Never go.... full Joe Rogan.
Great analysis. Two points about lions though that seemed to be overlooked - 1) lions typically hunt in packs so the generalisation that they can single-handedly take down large prey may be overstated, and 2) it's often not the male lions that hunt but the females, so their application of hunting practice in a combat situation may also be overstated.
In a fight to the death, intelligence doesn't matter. Exhibit A: Tyson vs Einstein

Finally after all these years the internet has produced the discussion that addresses the question that it was ultimately created to answer. Thank you, Lex.

Grizzly wins all day

@@Bigbanks589definitely.....giant claws, teeth, bite force, resistance to injury wins the day....for the most Rogan, useless, and dumb question on the interweb
@horacio-ho3bf lol definitely
rogan had a wildlife expert and gorillas are basically useless bc they can't handle predators that see them as prey. Leopards will kill gorillas every now and then even.
Grizzlys are Insane, they grow up fighting and boxing other grizzlies, can weigh over an actual Ton
When animals like these are Healthy . There is recorded on a few occasions a 700 pound male Lion has Killed Grizzlies over 100p pounds . They have been having to survive Man maid wars , Greed . Peaceful animals that deserve peace and relaxation 😀
I'm quite shocked that they didn't really address Defense. The bear's loose skin and fatty deposits offers great protection against claws and teeth, whereas the lean build of the lion and ape make them extremely vulnerable to the bears claws.
they have no idea what they are talking about. If they saw this video they would never even think to compare a bear to a lion czcams.com/video/kccJfnfFLC0/video.html
@@arazhajiyev236 Damn! Thanks for that. Where I live in Alaska we have many many bears, especially when the salmon are running. It's not unusual to see scores of bears feeding a the weir gate here in Valdez. I've seen many fights but nothing, nothing like this!
Cats have loose skin. Bears are more durable because they have more fat & thicker fur but cats have loose skin too. That's how they can fight & hunt without injury.
Apes however have tight skin, so the gorillas are toast lol
@@Wxpt1010 I agree 100%!
Lions have a thick and long mane that protects the head, neck, back, chest and part of the abdomen.
Here are some key takeaways from the conversation between Lex Fridman and John Danaher about who would win in a fight between a grizzly bear, silverback gorilla, and lion:
- They discuss the importance of several factors like intelligence, weight, strength, bite force, claws, aggression, etc. Danaher argues you can't just rely on intuitions about which is most formidable.
- Danaher outlines his framework for evaluating combat effectiveness based on skills, attributes, experience, and specific elements like ability to initiate, disengage, endure fights, and efficiently finish opponents.
- He argues gorillas, though strong, have little real combat experience compared to lions who regularly take down very dangerous prey like cape buffalos. Leopards have even been documented killing gorillas.
- For lion vs bear, he believes neither could easily kill the other - lions can't strangle bears who can stand up, and bears can't easily pin lions. It would come down to endurance which favors the bear, but lions are less risk-averse.
- In a neutral cage fight, Danaher slightly favors the bear over the lion due to size/endurance, but in the wild the lion would likely intimidate a risk-averse bear.
- Danaher clearly believes the lion is overall the most effective combatant compared to a silverback gorilla or grizzly bear due to skill, experience, aggression, intelligence, etc.
Good summary, thanks!
leopards documented killing gorillas is based on gorilla in leopard scat, which could be from many things....a ambush on a sleeping gorilla, an infant, a wounded gorilla many factors. God I would love to see more stuff on Gorillas, how they actually look using full force in a fight, because when they fight with other gorillas from what i understand they arent using full strength at all I wonder what their strategy would be, when they flail their arms they dont look that crazy powerful but that could be me being stupid, if they could direct a full force punch like a human they could obliterate a lot of animals easily. If they could grapple another animal and get a solid bite its game over with a bite force like that, if somehow a gorilla was trained in a grappling form god they would be insane with their build
@@SuperThesavage Not at all, Silverbasck bodies have also been found.

I love that Danaher already knows all these stats about animals and a whole philosophy on combat/war. Of course he does.
I bet he uses it similar to how some actors will imitate animal mannerisms for roles (ex. Brando inspired by gorillas for Street Car, Jim Carrey with birds for Ace Ventura), John probably tries to see movements and techniques that could be tested in his classes.

