    Something I learned from my Granny. Old women..Granny included...often left deco stick pins in hats, brooches on dresses, jackets, and coats. They often hid valuables in old shoes, glass jars and tin cans in the ground and the hollows of trees. One person's trash is another treasure.

I would have put them on something like Craig's List with a time limit for picking them up, being clear that they would need to be taken straight to a carpet cleaner. Alex, just an FYI, people always say there is nicotine staining on walls, furniture etc., it's not the nicotine doing the staining, it's the actual smoke itself. Nicotine is the addictive part of tobacco smoke. It is colorless and odorless. As for the rugs in the living room, if they were quality needlepoint, taking them to a good rug cleaner will remove all residue. They can be very valuable. In the case of the early Disney toy cradle with some mold on it, using three parts water and one part bleach will remove all the mold. Disney collectors would snap it up in an instant.

    • @expatannie6958
      @expatannie6958 Před rokem +1

      Yep, you're right, it's the "tar," which is not actually tar, but a compound of various chemicals and carcinogens, that causes the staining. The tar is also what causes cancer, nicotine itself does not.
      That being said, even though I am an ex-smoker, I am shocked by the condition of those keys. Did this person chain smoke for 60 years and never once clean the keys? It looks like a beautiful piano otherwise. Hope it can be thoroughly cleaned and restored.

      @decemberschild1504 Před rokem +2

      I worked in a hospital cleaning equipment. Mold on smooth surfaces can be killed with some household products, but the spores are a different matter. Spores (reproductive structures) have a kind of shell to enable them to survive in bad conditions. It requires heat, toxic chemicals and pressure to kill many species of spores.

    We rented a house of a heavy smoker (when he died the son, who was a friend of ours, offered it to us at low rent.) We were in a 2 bedroom apartment with our 3 boys. The house had 3 bedrooms and a pool. Anyway the work of getting the nicotine out of that house was monumental. We washed and rewashed walls, smooth ceilings, and carpets for over a year. We painted the popcorn ceilings and walls. But when we had the swamp cooler running you could smell that house a block away. I don't even want to go into the condition of the floor around the toilet. The owner and his friends were drunks who hung out there at his bar. We trashed the whole bar setup (picture 70s era dark brown corkboard and smoked mirrors) and reclaimed the dining room. It was gross at first. But we made it into a home. Lived there almost 5 years.

    Alex, when we sold my husband's parent's house all the asbestos abatement company was required to do was tent the part of the basement that had the asbestos tiles and remove them, ( just 2 bedrooms) They had a special (I think it was negative air pressure box) and didn't cost a whole lot. I always say that if a house has good bones it is most likely worth saving.

Who played the piano, or smoked like a chimney. Who was going to cash in on all the Cabage Patch Dolls. Who was the budding ballerina artist . Who had a dollhouse. Liked teacups and men's magazines? On and on. What happened to them all. Floods,Mice and spiders...Thr rise and fall of little empires.
