      @@bear-ms3ms To be fair, Becker did have a rasping backhand , but only when it mattered to him mentally. In fact, apart from physical movement, Becker almost had a complete game in terms of serve, volley and ability to hit off both flanks with authority. But he somehow never brought it upon himself to win many "winnable" matches. The fact that he played a bit better than Edberg in Grand Slams till the mid-90s and was still able to challenge the likes of Sampras in ATP Masters titles proves it. But he wasnt the fastest mover, and often seem to "react" to opponent's shots than work up a smarter tactical strategy. Edberg, to my mind, used his technical skills more effectively, namely the serve-volley combo and a generally more effective variation on the backhand. Although his awkward looking forehand was a more 'reliable' shot which he used to topspin and push opponents to the back of the court. It wasnt an offensive weapon though. He also moved much smoother than Becker and was generally a better coordinated player. But Becker underutilized his weaponry, for reasons unknown.

      To me, it was the best decision ever to slow down the courts and balls. Wimbledon was the most boring Major in the 90s. Just boom boom big serves. No real exciting points. Roland Garros and even more New York were much better. So now you have both serve n volley but also baseline duels in Wimbledon. The organizers knew why the changed the conditions. They are not dumb.

    • @michaelgarza8271
      @michaelgarza8271 Před 4 lety +4

      mtklaric, I agree completely. How can people say it was a good thing to slow down these courts? To annihilate so much tradition is just terrible. It's an abomination. As a player who was taught to serve and volley by a man who played Rod Laver, I just want to see the variety in the game. Serve and volley tennis was tennis! You had to be able to get to the net and take the ball out of the air! It's a great art.

    People bang on about how Federer and co would destroy Becker etc from the 80's but its such a redundant outlook, because tennis was still evolving, and quickly. Just look at the Becker from 88 to the Becker playing Sampras in Hamburg '96, Becker himself had evolved and his power increased along with racquet technology improvements. Sampras was the best of his generation and Becker just about could match him. When Federer and Nadal came along they then had to match the likes of Sampras, and having started with superior racquet technology to any prior generation, blossomed far quicker than any other generation, so naturally most of today's crop would therefore be able to beat older generations. But to simply state Oh they played so rubbish in those days, Fed would smash them is somewhat childish and lacking in perspective, in my opinion.

      halffulltome Maybe, but I doubt it. Federer played in the weakest era professional tennis ever had, Becker in one of the strongest. Federer almost never had to face players with variety and shotmaking skills like Becker had. Today, you have basically three or four guys that are good enough to beat the top guys in major tournaments, in Becker's time you had ten or fifteen.
      That's why all those records and numbers are essentially rather unimpressive: If the general level of play on the tour is so weak, SOMEBODY has to win all those slams, don't you think?

Was there 10 or 15 guys capable of winning Wimbleodon in 89 I doubted. I can literally count them with 1 hand. Becker 2 time champ r/p in 88, Edberg defending champ, Lendl No,1 at the time. A distance 4th is Mac. Name those 6 or 11 players that you think are genuine contenders for 89 Wimbledon.

      Today's racquets and strings create more top spin so it's easy to produce passing shots. But the main reason is WB changed the grass and surface became much slower. So, 2001s was Sampras x Ivanizevic, two serve-volleyrs and next year, Nalbadian x Hewitt two baseliners...Carpet surfaces were also very fast but we're banned from professional tour. They standardized the surfaces speed, so the player's style became standardized as well...