He got a few things wrong, but he's knowledgeable enough. Grizzly wins all day long though.

RIP Gordon Ryan, I respect him for having the courage to die in dignity against the Lion and the bear.

Hands down one of the funniest and most educational videos about a useless question that every kid and ... Well adult has always asked himself. Fantastic sat through the whole thing.
On the topic of bear vs lion this question has been answered, and John was heading in the right direction, but not far enough. During the California gold rush there were animal fights set up to entertain prospectors. The audience quickly got tired of the bears easily killing everything put before them, caribou, bulls, etc. So they shipped in African lions as they thought they might have a chance, and while they looked and sounded impressive, the bears easily crushed their skulls, and the lions had no way of attacking the bears effectively. A bear's hide and bones are both far too thick for a lion to damage them significantly.
Also John needs to respect moose more, a moose is significantly scarier than a cape buffalo. Cape buffalo are herd animals, scared of being isolated, always looking for safety in numbers, a moose can and will charge an adult male salmon fed kodiak bear without a second thought if it looks at it sideways.
Finally, the correct response. I can now rest easy.
Dear Reginald Benedict Victor Hugo Ashford,
I appreciate your educated response based on data rather than imaginative hypotheticals.
John brought up the data point that the Roman’s reported that a tiger (which outweighs a lion significantly), would kill a lion. However the matchup of a costal brown bear (i.e. Grizzly) vs a Siberian tiger was not discussed.
If John gave a slight edge to the grizzly over a lion, but we know a tiger beats a lion, what would win between a tiger and grizzly?
Thank you in advance for your thoughtful response. It will certainly allow me to sleep.
Cordially,
Mike
@@mikemoriarty6061 I think a large male kodiak bear would still beat a large male siberian tiger. The strength difference between them is just too great I think.
The heaviest siberian tigers are only just barely the same weight as the very smallest male kodiak bears. But the largest Kodiak bears are more than twice the weight of the largest siberian tigers.
You wouldn't expect a 60kg man to have a chance against a 120kg man in a fight given a similar amount of training and musculature, I don't see why it wouldn't hold true for these animals either.

Also remember Brown Bears out competed the American Lion.

a gorilla CANNOT lift 10x its weight, its pure prapaganda that has been repeated so much that its believed true, i would bet it can't lift even 5x its weight, gordon ryan beats a chimp easy, chimps destroy their owners who are untrained and not ready for it, an average male chimp is 100 lb and p4p 1.5 x stronger then man, at 217 gordon is stronger, he can train for a chimp watching their fights
Ya ive heard from a couple people that he has a pretty good knowledge base on a vast majority of subjects, Gordon spoke on it the first time on rogan i believe.
Only thing he missed is how thin and tightly fixed in place gorilla's skin really are compared to Lion's and bear's loose flexible skin meaning gorilla's skin wont protect anything beneath in fighting against claws scenario, while lion's skin move with the opponent's claws upon impact which causes less tear one and second since the skin moves upon impact anything beneath will not recieve traumatic full impact of the blow and so less likely to tear

He forgets that bears fight each other very often. I think in this way he underestimates the bear’s ability to fight and kill. Add that to the fact that grizzly bears are massive and have extremely thick fat layers, you get a resilient animal. The reason bears back out from conflict is because they are primarily scavengers.
Excellent points. I’ve never seen an animal fight the way grizzlies do. As much as I love big cats, I can’t imagine a scenario where a Lion could defeat a Grizzly.

Let's be realistic here... A fully grown brown bear (Kodiak for example) weighs 2 times more than a lion or a tiger and 3 times more than a guerilla. Bears are also very good at wrestling. Have you ever seen a bear fight? They are much much faster and agile than most people think because it is counterintuitive for an animal this heavy and full of muscle to be agile, but they really are.
There is no realistic way for a tiger to quickly kill a big bear. The bear is too tough, its nech is too thick, its body will withstand the swipes of the tiger. The fight will very quickly turn into a wrestling match. The bear will simply overpower and outlast the tiger. Bears can fight each other for a long time. Fights between big cats usually only last seconds and they are exhausted.
Bears are built like bulldozers. They can take a lot more damage and deliver a lot more damage that a big cat or a primate can.
A gorilla doesn't have the weapons, experience, size and killing instinct to win a fight vs a big bear (or a big cat).
The lion and tiger would turn into kuddly kittens when confronted with a much bigger and much tougher predator like a bear.
A full-grown male bear (Grizzly, Kodiak or Polar) will absolutely devastate everything else.
100%.
Absolutely, also bringing up bears not engaging a wolverine is not a valid argument…look what small weasels let alone honey badger (still smaller than wolverine) does to packs of lions. Also there are instances of smaller Asian brown bears driving Siberian tigers off their kills to n the wild…the rock paper scissors of intimidation in the wild seems a different matter than who kills who.

