Wow, just an effortless outing by Ripper. The true unsung hero, and unappreciated legend of heavy metal. I wish Iced Earth had kept him on, Glorious Burden is a modern classic, and Framing Armegeddon grows on me.
Rob Halford is an absolute legend and always will be. However, Painkiller from him live in recent years (Past decade or so) has been outright painful to listen to. This, by contrast, is nailed almost flawlessly.
Ripper is 44 in this video. Compare that to Rob's 38-40 live voice on Painkiller tour and his live Fight performances and it's very apparent Tim's voice is holding up FAR, FAR better. In fact, Tim sounds even better than his own late 20s early 30s voice. The difference; Rob was heavier into drugs and drinking than Tim. So anyone who can sing needs to keep their ass away from drugs and don't be pouring alcohol over your fucking vocals.
You are absolutely wrong, non drugs, non alcohol, the problems is TOURS, Halford has made 40 years of BIG TOURS with 250 dates by year...thats the only reason...Ripper only pass 3 years making big shows...Halford in the 70-80 blowed away 10 ripper owens....
While constant touring will definitely contribute to damaging vocal cords, alcohol, drugs ans especially smoking will definitely fuck up your voice as well.
Lol, Rob was 41 when the album was released, and toured up to close to the same age. The difference? Mr. Halford had ALREADY been touring relentlessly for decades - it takes it's toll, but, Mr. Halford is now pushing 70 and still going strong. The other thing you eggheads never realize is that it is much easier to sing a cover than come up with those vocals, phrasing, etc. from scratch - THAT is what makes Mr. Halford a legend. As great a singer as Ripper is - When he writes just ONE, ONE legendary song that people are still singing 30 years from now, then he will only have to do that about 50 more times to be in Mr. Halford's league. I see video after video of Ripper singing awesomely............but still singing other people's songs.
But, Rob halford is sober since 1986, this is the touring that has tired his voice, and sorry but At least Rob halford has a versatile chest voice, it's not the case of Tim ripper, without offense to him.
Unlike someone else. he's not rushing through words. like the song. hes doing it as it should be. 98. 02. 11. listen to the shadows are alive.... that scream is amazing
Interesting to see what was half of Megadeth and what they've been doing since. And I gotta say, Ripper owns the Priest songs he sings. No disrespect to the Godfather Halford but on stage Owens delivers consistently.
Its amazing how much better Ripper sounds here than most of the time he did this song WITH Priest!!! I like how he actually enunciates the words hes singing, unlike his recordings on Live in London and '98 Meltdown
Halford was already past his prime when he had to do this live. By about three years. Plus he had nodules... so he had a lot to contend with. Also, he was singing in standard tuning. This is downtuned, unfortunately I'm not musically literate enough to tell you what tuning.
@InsurrectionJoe no i wasn't at the Montreal show but i have seen all the footage from it here on youtube. I saw Judas Priest at Sauna Open Air in Finland and i will see them again in April, and it was and will bee awesome. The performance and power Judas Priest have now haven't they had in years. The power of halford's voice now is more than amazing for hes age. Thanks!
Jhonatan Moreno kinda hard to play it right when the drummer is playing like he's on Crack ... we had a drummer that cracked out all the time that played every song so fast, the singer couldn't catch his breath, I couldn't solo and we had to play 60 songs a night instead of 40 ... we had enough and kicked him out
I think Drover did a good job, I know Tipton's style and I can identify his tone and solos amongst hundred other players, but I can't play what he plays note fot note for the life of me ! I think Grover did good. Holt filled in for Hanneman, was he able to play Angel of death and Seasons in the abyss solos note for note ? No, not at all, but he filled in the gap and was good too.
Yep, he does. Halford is a great singer in the studio, but Tim owns it both on the records and on stage. I've never seen Rob singing Painkiller as well as Tim live.
Matt Kenney The band is tuned down because songs like 'Burn in Hell', which he sings in this same set, are downtuned. Listen to Winters Bane. Or his tribute band, British Steel. Ripper can hit the notes in Painkiller just fine in their original key.
Matt Kenney halfords band was downtuned also, look at the anaheim dvd when halford sings painkiller, its all downtuned, point being, as you get older you cant keep that style of singing up all the time, halford is case in point. i think halfords golden era was during the resurrection era, brilliant and consistant as hell. in fact all of halfords solo stuff was all downtuned.
Tim is a great singer and an incredible screamer. I very much liked his two albums with Judas Priest but he isn't a very good front man and that made it hard for some to take to him. He doesn't have any stage presence but there isn't any question about his ability to sing!
Watch Halford's performances of 'Resurrection' and the ending of 'Jawbreaker' from the Live at Saitama Super Arena performance in 2011. If you think Halford can't hit high notes anymore you are wrong. His voice sounds quite crippled when performing with priest these days probably due to a tight schedule or something, but with his own band he appears to be in much better shape.
that would be a great metal band right there, if they would do some original material work with the talent that's there I'm if sure they would have some major crushing metal songs.
Wow that's quite the Judas Priest cover band with my fellow Canadian brother in arms Mr.Glen Drover & I also noticed killer Paul Bostaph on drums, that's fucking wicked! & I can't be sure enough who's on bass guitar but it kinda looks like James Lomenzo?
Shame about the guitar player. I really look forward to Tim re-doing the Jugulator and Demolition albums like he intends to do, and KK has expressed wanting to work with Tim on an interview. Amazing voice!
It seems to be the laws of the universe that if a vocalist ever performs Painkiller well live, the guitarist must screw up the solo. In Halford's best performance of it live in 2003, his guitarist was all over the place. Then when Corey Glover did a great job of it live with Judas Priestess, their guitarist also messed up. Legend says if any band ever nails the whole thing live the force of it will cause the universe to spontaneously combust.
@616Dave616 in my opinion you are wrong.First of it's almost 20 years of age difference and have you even heard Judas Priest Montreal 2011?And how do you think Tim will sound in 20 years? And overall this tour Judas Priest is untouchable cause their performance is greater than it's been in 30 years.I think he sounds much better now than 1982-1992 because hes voice has more depth than it ever has had. So Judas Priest and Halford is way better than this as I said earlier. Thanks!
@PumpkinPriest Yes on that i agree but the title says best liver version ever.If you had put best live version of Tim. iIt had been easier to understand cause now the title says this is the best versions of whoever sings it. Thanks!
+Barry Gil Pilar his only problem , like many people said, was that he wasn't a real frontman, there was a lack of carisma during his performances. Tim Ripper Owens is getting close to 50 dont forget so go back and watch Halford at 50 in concert. he definitely is not better than Tim. Like Halford said about himself. . the Halford rock god legend and reputation always exceeded his actual talent. don't get me wrong Halford definitely has one of the best voices ever in metal !
Wow, just an effortless outing by Ripper. The true unsung hero, and unappreciated legend of heavy metal. I wish Iced Earth had kept him on, Glorious Burden is a modern classic, and Framing Armegeddon grows on me.
Framing Armageddon >>> Glorious Boredom.
Rob Halford is an absolute legend and always will be. However, Painkiller from him live in recent years (Past decade or so) has been outright painful to listen to. This, by contrast, is nailed almost flawlessly.
a lonely wolf out there who is making his own history
why isn't this guy on top? he sounds better then any metal singer i've heard in years
These guys should name themselves MegaPriest
The Ripper reinvented Judas Priest !!!
Tim is a metal god right up there with Halford and Dio... vocals just amazing!!!
Ripper is 44 in this video. Compare that to Rob's 38-40 live voice on Painkiller tour and his live Fight performances and it's very apparent Tim's voice is holding up FAR, FAR better. In fact, Tim sounds even better than his own late 20s early 30s voice.

