Smart Streets - Connected Streets for the Traffic of the Future!

Benjamin Kiesling of Fraunhofer FOKUS introduces and provides a visualization of the ”Smart Streets“ Project. Mobile devices, “wearables” of pedestrians, connected cars, autonomous vehicles, delivery robots, drones, networked street furniture from the digital display board to the sensor-monitored wastebin and the sewer system - the street of the future has to be intelligent and networked. It requires a continuous Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure with transmission standards that are suitable for data communication (Bluetooth LE, LORA, Li-FI) and innovative IoT sensors and services to ensure the safety and comfort of all networked road users.
End-to-end network coverage for digitalized IoT data intercation in cities is very challenging and expensive. Due to their exposed location, the dense network with a relatively short distance to each other and the existing energy connection, equipping existing street lighting with networked and smart IoT gateways is a cost-efficient solution.
