Schizophrenia Complex, presents a clear-eyed and compassionate understanding of our encounters with severe mental illness.
The submergence in unconscious chaos that defines schizophrenia triggers negative emotions in others-yet Jung on psychosis showed that we are different from those patients only in degree.
Significantly his Word Association Test proved that the unconscious influences everyone’s daily life in multiple ways.
Moreover, Jung’s psychiatric work with psychotic convalescents led to his ground-breaking discovery of the collective unconscious, humanity’s mythopoetic substrate.
Understandably we shy away from people in psychosis because they are living out our own radical and universal mad parts. But, instead of turning from the schizophrenia complex, we can acknowledge our shared darkness and stretch into connection.
Then, as Eve Maram’s story depicts, we may find eros has the power to constellate hope, courage, and tenacity in the face of chaos, helping us discover that we are more than before.
Here’s the dream we analyze at the end of our episode:
“I am about to play tennis on a public outdoor court with 4 or 5 other guys and a coach. As we are walking onto the courts, I ask “are there any tennis prodigies from the neighborhood who play here?” Coach says no and I am a little disappointed. We spread out on the courts to get ready for a drill, and I step into a big pile of dog poo. I am disgusted, and I yell out to the other guys. They don’t hear me but they do notice that I am walking off the court. Just outside of the court, I stomp and scrape my shoe in a small grassy area, but I can’t get the dog poo off. It is clinging to my shoe with claws-it is actually a furry brown creature. At first, I think it is dead but as i stomp it comes alive and starts to fight back.”

Grew up with a paranoid schizophrenic father. So many triggers and healings in this talk.

It is heroic to revisit and process such painful memories. My thoughts are with you ~ Joseph

    Thank-you for talking about this.
Parts of this were pretty devastating to me. Referring to antipsychotics as “affect hammers” was one of the best descriptions I’ve ever heard. The soul pain from them is awful.
I loved the part where Joseph explained the differences between Dionysus/Apollo and Dionysus/Saturn. It really rings true from my experience and helps to settle some of that heaviness. It reminded me of a Celine Dion song called “refuse to dance” which my mum used to listen to when I was younger.
I am no longer taking strong doses of these medications but they have left me with deep creases of sadness but I like to think it makes me more grateful for many things and I relish moments of brightness and Joy.

As a kid I would watch the movie Mr. Magoo. After listening to this it came to mind, I haven't seen it in years. But I think his experience is comparable to someone with psychosis, as he goes about life in an unaware state

If Schizophrenia is when dream time and reality collide..what's happening when someone does a mind altering substance ( the hallucinations) ??
There are many cases of these substances leading to an onset of schizophrenia , But aren't doing these substances giving an experience of something similar to what happens when someone is diagnosed with schizophrenia? The dream time and real time collision ?
Also what about all those gurus , religious teachers and many religions infact who say " the world is a dream" ? Just curious..
I believe different cultures treat schizophrenia differently.
    Thanks.

That part where she mentions how " LOVE " helps can be seen in the movie " A beautiful mind ". I hope it's the same thing.

For me athletics meet aesthetics in probing one's agencies when swinging ANYTHING!. There's an art to cultivating a sense of humerus which is a meditation on advocating for its VOICE. How else can you come to articulate what you've been numb and dumb to? My upper arm now has the upper hand. Analysis is to break apart and soften ONLY if yov take the trouble to LISTEN which is to love and affirm. I have a more rounded image of auto-eroticism from my journaling practice.

Thank you for this talk. Have you folks ever thought of filming yourselves and providing video in addition to the audio? I personally would enjoy that.

6:30 Is this related to some of the Ego's libido being stolen away by the Schizophrenia, and as opposed to a psychogenic depression, there is that element that in order to face that Schizophrenia one NEEDS that stolen away libido to begin with. You are kind of "soft-locked" as we call it in videogames: A situation where a game remains apparently playable, but further progress is impossible, typically due to a design flaw or glitch. I remember reading that electro-shock therapy is used to jolt a person into a new psychic condition. Perhaps electroshock would try and shock that sealed off libido back into the ego.
This apparently playable situation, when the Ego wants to go through and regain its lost libido, is really like, if it you think about it again in video-game-like terms, a rocket in propulsion shooting straight into a wall, swaying to and fro but not getting anywhere. I think of libido as like the Magical Bag of Wind from Spongebob: czcams.com/video/Tjze3M1Y6fg/video.html

Surprised that no one associated the word "underfoot" to the dream. The dreamer may be stepping into something that not only repels him but makes it clear it's there for the duration. The marriage? The dog? Commitment to something other than his own maintenance of being the big frog in a small pond (his occupation) doesn't sit well with him. He'd rather be on the court engaging with others who meet his measure.
