or do you place your split shot before all 3 flies? thanks.
I consider myself pretty much dialed into the DS but I have never seen anyone as proficient as you there. I just hope others do not think it is easy because most newbies will be greatly disappointed.
Rylan, I would say that the drift is the most important part of the equation. Maintaining a natural as possible drag free drift will account for most of your success. -Tim
I typically fish a 4wt rod there, but I was fishing a 6 wt that particular day. I think pheasant tails 18-22, gray and black RS2s 20-22, Graphic Caddis and Buckskins 16-18, Tan San Juan worm, and Darth Baetis 18-22. -Tim

New subscriber. Really fun video and appreciate the instructive commentary. Lost a really big brown (23”+) on The Colorado on my 64th birthday last fall (remember that episode where you got dunked, well my guide didn’t get dunked but he whiffed and I had 6x on...happens, what a fight). Has me jonesing for a trip to the dream stream. Looks like I better wait till spring! Really happy to find you.
Well Fro, thanks for the subscription! The Dream Stream is one of the greatest stretches of the South Platte River. When you do land that trophy brown, remember to send me a picture! -Tim
Incredible... you caught more big fish that trip than i have in my lifetime... so fun to watch on a cold day in Denver.
Very inspirational! I hope I do 10% of that this spring!
Thanks, Ron. I hope you do well. -Tim

Great video. Going here for the first time on Sunday. Can’t wait!
Gorgeous day and lunkers.

Maria Lee that was the trophy of the trip. She was taped at 27”. -Tim
That is huge! Is that the biggest trout you have ever caught?
Maria Lee not the biggest trout I ever caught. The biggest was in April of 2004. 30” Rainbow Trout.
Do you have an indicator on or only watching your leader/fly line? Thanks!
