      I can sympathize, as my uncle drove himself to the hospital one night about 14 years ago after he woke up coughing blood. Turns out that one of his heart valves had burst and it was filling his lungs with blood (and he was only in his 40s, and he was in good physical shape at the time too, he and his sons would go hunting together fairly regularly). Probably the scariest period of my life, due to not knowing if he would even survive (his doctors only gave him a 40% chance of survival) and worrying about my cousins as while it was my uncle, it was their father in that situation. Thankfully he did survive (he had surgery to replace the burst heart valve with a metal one), and if you met him today you'd never guess he had been through something like that. When he was being taken for surgery they had a nurse running alongside his gurney literally pounding on his chest just to keep his heart beating, he was in that bad of a situation.

    I've driven myself to a hospital emergency room around midnight without obeying stoplights. There was no traffic and stopping at lights would have been merely a bureaucratic compliance without benefit but with likely danger to my own condition. Laws can be beneficial to society but rational common sense is important.

    • @nemo227
      @nemo227 Před 4 lety +38

      @AT AR I think that's true. I've been saying for years that all laws infringe liberty but it's often (but not always) that laws are made because of the bad habits or anti-social behavior of a few individuals. A simple example I've noticed where I live: when the traffic lights are out at a four-way intersection traffic generally works smoothly without delay as drivers in each direction take their turn. When the lights are functioning and traffic is light there is a lot of unnecessary waiting for the lights to cycle.

    I'm 51, when I was 3 I just about went into a diabetic coma at home so my Dad put my Mom and me in his 1965 El Camino and drove it like he stole it to the hospital, Dad raced midgets and sprint cars as a hobby, when he got to the hospital he left his El Camino running with both doors open in front of the hospital and rushed me inside. Somewhere between our house and the hospital a cop tried to catch my Dad and was left in the dust, the cop figured anyone that drove like that had a reason. At the hospital as I was being treated the cop found my Dad and told him he parked his truck and handed him the keys and wished me the best, he also told my Dad if he ever saw him drive like that again he'd throw the book at him. ;-)

      @@jwalker7567 J Walker while I agree it could be grammatically confusing from the driver's perspective, the main point of the sign is with respect to the precondition of the light being red. If the sign said "stop before turning right", does that mean you have to stop before turning right even on a green light or protected right turn? So the sign saying "right turn on red after stop" is giving you two instructions: 1. Turning right on a red light is allowed (since a lot of US intersections don't allow turns on red) and 2. You have to come to a full stop before turning. yeah it's not exactly ideal but I guess that's what the transport dept thought would be the best way to say that in the fewest number of words.
      Also I find it hard to generalize and say all American signs have subpar grammar. Like "no turn on red" or "yield to pedestrians" sounds fine to me
