I am now 29 and have been teaching for 3 years. I have a masters teaching languages. I can work as a teacher in my 30 but I think I’m going back to school and while I teach because I don’t see myself teaching when I’m older. Kids are mean lol, and now I can handle it but I don’t want to have to handle it forever.
I think another good job teaching job for teachers can be an event planner. Event planners have to be organized to planning things out, like a teacher would do with a lesson plan. I've been interested in wedding planning lately, which is why I brought this up.
I've been thinking about leaving the teaching field for a few years now; my main reason for quitting is stress and work-life balance. I'm just so stressed out, I don't feel respected and I'm tired of taking the work to my home. Even on vacation I'm thinking about what should I plan for the week after vacation, creating resources, grading, e-mails, toxic (gossip) co-workers... I'm done. I've been teaching Spanish since 2013, but I was a substitute teacher for 7 years before that. To be honest I've never liked teaching, it was just something that was available and I went for it. I've thought about quitting for years but I don't know what else I can do. This video helped shed some light, so thank you! I like the content creator idea.

In addition to exploring content creation you could also consider teaching private Spanish lessons to people online! There's a big demand for that and you certainly seen qualified! Have you considered that?

You subbed for 7 years before landing a teaching job? Sounds like me. Now I find it's not what I expected. All the usual reasons: no support, bad behavior, low pay, etc. The ones that are tenured or work in good schools tend to be there due to nepotism. Ridiculous.
@ok4spanish Interesting analogy to slavery. I think of the bureaucratic system (admin) with the Holocaust analogy. That is extreme, but it is amazing to me that oppression is so intense in the public school system (and I totally agree that we've gone backwards in our freedoms in this profession). I hear it is a different ball game in community college setting.
37 years as a Special Education Teacher. Love the teaching, love the kids, tired of the continuing increase of demand no related to teaching and the snow plow/helicopter/"not my kid" parents.
I stay for the insurance. As a long-term substitute, I found what I really loved to do, but unfortunately once you get a contract the whole picture changes. It's not about students any more; it's about data and looking good on paper. I'm so heartbroken about thinking I had found my niche only to go on to feel completely undervalued, under supported, and micromanaged, I don't know what to do with myself. I could make money teaching private lessons, but my family needs the health insurance.
This is such a common problem. I really don't like how health insurance is tied to a job, but in today's world it is. I'm not sure if you've looking into it, but we had a lot of luck with a health share "insurance" program. Here's a video I did on it. This is EXACTLY what I’m facing now. I’m so disappointed that being a teacher is really more about test scores and teaching to the test. Most days, the last thing I actually get to do is teach. Meetings everyday during planning period. It’s disheartening and I’m ready to go. This is my first year. Smh
I went backwards because part-time trainers get paid more than Paramedics in my area. Also, I live in the #1 fattest city in the U.S. and the local EMS companies did not have electric stretchers. Everyone down is clawing to get out, usually through nursing.

It is so stressful. August and the new year brings on a whole new stress. I'm about to exercise to release some stress and then log-on to my work portal. The parents who have major mental concerns and then their children act similar to them is the most challenging.

My co teachers were wonderful, but the director and administration was horrible. I thought I'd leave forever during covid shutdown, but I found a great new school with much much better pay and amazing benefits. I'm also a voice actor on the side. I'm working on children's books and I'll narrate my own.
Yes. Completely drained from the daily grind. I see friends and family in different professions and when their day ends, their day is done. Here I sit on a Sunday morning panicking about grading a 4 in stack of papers so I can then work on report cards. Ugh. It truly never ends.
I am a teacher turned high-end Nanny. It has been a great career for me! But it totally depends on the family I work for. Great family = great job! I have worked through a nanny agency for many years and she knows me well now so she can find me the family that fits. Plus temp nannying is a good gig too if that works with your lifestyle. I definitely recommend working through a good agency.

