I raised my son on a farm and I taught him as a toddler to carry a stick with him at all times. We owned approximately 200 birds from ostriches to fighting roosters. One day a rooster tried to flog my son and I actually had to go save my rooster. After that when my son came out of the house that rooster would run and stand beside me 😅
We carried a whiffle ball bat. The noise scares them bad as the whack.

When I was about 4, I forgot my Buford Pusser schitt stick going into our pasture one morning.
Our huge Rhode Island Red rooster attacked me almost instantly and spurred me through my upper lip, sinking his spur almost 1/2" into the gum. I believe he was going for my eyes, but missed due to me falling backward over a cast-iron wash pot we used for boiling water when plucking our yearly fryer crop.
We had him with dumplings the next day.