a solo like painkiller really needs to stay true to the original imoripper always nails it though
It seems effortless for Tim and he doesnt smoke or do drugs. He does a light monster a day...he will be around a long time.
Eric Sligar yeah I doubt that the man has seen a needle or two in his day forsure
Tim Owens (vocal), Glen Drover (guitar), James LoMenzo (bass), Paul Bostaph (drum)
What was the band called?
James Lomenzo fro Whit Lion?
Unlike someone else. he's not rushing through words. like the song. hes doing it as it should be.
98. 02. 11.
listen to the shadows are alive.... that scream is amazing
Love those Delay/Reverb Effects ! You gotta have the right kind of voice for those to come alive.
they both sing it perfectly. It's just a matter of personal taste and I prefer Tims version a LOT.
ah man.. that voice.. that power
Ripper is amazing, Halford is the master of the universe, incredibles Heavy Metal soldiers, Metal, never, never,,,, NEVER DIES !!!
Awesome
This is a really powerful voice
This one performance among other available videos is really good.
Interesting to see what was half of Megadeth and what they've been doing since. And I gotta say, Ripper owns the Priest songs he sings. No disrespect to the Godfather Halford but on stage Owens delivers consistently.
Tremenda voz!
Ripper canta cada vez mejor lpm
HARD song to do!! You can hear the Fury in Tiptons playing on this song, Not this video but in the actual song. Killer tune
Grande ripper Owens...gran voz...extraordinario...
excellent performance
he is a beast , a true metal warrior
YES!
It’s not Tim’s, it’s just the best live version ever
I agree with you 💯 percent the Ripper Owens is amazing Vocalist and he's brutal..!!🤘🤘🤘😎😎🔱🔱⚜️⚜️
Imagine if Owens turns 60 years old and performs better live than Halford at the same age! Sounds realistic to me.
n4mel3ss συξξκμβδδρρ474
Halford came back to Priest in 2003. That's 16 years ago. Back then he sucked big time already during Painkiller!
Its amazing how much better Ripper sounds here than most of the time he did this song WITH Priest!!! I like how he actually enunciates the words hes singing, unlike his recordings on Live in London and '98 Meltdown
ripper killed it. I love halord but even in his prime he couldn't do this live.
Halford was already past his prime when he had to do this live. By about three years. Plus he had nodules... so he had a lot to contend with. Also, he was singing in standard tuning. This is downtuned, unfortunately I'm not musically literate enough to tell you what tuning.
Rico Salvaje what a load of bollocks 🖕😬🖕
Halford is the priest and the Ripper is the beast..!!🤟🤟🤟
I agree with you 💯 percent the Ripper is a beast..!!🤟🤟🤟😎😎🔱🔱⚜️⚜️