I have been in it since 2005 when I graduated. I got in the game late (40) and am now 58. All the testing and date synthesis I have to do is driving me crazy. I didn't go to school to be anything but a classroom teacher. The pay is low. In Idaho, we have to purchase many of our own materials because we have a huge population of refugees which means we have language barriers. It also means that parents do not understand why they have to shell out all this money and why we have to have so many levies to pay for essential services in the school. I'm too tired to keep doing this yet not old enough to retire.
Hey Brian! Yours is a familiar story. The teaching profession is certainly difficult and often unrewarded. You're certainly not too old to consider a new career or path! There's no job security like working for yourself! (And you don't have to answer to all that standardized testing you're prepping your kids for!) Have you ever thought about doing something else?
What countries are the refugees from and has the district tried hiring aides who speak the language? I really respect you for staying in the field. I got my credential at 37 but it has taken years to land a job. I was not expecting such a struggle.

It took me many years to finally leave my teaching career. I wanted to leave long ago. After getting very sick, I tried for 2 more years, and that did me in! I am working with career coaches and have not yet found my purpose, but I'm working hard to so, and I know I have one and will be happy doing what I love. I just don't know what that is yet! I’m a student who for the longest time want to go into teaching and recently changed my major to Family Studies and my track is in Child Life! I want to work with kids all day but I later realized that the classroom want not for me but I love the idea of working in a hospital! I think it’s a great option as a slight career change. You are still teaching in some ways but not necessarily academics.

Even though I’m told that I am a great teacher, I RARELY feel that way. For this reason, I am considering a change out of the classroom. I’m REALLY nervous about being older though. Because I work with younger fellow teachers, I feel like I do not remember or think through stuff to the extent like they do. It’s intimidating! It seems like people who move on feel like they are especially great.
I started teaching in 1983 and loved it, but the realities of this noble profession always compromised my autoimmune issues. Eventually, in 2014 I resigned and started working full time in the timber industry. I went from a high school classroom to the cab of a MADILL 1800 log loader and a Timberjack skidder. Now at 60+ years old I am feeling more energized at the end of a long day operating heavy equipment than I ever was at the end of my school day...which never seemed to end. Life has stress still, but it is something I can walk away from when I climb down and head home. By the way, my retirement check is $670.00 per month and I rolled over my IRA. The hardest part is taking a giant leap of faith into the unknown territory, but remember this is what we talk our students into doing when we ask them to try something new and it is uncomfortable. When we get out of our comfort zone is when we learn the most.
Jaye-Andrea Arp A facilitator helps a group of people in a business to reach an outcome or decision for which everyone will take responsibility and be fully committed. So basically creating a structure for others to follow in creating business decisions. A few people who have left teaching go and do that.
While I appreciate the ideas, none of these jobs can compete with the benefits I have as a teachers. Herein lies the problem. I have excellent health insurance and decent pay. The trick is to find a comparable career. I don't think any of these would fit that mold.
I was a teacher for 18 years teaching Resource Math and English and I’m sorry to say I am very glad I’m leaving the public school system. Very ugly experiences. So sad, but feeling optimistic now.

