  • Edible oil prices have been rising steadily due to the recent geopolitical turmoil in Ukraine. India which imports almost two-thirds of all its edible oils is struggling to keep prices in check. In episode 1011 of #CutTheClutter, Shekhar Gupta talks about what India can do to combat this sudden price rise and why edible oils can dent India's hopes of being food secure.

I would to make some comments:
    1) palm oil is the most consumed edible oil is not only due to its odourless characteristics but mainly due to legislation in some countries limiting the content of trans fat due to health reasons. Palm oil has been used in industrial food due to this legislation i.e. health concerns of other oils. (palm oil just like coconut oil is a stable oil and does not require hydrogenation. Hydrogenation process is used to prolong shelf life of other oils such as soy, corn, sunflower, rapeseed etc which will produce trans fat. Trans fat is bad for health).
    2) the shortage of palm oil from Malaysia is not due to export tax. Export tax will increase the price a bit but will not reduce its quantity. The real problem in Malaysia is that they have severe labour shortage to harvest the oil palm fruit due to covid-19 restrictions on foreign workers. Almost the entire harvesters are foreign workers including lakhs from India.
    3) there are 2 types of palm oils i.e. palm oil and palm kernel oil (derived from mesocarp and kernel respectively).
    4) oil palm is the most productive oil plant. On the same land area, oil palm could produce as much as 6 to 10 more oil than other oil plants. And it produces oil all year round.

If you allow GM, you allow your food to be owned by corporations, whose only concern is profit - you have no resilience, no independence. Think twice and research GM - check out UK NGOGM Watch for high quality research in this area. The US companies who own patents on GM do not care for your health, and you can be held to ransom by these companies once they own seed. There is a huge opportunity of growing edible oil seeds in India. Also a good time to reduce oil and go on a diet.

Healthy economy need self reliant less dependent citizens who do not depend on pension, ration, ashraya, health scheme, water harvest own water, use solar, recycle waste, water, grow garden etc. such citizens should be identified given spl status. govt should spend more on result oriented positive growth schemes. even should regulate population

  • @yerramillivenkatanarayanam7140

Sir, The fossil fuels can't be produced in excess of what is available in the Earth's Womb, hence for fulfilling the country's needs it is essential to import from other countries. But in case of edible oils , we can be self sufficient within a decade , if we encourage farmers to grow Palm trees by way of giving more incentives (as India is having climatic conditions especially in southern India ,similar to Malasia and suit for intensive Palm cultivation) . Only thing needed is Govt's strong will in this regard. Regarding the GM foods like Soya bean oil, certainly some are carcinogenic, and care should be taken by Govt. before it is permitted, unless it was proved otherwise. For growing ground nuts, sun flower crops , Govt should encourage as a crop rotation to increase the fertility of land and to boost up the Oil production.
