By the time you see this, I’ll be partying at Disney World, but instead of leaving you without a video this week, I decided to share one of the newly-recorded videos from my Publish & Thrive course on the importance of knowing your genre for selling books.

Thank you for this timely video. I’ve been struggling with whether my books are romantic historical fantasy or historical fantasy romance. I’ve decided they’re historical fantasy romance because the romance drives so much of the plot, there are HFNs, and I have a different couple for each book. The distinction is so thin!

I read a complaint from an author recently that fantasy romance wasn't selling. That author blamed readers for not having the stamina to read a long book. Knowing that fantasy romance trends towards doorstoppers, I had a look at his book. The MC was 14 and heavily sexualised. The "love interest" was a man in his 30s. I can tell why that book isn't selling. It was categorised as fantasy romance not creepy ick. Knowing genre expectations is so important!

You'll see most of the same or similar genres in MG fiction but some will be less common. Like you don't really see romance as a main MG genre, even if there will potentially be a friendship or small romantic subplot. Magical Realism is a great genre for Middle Grade! You can either do your research on the various subgenres at Amazon and Google Play (those two have the biggest lists of subgenres to research) or you can find a list like on this blog: www.writerandthewolf.com/2020/08/21/a-guide-to-middle-grade-and-ya-genres-and-subgenres/

My Question: I have three books published in a small town sweet contemporary genre. I don't have a lot of reviews, but the reviews I have are positive! What types of words should I use to describe my books to increase sales on Amazon?
One big thing would be to try to identify any popular tropes you're using in your books. Second chance? Enemies to lovers? Things like that. Small Town sweet contemporary is such a fun genre and it will help to really drill down to tropes in each book and the community or friendship aspect of the town.

Maybe you are just more of an intuitive writer, which is fine too! Can you point to any books that you feel are similar to yours in theme? That might help you categorized your work!
@@HeartBreathings by them for me i anyways considered mine romance. Except with an exception to my current book that's more of a mystery type

Of course! There are hundreds of different genres and subgenres and niches! Can't mention every one in a single video but the important thing is to understand what you're writing