I love that you’re talking about online career/business alternatives because many of those can be started before teachers actually quit their jobs and figure out if it’s for them or not. I never thought I would like teaching, but after substituting for a bit, decided to consider it. I sent an email asking about the application process for a Masters in Teaching and was told they had a program they were starting within the next couple months that I could apply for right then. Didn't really have time to decide if it was a good idea before I was taking classes, and convinced I was going to be a teacher. Got my dream job immediately after I got my degree and have been teaching for two years. Great school, students are well behaved, and only have to teach my favorite subject. However, the grind is killing me and I have flip-flopped between thinking I was content and being boarderline suicidal. Really need to see a therapist but my undiagnosed ADHD, anxiety, and tendency to procrastinate on things I haven't done before make it hard to set up an appointment. I am starting my third year of teaching now (yes, I have never taught a year without covid) and I don't think this is for me. One the one hand, everyone is telling me I shouldn't quit yet as the students love me and are scoring well on the AP Exam. They gush about my class and tell all of their friends to take it! I always get things done by the end of the year and look successful from the outside. Also, other teachers say I don't have a good idea of what teaching is normally like as I have had 3 "first years" of teaching with all of the changes Covid brings. But I am unconvinced that things will really be that much better even if the schools get back to normal for the next few years. I got into it because I like teaching science not because I am really invested in the students or the school, so I feel no sense of pride or success when my kiddos score well. I feel like I am always on the verge of a mental break down from the stress. I did break a couple times last year where I drove to the mountains and put in a sick day the next day to gather myself. I feel like I don't have time for anything I love (HEMA, Art, Music, etc.) I will stick things out this year for the sake of my kiddos (I am teaching AP so they really need me) but am heavily considering not signing my contract when the time comes back around this spring. It is scary though as I am the only stable income. My husband has been trying for over a year to get a programming job but was only able to get something part time at FedEx. If I leave teaching, it will be hard to make ends meet and we will have no health insurance unless my husband or I can find another full-time job. Life f*ing sucks. I do have multiple talents and could probably be successful with a mix of CZcams educational videos, videos of me singing, and really pursuing selling my art, but that would depend on having a stable source of income to support starting all of that.
I am so sorry to hear your story. It certainly sounds like you're between a rock and a hard place for sure. And I'm sure it's true that teaching in COVID times is very unlike other times. Who knows when it will get better...? I did tutoring for years. No health care and could not support myself. It was then that I went back to the classroom. Now I am retired. In this country, teachers are underappreciated and underpaid. That says a lot about our society. I went from retired teacher to caregiver to my husband so my days are filled. I did learn a lot of nursing skills! My teacher organizational skills help in this respect.
I am glad I came upon this video and just subscribed. I cannot help but feel as though I have been drowning in the stress and anxiety of teaching lately and just put in an official letter of resignation last Monday. It's been too bad, and I NEED to do something else for the better of my sanity and my family. I am also young and married, 6 months pregnant, and a little nervous on how this is all going to play out but I had to do what was best for my mental health. I like a lot of these ideas and just now you reminded me of the possibility of going into my 401k if needed to make up for the time it takes to find a new job. I literally forgot that was an option. Cue the giant sigh of relief!!

I’m not even a parent but I’m 4 years in now and I’m burnt out. It’s taking a toll on my health too; I’m experiencing more and more flare ups of my arthritis and could barely walk today. I cried off and on at work! I didn’t let the kids see me do it but I’ve gotta get out of this career.

I’m a 4th year teacher in nyc single with no kids to support still struggling to make ends meet. I’m 31 years old I’m tired of having to work 2, 3 jobs just to support myself and not even be able to make a dent in my student loans. I feel like I’m at a complete dead end because as little as teacher salary is what other field can i go into with absolutely no experience other than teaching that will make more money. I regret choosing this career so much and i feel so stuck
I made the decision today that I need to retire after 32 years in the classroom. For years, I wrote my own curriculum with a outstanding results on test scores. Now, everything is scripted and all teachers are required to teach from the script. I’m a real teacher; I don’t play one on TV. I don’t need a script. Unfortunately, I started teaching at 21, so I haven’t met the full-benefits retirement age. My retirement will be around $450 less than I would get if I stayed another year and a half. Because I’m a long way from 65 and hubby has no retirement or insurance, it will cost about 1/3 of my check to pay insurance. I already tutor, but I don’t know where to begin locating any of these other opportunities.

I have been wanting to get for about 4 years now. I am really good at what I do (Reading Interventionist) but I don’t make any money (private school) and I love cross stitch and quilting. I have run a longarm business for almost 20 years on the side and have spent years teaching my customers how to quilt better. I have a YT channel for the cross stitch as well.