Super group or what!!
Remember that Halford has 16 years on this guy, Halford in his prime was unmatched, I was the
re.
Halford still sings better lol
Yes!
Not sure what Srsly means but I had stated earlier that Halford is much older and in his prime it is no contest.
Understood, that's why I stress the fact of the age difference.
God shut up
been saying it forever now, Ripper and KK need to get together
doing it
Much better than he used to be in my opinion
Awesome vocals as always but, am I the only one that thought the solo was dreadful? damn
It sounds worse because there's not a second guitarist to play rhythm so he's trying to do it all.
Ego problem.
@PumpkinPriest okok thanks my friend :)
Have a great day. Thanks!
4:35 AWESOME!
여전히 으마으마하네
It always seems like Owens is holding back. Knowing his capabilities, he just...he seems like he is always holding back. Is it just me?
Tims power is ridicolous! Over the top!
Glen Drover can play anything! Damn.
Ouch that solo 😬😬 😷
Bassist and Drummer are AWESOME, who are they ?
Glen Drover?
@Superapeaholic unfort you are right-btw it was the same in megadeath.
Probably the only painkiller cover I didn't hate. It's actually really good.
i want third album judas priest with tim ripper owens!!!
is this Paul Bostaph . . ? am i wrong ?
apostolis mcteg yes it is
is he glenn drover in the guitar right??
Paul Bostaph nailed it!!!
REMEMBER! RIPPER IS AN IMITATOR
Glen Drover has not yet learned play guitar solos, his style are a little bit humdrum
+Jhonatan Moreno youre right, hes a master at playing riffs but he needs more imagination when it comes to playing solos ...
Jhonatan Moreno kinda hard to play it right when the drummer is playing like he's on Crack ... we had a drummer that cracked out all the time that played every song so fast, the singer couldn't catch his breath, I couldn't solo and we had to play 60 songs a night instead of 40 ... we had enough and kicked him out
Glen Drover, or how to destroy a spectacular solo.
Those who say Rob cant sing like this check out his song RESURRECTION from Live Insurrection album ...It kicks ass to the moon ...
check out his song RESURRECTION from Live Insurrection album ...You'll eat your own words ...
проект называется HELL!
UP THE RIPPER
I think Drover did a good job, I know Tipton's style and I can identify his tone and solos amongst hundred other players, but I can't play what he plays note fot note for the life of me ! is it only me or does ripper do this song better than halford live?
Yep, he does. Halford is a great singer in the studio, but Tim owns it both on the records and on stage. I've never seen Rob singing Painkiller as well as Tim live.
nmlss Because Ripper has it tuned down so much. He doesn't sing as high as the original song.
nmlss
He sang quite well live around 03, as Halford the band. Other than that though, you're right.
Matt Kenney The band is tuned down because songs like 'Burn in Hell', which he sings in this same set, are downtuned.

Amazing performance!!!! Not only by Tim that was flawless, but by all the band!!!
Who were the musicians!?
The drummer is Paul Bostaph, i think.
James Lomenzo (Megadeth) in bass and Glen Drover (ex Megadeth) in guitar.
@@santiagoromeroalmarza1976 nice!! Thanks
The drummer is Shawn Drover
@@device1974 ex Megadeth...thanks
Has he ever tried performing this song in the original key?
dat solo..
Tim have very good voice ,color like Dio ... but more heavy \m/
Glen Dover on Guitar lml lml

Интересно они в Хабаровск приедут?
was that jake e lee on guitar badass solo
Νιναααααααααααααααααα Ripper REEEEEEEEEEEEE

@pspnonno Yes! Rob sing this song better. But this TIM version better then others TIM's vesions of this song! :)
Is that glen drover? And the bassist that also played with megadeth for a bit?
it's dropped maybe 2 tones?
LoMenzo lays a solid background and so does the drummer... but Drover is completely playin' something else than Painkiller.
Didnt that guitar player play for megadeth for an album?
Pfff...\m/ muy bueno!
martin sheen on the lead guitar, people!
Us glen drower?
@pspnonno i edit title :) Now all ok :)
Dont forget that Tim is imitating Robs voice...
That solo is painful to listen to.
it would have failed Guitar Hero on medium
he is a bumb
not is painful is painkiller
This sucks...
It seems to be the laws of the universe that if a vocalist ever performs Painkiller well live, the guitarist must screw up the solo. This guy will always be a "Bar" Singer, no more, he will always perform in pubs or bars doing Priest average covers, he will never do more than that
+Marco Peláez The thing is: This guy is not singing his style in this video. Listen to the Iced Earth's song Declaration Day. It is amazing. :)
