  • It was bound to happen, The Puppetoons meet Gumby in Arnold Leibovit’s 1987 tribute to director/animator George Pal. The film features 11 of the shorts Pal made between 1933 and 1948, some of the most charming animation ever produced - the essence of childhood fantasy. The classic shorts are supplemented by newly animated wraparound segments featuring Gumby, Pokey, Arnie the Dinosaur, the Pillsbury Doughboy, Speedy Alka-Seltzer, and a Gremlin or two! Art Clokey supplied the Gumby and Pokey figures and provided the voice of Pokey. Gumby animator Peter Kleinow animated the characters, Gene Warren Jr. directed the animation, and Leibovit produced the enterprise and directed the voice performances of Art Clokey, Dallas McKennon, Dick Beals, and Paul Frees.

Excellent! THANK YOU! II introduced these shorts from my childhood to my nephews and then on to THEIR kids!
The quality and attention to detail are superb. Both generations saw how demanding the work was, all being created MANUALLY (no CGI here, bringing a greater appreciation to the craft presented here).
Patiently awaiting your sequel. Thank you, again!

I've heard of this movie when I looking at images from 1995's "Gumby: The Movie", seeing the trailer here makes me interested in seeking out. This movie looks amazing.

I remembered seeing the film for the first time when I was at the Art Institute. It was a great showcase of some of Pal's best work in stop-motion animation. Not to mention, it was a surprise to find out that the grandfather of a good friend of mine was the voice of Gumby in the picture, Dallas McKennon.

For those who have asked "The Puppetoon Movie" Volume 2 - which Joe Dante and I filmed a chat about - will be posted on "Trailers from Hell" shortly. Volume 2 has been in the works with restorations for almost 2 years. Here is the funder page: www.scifistation.com/puppetoon2.html Your contributions will be greatly appreciated. So far the set is shaping up to be fantastic if not mind boggling! It include subjects not seen in over 80 years and some never seen before which includes European subjects thought lost. The Big News is Paramount Pictures has at last granted permission to restore and release some of the most famous Puppetoons. All coming from their original 35mm Imbibition (IB) Technicolor 3-Strip Successive Exposure Negatives (SEN) or original 35mm IB Technicolor nitrate prints. Check it out. Much gratitude for your consideration and support! ~ Arnold Leibovit

I have this and the Fantasy Film Worlds of George Pal on Blu-Ray. The first GP movie I ever saw as as kid was "Houdini" (probably a re-release) then as an 8 year old was "tom thumb", there after "The Time Machine" with our Aussie Rod, then "Atlantis", who could forget on the CINERAMA screen "THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF THE BROTHERS GRIMM" (where's the SmileBox version???!!) followed by my favourite "7 Faces of Dr Lao". Then the great "THE POWER" and "Doc Savage"....yes, and the earlier films. I can even watch The Naked Jungle and War of the Worlds in widescreen 1.78 without losing head shots of actors (both films were actually designed for the early widescreen if a cinema was set up for it). Have all these wonderful films on either DVD or Blu-Ray. A significant part of my childhood which you can't even explain to children of today. But there are those of you who know what I mean......

George Pal was one of the greatest animators and directors that ever lived. I would put him on par with Walt Disney and Max Fleischer. Pal made two of the most amazing adaptations of H.G. Wells’ work in “The War of the Worlds” and “The Time Machine.” The latter one is a special favorite of mine. These films hold up even in modern times, and his Puppetoon films are nothing to sneeze at, neither. “Tulips Shall Always Grow” and “Tubby the Tuba” are masterpieces of all time. I wish more of my generation (1990’s) were more familiar with his work. They could still learn a lot from him, both as an artist and a gentleman.