Amen to publications needing editors. That would be a great fit for me. I rarely read anything, especially Online, where there are no errors. Anyone who needs an editor, I will edit a few articles FREE and will show you your errors in exchange for a job. I’ve been thinking of leaving the classroom since the pandemic. I’m sure if anyone wants to know why teachers are leaving the profession, you can easily find out by typing your query into the CZcams search bar. You will find a multitude of teachers explaining their reasons and they are usually very similar to one another.
Obviously without going into too much detail here - I have been a teacher for nearly 6 years now and my plan is to move out of teaching after the end of next year. I have a Cert 3 in aged care, I've recently entered into an Honours course...and looking at the way it's all going, I can only say THANK **** I got other qualifications. To anybody out there who's feeling the burnout, who wakes up in the morning and just does not want to be there any more...it just has to be said; trust yourself. Play it smart, don't make unnecessary enemies, save your money...but you can do it. You can walk away from teaching :)
But not impossible! Just quit today and I feel a burden has been lifted and I’m excited about the future and future prospects. At this point…anything is better than what teachers endured last year due to covid, with online teaching
I just started thinking about leaving the teaching field last week after finishing my first year but going to wait it out I also have a 403b but I am going to wait it out until I make it to year 6 when I am fully vested. I have been thinking about transitioning out of the classroom for a couple of years now. I have always been very interested in supporting children/youth with mental health challenges. I would enjoy using my teaching experience and educational background to be a counsellor in a school or health care facility.

I teach French language in Morroco .To be honest, I enjoy teaching and helping students to be motivated to learn French ,even it seems difficult for them , but , I explained using gestures , acting in a funny way , so they can love the language . I started this year .well, there's stress, students may disrespect you , ....etc And I'm thinking if I can find teaching opportunities abroad .
I teach health education for my community with no teaching experience it’s amazing and we learn from our community just as much as we help spread education. All our clients are adults expect for select child development classes they during their kids 0-3yo

I love teaching and don't plan to leave it but always look to suggestions of other opportunities so IF that day comes I already have some idea what I'm doing.
The best advice I can give is for you to make a list of what you love doing, what you're good at, and what other people want/need. Wherever those lists overlap is a good place to start!
I've been considering quitting teaching English for like 5 months or so... I feel terible, because even though some days I love my kiddos, some others I hate the idea of lesson planning, the idea of teaching and I dread that I and my classes are not good enough. I don't know what I would like to do instead, or if I should just give it more time. Or change now before wasting any more time. Even when I was at Uni, I didn't like planning, I always got stuck for hours thinking on what to do. The shift is great, and my co workers are awesome, but taking work home everyday and always thinking about what's next without any breakes, it is draining me out. And I just started my career like one and a half years ago! :C
Thanks for your comment Danae! From your description, it sounds like teaching may not be a great fit for you. If I were you, I'd spend a bit of time really evaluating what types of things you do like (clearly not planning things... lol!) and then see what types of opportunities fit those skills. This will be my 25th year as an elementary teacher. I am eligible to retire but cannot afford to live on just my retirement. Either I get a job or stay in.
total teaching years 25, but only 21 years with public school...hold license for 7-12 social studies, 7-12 English, 7-12 general sciences, Health, and Principal 7-12....have been thinking of leaving since before the covid pandemic, but I work in Pennsylvania and am paid well, with good benefits and a super pension if I put in 30 years... which the pension will triple my payout in these last 9 years... so its financial suicide to leave... I'M TRAPPED!🤮 I love my kids to no end, love my main subject social studies, but like most teachers who want out, it's admin, school board, public policies and some parents that just ruin it all! Maybe I'll offer my editing services on the side for the next 9 years and see how that goes; it might be a great supplemental retirement income! thanks for the tip!👍😊
I’m in my second year, took this up as a midlife career change. I’m 42 now. I fear I may be falling into the statistic of leaving within the first 3 years. The sad part is that it’s one student that is driving me to look at leaving.