Lex really thought that intelligence would win the day, what he seemed to struggle with was the fact that there is a lot more to survival than just intelligence.
Instinct has always been the guiding light to survival.
Intelligence is knowing when to fight or hide/walk away.
Intelligence is quite literally the main reason, if not the only reason why we humans as a species have survived long enough to make it to the point we are at here today.
A gorilla would have a chance of winning under these conditions:
1) There are weapons
2) There is at least a month to prepare and the gorilla has a trainer teaching him every day how to use those weapons to fight a lion and bear

This ended on the perfect note. Whoever cut it right there is a legend.
Serious question: if someone like Gordon Ryan was magically put into the perfect rear naked choke position on a gorilla, isnt there a reasonable chance he could choke it out?
It seems that a deep choke with legs wrapped tight around the waist of the gorilla would be difficult for it to get out of, or does the gorilla simply pry his arms/legs off his body them rip his limbs off?
(Im ignoring the difficulty of Ryan being able to even take the gorillas back to begin with)
I recall that in the UK panel program "QI", there was an item about the enthusiasm in the US to hold contests between the King Predator of the New World (the grizzly bear) and the King Predator of the Old World (the lion). And that the bear won each contest easily.
I started off listening to this question thinking how ridiculous and silly it was. As the conversation evolved it was clear this conversation was about gaining an insight into how John Danaher's tactical mind works. Such a great conversation about something I would have otherwise thought mundane. Very entertaining thank you.
Joe Rogan has been seething ever since he Found out that this discussion took place without him
Tactics are irrelevant.
Even if the gorilla is twice as smart as either of the other, it’s not smart enough to override its biology and not go “apeshit”
Despite being stronger, it’s not going to plan or strategize. It’s going to run in like it does vs other gorillas and it’s going to get mauled.
My friend, a man is always still a man. This was a conversation about Gorillas Vs Lions Vs Bears 😂
When it came to Gordon fighting a bear, i started to cry laughing. More discussions like this please.
You don't think there's any ground position? Haha
@@tullymunro7696 xDD no human can defeat a fully healthy grizzly bear with their bare hands
what is he gonna do? a heel hook? :DD made me cry
This was by far the best video I have watched for the second time... The ending was priceless..... LMAO....
Because gorillas aren't carnivores I would imagine that actually explains their bite force.
Since they have more access to food and dont have to take time to hunt they exercise their jaws much more often. Also because of their intelligence and tool usage they probably experiment with chewing sticks and other hard materials.
Two adults seriously discussing such a ridiculous topic one of the world’s biggest potcast is among the most fun things I’ve seen recently. Lex’s ligtheartedly self-critiquing attitude about posing these ridicuolus but nontheless world changing questions is amazing.
Oh, it's a potcast! That explains it.
It's only a ridiculous topic because the answer is obvious to anyone with an IQ over 80.

Is it a polar bear?
I can't believe I sat through 30 minutes of this 😂😂 great conversation very entertaining
Podcast are so famous just because they help us answer all the most nonsensical or weird scenario WE ALL HAVE MADE UP IN OUR MIND but nowhere to look answer from but an expert 😅
John D wearing a rash vest everywhere he goes is just too funny
The last 5 min were epic !!!
I can only worship John Danaher for being educated, analytical, reasonable, sociable and truthful to the max - and funny to listen to on top of it. All hail to the coach of coaches!🙏
Fascinating discussion and an interesting topic all around. For what it's worth, my two cents on the subject was that the guest was discounting the experience gained when bears fought within their own species for food, mating or territory. It's true that bears would rather avoid a fight, at times, but bears will also defend themselves and their young against other species of bear, cougar, and wolverine.
These guys need to consult tier zone for this discussion
