  • This is a more detailed continuation of aligning an FM radio with an oscilloscope and sweep generator. It's a bit long, but does show a worse case alignment.
    I have never had to align a radio this messed up! Typically you only have to tweak it a bit to get it aligned so watch me totally mess up a perfectly aligned radio.....and try to put it back!

    I've only recently came across your channel and must say how clear and detailed your explanations are when demonstrating the technics of servicing these vintage pieces of equipment. It's great to be shown exactly how to set up the test equipment and how to use it. So many techs who make these similar videos sadly make the assumption that the viewer knows all this stuff and proceed to show and talk about "what they've done" rather than what they're "doing". this has been great, thank you for sharing your knowledge.

    I know this video was made a while age, BUT it is just what I needed to know to understand how to do this. Thank you so much for makeing this. I know it must have taken a lot of time.

    Josh - I got 40 minutes + of exercise on the bike and thoroughly enjoyed your step-by-step alignment process. My experience with FM alignment is limited and dated, so this adds much value. Thank you for taking time to publish your practices. All the best. Don

    Very good video. I am slowly developing the confidence I need to try this.

    Good step by step guide! Actually seeing the oscope and having the patterns explained really help me to understand the process. Great explanation of what you were going to do and what the objective was....explaining the basic concept of an fm signal and how it is received was really good! Thanks for sharing this....Im sure you are going to get a lot of views!!! Larry

    Thank you so much for this beautiful video. I request you to please make a video on a transistor stereo FM radio alignment using sweep generator & RF Marker & oblige. Regards!

    I found this after doing an alignment on the same radio. I don't have an analog scope or an old sweep generator. I have various function generators and a signal generator. I couldn't figure out how to set it up with a scope. (how to set the scope up and with a sweep and all that). I just did my with a spectrum analyzer with tracking generator and it was easy....the only problem is A14 and A15 because you can't get the s-curve. (atleast I don't think so) So I used the steps for the signal generator and vtvm. I gotta say though that the spectrum analyzer makes a much clearer representation of whats going on...atleast to my mind.

      That's great. Truth be known, after I remove the equipment, I still have to touch it up br ear. Anything that connects to RF messes with the signal.

    Thank you for this video. I have found that if you have a somewhat good signal with poor or very poor audio, I do the what you did last-- first. That is I tweak the cans by ear first and then use the equipment to set get the best O-scope readings and then again tweak by ear. Carl

      Carl, just to prove your point, I did a complete alignment by ear only and it worked great.

      So I am guessing that you do the tweaking with the volume up on a good local station?

    • @ke0nc
      @ke0nc Před 2 lety

      Yes Carl! Thank you for saying something. By ear first, and then fine tune the waveform with the oscilloscope. That is so much quicker.

      @@jdmccorful Use a signal generator so that you can control the strength.

    this has to be the best FM alignment video I have seen and to a complete rookie, this is incredibly helpful. explaining the theory of operation, what you are doing, and what the scope is showing is something a lot of other videos lack. I have a question about the signal being injected. Is it possible to do an alignment like this with an RF generator (like an EICO 324) that doesn't have the sweep and marker capability? I'm thinking yes, but it would be more difficult.

    • @tinkeringwithelectronics
      @tinkeringwithelectronics  Před 2 měsíci

      You certainly can do it with an RF signal generator, if it's not too far of out of alignment. most or not very far out of alignment if out at all and can be aligned effectively just by ear even. Also remember everything you connect to the circuit will load the circuit and eventually you'll have to tweak a little by ear anyway. Good luck

    Great instructive video. This is the first time I am aligning a Zenith. I couldn’t figure out how to get to the bottom adjustment in the cans. Now I know. I have a digital Siglent scope and signal generator. I am not sure I’ll be able to set up like you did. Question…. What are you measuring on the Y axis of your scope. Is it the DC voltage at the marker which is the DC voltage at 10.7 MHz?

    Hi, I am really in shock after watching your "great invention" . I have been working with tv's and radios for a long time, and always had a problem with the set on the workbench, but after seen this video, I am surprised on how easy could be to build something to handle the set while repairing or adjusting it. Can you please share more information about this great tool? like measures and the most important, how can it hold the radio or whatever you are working on. Holes in the chassis? pressing the chassis with the red handlers? Please it could be a great help for people in the repair/restoration team, like you and me. Thanks

      LOL! This couldn't be simpler! All you're seeing is 2 piece of aluminum channel. I just drilled holes in the side of the channels and treaded for a 1/4" bolt that is back treaded with a nut. Don't allow the bolts to protrude through the channel, this will interfere with the chassis being mounted. I added spaces between the nut and the from to allow for stuff like the dial to clear. This is all mounted in a wooden frame. The extra vertical holes in the wooden frame allow for bigger chassis'. As far as mounting the chassis, I utilize the same screws and holes that hold the chassis in the case. Nothing fancy here. I just used the manufacturers threaded mounting holes to hold it to the channel. You'll find that just a few holes are needed in the channel to adapt to most chassis.

    I am trying to tweak the FM section of a radio for the 1st time. My oscope is not making any sense. Any place I can post some screen shots with my setup to see if you could give some advice?

    11:33 Looks like there's an old paper cap at the top right of the chassis, did you end up replacing that later on?