The Freedom Strategy TBH, I’ve been focusing on trying to get content for my kiddos and keep up with the grading. Think I’ve logged more hours in the last month than I have in the past two years. I seem to have had more success with the remote learning and implementing the flipped learning. Then again, I can mute the disruptions. For someone entering college wanting to become a teacher. What would be a good way for them to set themselves up while in college so that they could make an easier transition into another job if they decide to move on from teaching in the future?
I'm an AMI-certified Montessori guide. My first and only year in the classroom was one of the worst experiences of my life. I was idealistic about Montessori theory, but had no skills at all for classroom management, or for protecting myself against getting scapegoated by the administration. Never again.
I know a lot of people who earn way more and never had to return for further education. In general, they did this by starting their own businesses or contracting in the private sector.

I think another good job teaching job for teachers can be an event planner. Event planners have to be organized to planning things out, like a teacher would do with a lesson plan. I've been interested in wedding planning lately, which is why I brought this up.
I've been thinking about leaving the teaching field for a few years now; my main reason for quitting is stress and work-life balance. I'm just so stressed out, I don't feel respected and I'm tired of taking the work to my home. Even on vacation I'm thinking about what should I plan for the week after vacation, creating resources, grading, e-mails, toxic (gossip) co-workers... I'm done. I've been teaching Spanish since 2013, but I was a substitute teacher for 7 years before that. To be honest I've never liked teaching, it was just something that was available and I went for it. I've thought about quitting for years but I don't know what else I can do. This video helped shed some light, so thank you! I like the content creator idea.

In addition to exploring content creation you could also consider teaching private Spanish lessons to people online! There's a big demand for that and you certainly seen qualified! Have you considered that?

You subbed for 7 years before landing a teaching job? Sounds like me. Now I find it's not what I expected. All the usual reasons: no support, bad behavior, low pay, etc. The ones that are tenured or work in good schools tend to be there due to nepotism. Ridiculous.

That is extreme, but it is amazing to me that oppression is so intense in the public school system (and I totally agree that we've gone backwards in our freedoms in this profession). I stay for the insurance. As a long-term substitute, I found what I really loved to do, but unfortunately once you get a contract the whole picture changes. It's not about students any more; it's about data and looking good on paper. I'm so heartbroken about thinking I had found my niche only to go on to feel completely undervalued, under supported, and micromanaged, I don't know what to do with myself. I could make money teaching private lessons, but my family needs the health insurance.
This is such a common problem. I really don't like how health insurance is tied to a job, but in today's world it is. I'm not sure if you've looking into it, but we had a lot of luck with a health share "insurance" program. Here's a video I did on it. This is EXACTLY what I’m facing now. I’m so disappointed that being a teacher is really more about test scores and teaching to the test. Most days, the last thing I actually get to do is teach. I went backwards because part-time trainers get paid more than Paramedics in my area. Also, I live in the #1 fattest city in the U.S. and the local EMS companies did not have electric stretchers. Everyone down is clawing to get out, usually through nursing.

It is so stressful. August and the new year brings on a whole new stress. I'm about to exercise to release some stress and then log-on to my work portal. The parents who have major mental concerns and then their children act similar to them is the most challenging.
Voice actor! Teachers for young kids are the best at it. 👍🏻😊 I've been a preschool teacher for 23 years. I love it, but my last school(for 5 years) was horrible. My co teachers were wonderful, but the director and administration was horrible. I thought I'd leave forever during covid shutdown, but I found a great new school with much much better pay and amazing benefits. I'm also a voice actor on the side. I'm working on children's books and I'll narrate my own.

Yes. Completely drained from the daily grind. I see friends and family in different professions and when their day ends, their day is done. Here I sit on a Sunday morning panicking about grading a 4 in stack of papers so I can then work on report cards. Ugh. It truly never ends.
I am a teacher turned high-end Nanny. It has been a great career for me! But it totally depends on the family I work for. Great family = great job! I have worked through a nanny agency for many years and she knows me well now so she can find me the family that fits. Plus temp nannying is a good gig too if that works with your lifestyle. I definitely recommend working through a good agency.

