  • Take a ride on the Galloping Goose, seven operation railcars that ran through the rugged San Juan mountains from 1931 to 1952. Carrying cargo, mail, and passengers, these "Motors" connected Dolores, Telluride, and Ridgeway with many locations along the Rio Grand Southern Railroad. Discover their mechanical and weather-related adventures, learn how they have been preserved, and why they attract visitors from around the world.

I grew up in western Colorado. Listening to stories about the geese. And CW McCall.
    Love the backstory.

Bless the volunteers and those that funded saving these historic machines . They may be updated for safety and codes ,May they never ever disappear or be forgotten .

I remember sitting in a Galloping Goose in Colorado as a boy in the 1960's. It was basically a wreck, but I was fascinated.

I remember the interior looked like it had once been an expensive car, I remember seeing "Pierce Arrow " on the radiator. I didn't understand why it had been turned into this strange looking machine. It was sitting forlornly in a back corner of the museum. It was literally falling apart, rotting interior, rust, resident mice and all in the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, CO.
Apparently this was before they were valued, and restored. I seem to remember it was Motor 2.

Great video of the Galloping Geese. I had visited the Colorado Railroad museum on August 18,1974 and had seen two of the Galloping Geese there and 2 years later when I had visited Knott’s Berry Farm I seen Galloping Goose number 3. It would be nice for Model Railroad setups to have the Galloping Goose to their set up.

Hi Christopher, I am current building a HO standard & HOn3 narrow gauge model train layout. I have a Galloping Goose that will run on it. I do periodic short videos on the progress on my CZcams channel. It will be a few months before I'm ready to run much of the narrow gauge trains, but I should have sone of the dual gauge track in soon and will be using the Goose to test some of it.
