  • Logan and I already got together and did a commentary on the survival expedition we shot in Ecuador but this is actually the very first Survivorman and Son we ever filmed. We didnt know at the time that Logan was suffering from Leukaemia (Thankfully he has fully recovered and is now super healthy 8 years later! ) For more updates, follow my Facebook page!

I know exactly what Logan was going through. I was diagnosed with Leukemia several years ago & my energy level was reduced significantly. I would get tired by doing simple chores that I would ordinarily be able to do with ease. Fortunately I am now in remission & back to normal. I am glad to hear that Logan is also.

Hey Les, I've been dealing with multiple long-term illnesses for years now, and when things like MS attacks are happening, it really helps to have something to occupy my mind, so I'm not dwelling on symptoms. I could never thank you enough for making all of this free for us to watch. Whether I'm dealing with MS attacks, pain, or just trying to stave off depression, these shows, and in turn you, literally make my moment to moment life more tolerable.
    Thank you man.

If you ever get your son on for a commentary, this is the one I'd love to see most. Especially hearing him recount tipping the kayak and being a picky eater in the bush. I'd love to hear his perspective on it, like where was he emotionally before shooting and how the series either helped or hindered his growth. The survivorman and son series was such a brilliant idea with the best possible timing.

Tofino is My home & stomping ground. I've built 3 large family sized cabins throughout Clayoquot Sound, all of which are still there and hidden within dense foliage just meters from the ocean. I lived off grid for 20+ years, to the extent that the line between 'Camping' and 'living' has become blurred, as I am completely at home in the temperate rain forests of Vancouver Island. Techniques applicable to regions outside the Coastal temperate rain forests native to Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte's quite often aren't compatible within these regions, except perhaps on a beach. During the rainy season, even the most seasoned 'sylvanaut' could enter into a deadly life and death situation in minutes or meters from their dwelling place, when plunged into ABSOLUTE blackness, and freezing torrential rain & wind which can continue unabated for weeks even months. EVERYTHING is wet or damp your house, car, clothes, EVERYTHING. Only a wood stove or fireplace equipped space or electric dry heat can ward off the cold damp. Gas does not work.
Red tide blooms are rare, and when there is any they are quite visible, and are a seasonal occurrence. Pretty much everything in that ocean is edible, if it isn't palatable. That fish Logan speared is a small Black cod. Good eating but quite bony. They can get pretty big. To fillet -Hold the tail, placing your blade in front of your hand sharp side toward the head- and while holding the blade firmly, PULL the fish into the blade, working the fish back and forth (side to side ways) keeping the blade at a slight inclined angle toward, and cutting along the spine. Do not be afraid to make tea with spruce needles, dandelion root and blackberry leaves. All are readily available. When one becomes skilled enough, and familiar with an environment, it is no longer required to be in continuous "survival" mode, as that will become automated. Most commonly the condition of being lost, starving, and in trouble in the wilderness is almost entirely psychological. The only things that are serious, is staying warm enough to avoid hypothermia, or better-- Pretty easy to do. And staying hydrated. I like to relax, still my mind, to quiet, stopping "internal dialogue" so that I can significantly pay attention not only to what is there to see, but perhaps more important at certain times is that which is NOT seen. But THAT is another story,,,

To this day it is the ONLY ring tone my phone has and the only one I have ever downloaded. Trust me, I get some looks when the opening yell starts then breaks into the bass riff. Makes me smile every time.

I remember back in the early 2000's I got off work at the fire station and when I arrived home walking through my living room I saw you on TV being watched by my wife. I asked her what she was watching. She said this crazy guy goes into remote forest locations and survives 7 days without anything. I remember that I thought it was a fake show. I grew up spending weekends in the woods with 6 cans of ravioli and a gallon jug of water. I also remember thinking without anything would be impossible. I took a shower and finished the show and thought you looked pretty rough to be faking it. That was your very first TV episode. I told her to set it to record. The next week you were in the Arizona desert I believe. I watched the episode and realized you were real at what you were doing. I never missed another episode. Several years later I went out on an evening deer hunt in East Texas with my 80 some odd year old grandfather. He dropped me off and I walked about 1.5 miles into the forest on a four-wheeler trail. The trail took several turns. At the end of my hunt I left at dark. I made the mistake of not checking the batteries in my flashlight, The night was moonless and foggy. On the way out of the woods I made a wrong turn and walked another 1,5 miles away from the road. By this time it was around 9PM. I realized if I walked any further I could get into serious trouble. I found a huge oak tree and sat down by it. I started running through my mind and you came across the mind. I wondered what would Les do? I got up and gathered all of the freshly fallen oak leaves and built a huge pile. I sat in the pile then covered myself with leaves very high above me, effectively making a cocoon. About 4 hours later my grandfather had been trying to find me for hours. He told me after a while that he figured I must have turned right instead of left at that crossroad. He drove out of the area and around to were the trail came back out and started honking his horn over again. While laying under the leaves I thought that I heard a slight horn noise. got up and climbed a hill and could tell the direction from the faint horn honk. I gathered my things and started following the sound. After about another hour I made it out to my grandfather. He was so worried and I was so embarrassed. Every time I hear Less Stroud or Survivorman I remember using your tactics in my own mini survival situation. So all these years later I say thank you Les. Your skills that I learned from you helped me. So again I say TY for the lessons and the many stories I have read about people who you have saved their lives from the lessons you taught us. I also say thankyou for creating a genre on TV that brought a lot of entertainment that I have enjoyed through the years. None or as good and authentic as yours, but entertaining none the less. Thank you Les Stroud for your wonderful contribution to the world.