I have been in it since 2005 when I graduated. I got in the game late (40) and am now 58. All the testing and date synthesis I have to do is driving me crazy. I didn't go to school to be anything but a classroom teacher. The pay is low. In Idaho, we have to purchase many of our own materials because we have a huge population of refugees which means we have language barriers. It also means that parents do not understand why they have to shell out all this money and why we have to have so many levies to pay for essential services in the school. I'm too tired to keep doing this yet not old enough to retire.
Hey Brian! Yours is a familiar story. The teaching profession is certainly difficult and often unrewarded. You're certainly not too old to consider a new career or path! There's no job security like working for yourself! (And you don't have to answer to all that standardized testing you're prepping your kids for!) Have you ever thought about doing something else?
What countries are the refugees from and has the district tried hiring aides who speak the language? I really respect you for staying in the field. I got my credential at 37 but it has taken years to land a job. I was not expecting such a struggle.

It took me many years to finally leave my teaching career. I wanted to leave long ago. After getting very sick, I tried for 2 more years, and that did me in! I am working with career coaches and have not yet found my purpose, but I'm working hard to so, and I know I have one and will be happy doing what I love. I just don't know what that is yet! I’m a student who for the longest time want to go into teaching and recently changed my major to Family Studies and my track is in Child Life! I want to work with kids all day but I later realized that the classroom want not for me but I love the idea of working in a hospital! I think it’s a great option as a slight career change. You are still teaching in some ways but not necessarily academics.

I also think it's a great idea to set up your own website on Google My Business. Quite easy to set up and it's free, with the option to pay for greater exposure around your locality. Just this year, I decided I am through. It is the year that broke me.
Even though I’m told that I am a great teacher, I RARELY feel that way. For this reason, I am considering a change out of the classroom. I’m REALLY nervous about being older though. Because I work with younger fellow teachers, I feel like I do not remember or think through stuff to the extent like they do. It’s intimidating! It seems like people who move on feel like they are especially great.
I started teaching in 1983 and loved it, but the realities of this noble profession always compromised my autoimmune issues. Eventually, in 2014 I resigned and started working full time in the timber industry. I went from a high school classroom to the cab of a MADILL 1800 log loader and a Timberjack skidder. Now at 60+ years old I am feeling more energized at the end of a long day operating heavy equipment than I ever was at the end of my school day...which never seemed to end. Life has stress still, but it is something I can walk away from when I climb down and head home. By the way, my retirement check is $670.00 per month and I rolled over my IRA. The hardest part is taking a giant leap of faith into the unknown territory, but remember this is what we talk our students into doing when we ask them to try something new and it is uncomfortable. When we get out of our comfort zone is when we learn the most.

While I appreciate the ideas, none of these jobs can compete with the benefits I have as a teachers. Herein lies the problem. I have excellent health insurance and decent pay. The trick is to find a comparable career. I don't think any of these would fit that mold.
I was a teacher for 18 years teaching Resource Math and English and I’m sorry to say I am very glad I’m leaving the public school system. Very ugly experiences. So sad, but feeling optimistic now.

I never thought I would like teaching, but after substituting for a bit, decided to consider it. I sent an email asking about the application process for a Masters in Teaching and was told they had a program they were starting within the next couple months that I could apply for right then. Didn't really have time to decide if it was a good idea before I was taking classes, and convinced I was going to be a teacher. Got my dream job immediately after I got my degree and have been teaching for two years. Great school, students are well behaved, and only have to teach my favorite subject. However, the grind is killing me and I have flip-flopped between thinking I was content and being boarderline suicidal. Really need to see a therapist but my undiagnosed ADHD, anxiety, and tendency to procrastinate on things I haven't done before make it hard to set up an appointment. I am starting my third year of teaching now (yes, I have never taught a year without covid) and I don't think this is for me. One the one hand, everyone is telling me I shouldn't quit yet as the students love me and are scoring well on the AP Exam. They gush about my class and tell all of their friends to take it! I always get things done by the end of the year and look successful from the outside. Also, other teachers say I don't have a good idea of what teaching is normally like as I have had 3 "first years" of teaching with all of the changes Covid brings. But I am unconvinced that things will really be that much better even if the schools get back to normal for the next few years. I got into it because I like teaching science not because I am really invested in the students or the school, so I feel no sense of pride or success when my kiddos score well. I feel like I am always on the verge of a mental break down from the stress. I did break a couple times last year where I drove to the mountains and put in a sick day the next day to gather myself. I feel like I don't have time for anything I love (HEMA, Art, Music, etc.) I will stick things out this year for the sake of my kiddos (I am teaching AP so they really need me) but am heavily considering not signing my contract when the time comes back around this spring. It is scary though as I am the only stable income. My husband has been trying for over a year to get a programming job but was only able to get something part time at FedEx. If I leave teaching, it will be hard to make ends meet and we will have no health insurance unless my husband or I can find another full-time job. Life f*ing sucks. I do have multiple talents and could probably be successful with a mix of CZcams educational videos, videos of me singing, and really pursuing selling my art, but that would depend on having a stable source of income to support starting all of that.
I am so sorry to hear your story. It certainly sounds like you're between a rock and a hard place for sure. And I'm sure it's true that teaching in COVID times is very unlike other times. Who knows when it will get better...? I did tutoring for years. No health care and could not support myself. It was then that I went back to the classroom. Now I am retired. In this country, teachers are underappreciated and underpaid. That says a lot about our society. I went from retired teacher to caregiver to my husband so my days are filled. I did learn a lot of nursing skills! My teacher organizational skills help in this respect.
I am glad I came upon this video and just subscribed. I cannot help but feel as though I have been drowning in the stress and anxiety of teaching lately and just put in an official letter of resignation last Monday. It's been too bad, and I NEED to do something else for the better of my sanity and my family. I am also young and married, 6 months pregnant, and a little nervous on how this is all going to play out but I had to do what was best for my mental health. I like a lot of these ideas and just now you reminded me of the possibility of going into my 401k if needed to make up for the time it takes to find a new job. I literally forgot that was an option. Cue the giant sigh of relief!!

I’m not even a parent but I’m 4 years in now and I’m burnt out. It’s taking a toll on my health too; I’m experiencing more and more flare ups of my arthritis and could barely walk today. I cried off and on at work! I didn’t let the kids see me do it but I’ve gotta get out of this career.

I made the decision today that I need to retire after 32 years in the classroom. For years, I wrote my own curriculum with a outstanding results on test scores. Now, everything is scripted and all teachers are required to teach from the script. I’m a real teacher; I don’t play one on TV. I don’t need a script. Unfortunately, I started teaching at 21, so I haven’t met the full-benefits retirement age. My retirement will be around $450 less than I would get if I stayed another year and a half. Because I’m a long way from 65 and hubby has no retirement or insurance, it will cost about 1/3 of my check to pay insurance. I already tutor, but I don’t know where to begin locating any of these other opportunities.

I have been wanting to get for about 4 years now. I am really good at what I do (Reading Interventionist) but I don’t make any money (private school) and I love cross stitch and quilting. I have run a longarm business for almost 20 years on the side and have spent years teaching my customers how to quilt better. I have a YT channel for the cross stitch as well.

Amen to publications needing editors. That would be a great fit for me. I rarely read anything, especially Online, where there are no errors. Anyone who needs an editor, I will edit a few articles FREE and will show you your errors in exchange for a job.
I’ve been thinking of leaving the classroom since the pandemic. I’m sure if anyone wants to know why teachers are leaving the profession, you can easily find out by typing your query into the CZcams search bar. You will find a multitude of teachers explaining their reasons and they are usually very similar to one another.
Obviously without going into too much detail here - I have been a teacher for nearly 6 years now and my plan is to move out of teaching after the end of next year. I have a Cert 3 in aged care, I've recently entered into an Honours course...and looking at the way it's all going, I can only say THANK **** I got other qualifications.
To anybody out there who's feeling the burnout, who wakes up in the morning and just does not want to be there any more...it just has to be said; trust yourself. Play it smart, don't make unnecessary enemies, save your money...but you can do it. You can walk away from teaching :)
If you’re young and in your first few years GET OUT NOW! When you have kids, mortgage, etc and get 20 years in it will be too difficult to leave.

I teach French language in Morroco .To be honest, I enjoy teaching and helping students to be motivated to learn French ,even it seems difficult for them , but , I explained using gestures , acting in a funny way , so they can love the language .

The best advice I can give is for you to make a list of what you love doing, what you're good at, and what other people want/need. Wherever those lists overlap is a good place to start!

I've been considering quitting teaching English for like 5 months or so... I feel terible, because even though some days I love my kiddos, some others I hate the idea of lesson planning, the idea of teaching and I dread that I and my classes are not good enough. I don't know what I would like to do instead, or if I should just give it more time. Or change now before wasting any more time. Even when I was at Uni, I didn't like planning, I always got stuck for hours thinking on what to do. The shift is great, and my co workers are awesome, but taking work home everyday and always thinking about what's next without any breakes, it is draining me out. And I just started my career like one and a half years ago! :C
Thanks for your comment Danae! From your description, it sounds like teaching may not be a great fit for you. If I were you, I'd spend a bit of time really evaluating what types of things you do like (clearly not planning things... lol!) and then see what types of opportunities fit those skills. But probably wait to quit until you are on the path to something else. Thanks again for watching and for the comment!

This will be my 25th year as an elementary teacher. I am eligible to retire but cannot afford to live on just my retirement. Either I get a job or stay in.

18.5 years....UK..Brunei....Indonesia...China over it now
total teaching years 25, but only 21 years with public school...hold license for 7-12 social studies, 7-12 English, 7-12 general sciences, Health, and Principal 7-12....have been thinking of leaving since before the covid pandemic, but I work in Pennsylvania and am paid well, with good benefits and a super pension if I put in 30 years... which the pension will triple my payout in these last 9 years... so its financial suicide to leave... I'M TRAPPED!🤮 I love my kids to no end, love my main subject social studies, but like most teachers who want out, it's admin, school board, public policies and some parents that just ruin it all!
Maybe I'll offer my editing services on the side for the next 9 years and see how that goes; it might be a great supplemental retirement income! thanks for the tip!👍😊

I’m in my second year, took this up as a midlife career change. I’m 42 now. I fear I may be falling into the statistic of leaving within the first 3 years. The sad part is that it’s one student that is driving me to look at leaving.

The Freedom Strategy TBH, I’ve been focusing on trying to get content for my kiddos and keep up with the grading. Think I’ve logged more hours in the last month than I have in the past two years. I seem to have had more success with the remote learning and implementing the flipped learning. Then again, I can mute the disruptions.

I work at childcare center as an assistant but takes a lot of work am still working towards my AA but still don’t know if this is the direction I want it is very tiring
Yes, working with kids can be very tiring. I suggest you talk to others in the same field to see if they recommend it.

For someone entering college wanting to become a teacher. What would be a good way for them to set themselves up while in college so that they could make an easier transition into another job if they decide to move on from teaching in the future?

I am going to train for a Montessori license
So i can work at a good school and get tuition discount for my twins
I love Montessori! (Probably because I went there when I was a little kid!)
I'm an AMI-certified Montessori guide. My first and only year in the classroom was one of the worst experiences of my life. I was idealistic about Montessori theory, but had no skills at all for classroom management, or for protecting myself against getting scapegoated by the administration. Never again.
To earn the same or more, evenually you`ll return to school or training Not many have funds to return to school.
I know a lot of people who earn way more and never had to return for further education. In general, they did this by starting their own businesses or contracting in the private sector.
